1x2 'staggered' mount calacatta gold marble?

I've called several places and have yet to find the 1x2's in a staggered mount, but have found many stores that have it in the stacked mount. It's an absolute longshot, but does anyone know where I can locate the staggered mount 1x2's in calacatta gold honed marble?

Also, on the subject of Calacatta Gold - is all CG created equal? I'm asking because I'm also purchasing honed 12x12's and I've gotten estimates that range from $12 to $25 per sq foot, so I'm wondering if there's a difference in quality depending upon where I buy it and at what price point.

Nancy-- have you tried Artistic Tile? That is where I bought my 4"x16" calacatta gold tile, and I think they carry a wide variety of sizes. The quality of their stone is excellent and they have some *gorgeous* calacatta chair rail pieces, but it's not cheap.

Regarding the variation in price-- when i was shopping around, it seemed like there were so many name variations of Calacatta with different prices-- Gold, Oro, Extra, Calacatta Carrera. The more expensive stuff tended to have stronger veining and more rich brown than gray/black. I looked at several different lots of the same tile from the same quarry, and there was a vast variety of colors. I happened to like one that was more white than cream background color and had a variety of both brown and gray/black veining. I think my tile ended up at $17/psf. But I love it! I am just finishing up my bathroom that is calacatta gold tiles (4"x16" in a running bond pattern) with an accent strip of lavender/blue/gray glass tiles (1"x2"). We are about 90% of the way done, so check back in a few weeks and I should have some pictures. It's not grouted yet, but so far I really like the combo.

Calcutta gold mosaic (3/8") was my first choice for our bathroom floor. When I saw it at the tile store, it was mounted and grouted and I swear there is no prettier stone in the world. They didn't call it calcutta but crema fantasy. When the salesperson ordered it she mistakenly ordered crema marfil - which IMO is not even in the same league as calcutta. It turned out that this particular manufacturer discont'd the calcutta and the only other place I could find it wanted over $30 /sqft. I just couldn't justify the cost. What does this have to do with you? Well, it's just my round about way of saying - Yes, yes, yes, go for the calcutta mosaic floor! I would just love to see it installed. Now having said that, keep in mind that it won't be as carefree as a ceramic floor. When I was staining our door and the mahogany stain seeped through the drop cloth and onto the new tile, I was pretty happy we had gone for the ceramic hexes. No matter what you go for, please post pix. It sounds like your bath will be wonderful.

Jacqueline5, thanks for posting the color. I thought it might be Revere Pewter. I was going to RP with my bathroom but thought it might read too dark, in my low light. So I was going to use it in a sitting room, but decided against it and used something else. I actually have a gallon on hand. I dislike the color I ended up using. I am thinking of using the gallon of RP I have to paint up a sample board, and see how it looks in there. The sitting room has a fair amount of west light. I don't know what's going on, but I keep seeing pink in my colors and I was afraid that the Revere Pewter would have a pink cast too. I'm glad to hear you say that it is olive. I love green and blues. Your counter is beautifully installed. Is it 2cm? It looks like it is at the sink. If it is they did a terrific outer edge. The edge must have been mitered, right? I see the section of the stone from where the counter was taken. I love it.

Hey, barncatz: Every word of consolation and support helps. I'm trying not to rush the BS decision, but I know I'll feel much better about the countertop experience once I'm not staring at these sliver add-ons. One of my very early inspirations was Majra's kitchen. She, just like pipdog, used the mosaics for a lovely effect. And this is why I spent so much time last year looking at mosaics. But the mosaics seem a bit too busy (for me) up close. The rest of my kitchen is a work in progress. Lotsa 9-1/2' walls that will need to be painted again (probably a cool white -- the next challenge!), and a ton of natural light coming in. Baseboards, pantry door and trim are all semi-gloss white, and ceiling is white. Kitchen is open to the family room: taupe walls with a white fireplace/mantel -- white trim throughout the entire house. pippiep: Matching grout it is, then! One decision down. :) I've marked out the areas that will require BS tile. As you can see, it's not very expansive, and each one not very large. So, I need to find the correct scale/dimension tile that will look right in these spaces. I think using larger (3x6) tiles in a herringbone pattern will leave me with a bunch of chopped up squares in the bartop and cutout window areas. At least with the newest elongated hex pattern, most of the hexes will be retained.

Thank you so much to both of you for your responses. Karin, your bathroom is truly gorgeous! And I can't believe it's DIY...I'm using pro's and if mine comes out even half as good as yours, I'll consider it a success.

I called Artistic Tile this morning and they found two vendors with staggered 1x2's for me, one is at $46 sq ft, the other at $66 sq ft...yikes! They're still looking to see if they can find something less expensive. In the meantime I talked to my tile guy and he said he can cut the stacked 1x2's into strips and manually stagger them, so with the stacked tile at $14.75 sq ft that option is looking very attractive. I'm going to wait to hear back from Artistic, but if they don't find something less expensive then I'll go with the stacked tile option.

Hi does anyone know of a source to buy calacutta gold chair rails and pencil moldings at not such an outlandish price? Builders depot is going to start carrying it apparently in a few months but i need it now..thanks!
