Neolith Calacatta slab
Comments (119)Has anyone from this post installed Neolith slab countertops in the north NJ area? I recently reached out to the local Neolith distributor in my area, HG Stones, to get a quote on replacing our current granite countertops (35 sq. ft) and backsplash (32 sq. ft). HG Stones referred to me to one of their local partners to coordinate an estimate/fabrication/install. For 12mm polished Estatuario countertop with mitered edge and 6mm backsplash I was quoted just over $11k for the job; does this seem about right to you (~$167 / sq ft, installed)? Also, can I be confident that the partner they referred me to is skilled in Neolith fabrication/installation or should I go back and try to work with HG Stones, the local Neolith distributor in my area (per Neotlith's website), directly? My last question: Neolith appears to have a 20mm thickness slab product out now. Has anyone see or had this thickness installed? How's it hold up/compare to the 12mm version?...See MoreSolid Core Doors BMC vs. Home Depot?
Comments (10)If the part numbers are the same the doors are the same. There will be no difference in materials, thickness, jambs, etc. I would love to see the three minute reaction of an accountant who just learned that his company had two different inventory values for two different items that had the exact same part number! I say three minutes because that is exactly how long it would take for him to quit. I mean that is a one way trip to financial statement fraud and a nice orange jumpsuit! Big box stores get things cheaper because of economies of scale. Call your local pizza delivery shop and ask them how much 2 large pepperoni pizzas cost. Then call them back and ask how much 200 large pepperoni pizzas cost. You will notice the prices are not the same per pizza. We can get into the reason for this if you really want, but the fact remains that Home Depot gets a better price than a smaller retailer will. On top of this, they have lower overhead... Home Depot's fixed asset turnover ratio is 4.32! Smaller lumber supply stores are not getting close to that. In the end, things cost them less, and a smaller percentage of every dollar collected has to go to keeping the lights on, so you get cheaper prices... -------------- Even the idea that big box stores will get an alternate product number made of cheaper parts is suspect. The additional materials handling costs of stocking cheaper materials just for big box stores would eat up any savings. Then you get into carrying costs and changeover costs. How much time do you think you would spend stopping making one faucet, get all those materials off the production lines with forklifts, take them to their respective place in the materials warehouse, find the "cheaper materials," truck those over to the line and load it? You really think that is going to save you money? Then after you saved money by using cheaper materials you get into the materials efficiency variance that should polish off any savings you got from using cheaper materials. Usually when different materials are used on similar product it is because they are being sold to different countries....See Morewhat is Home Depot good for?
Comments (36)There are several reasons home improvement stores are popular. Convenience. Everything is in a relatively small area, easy to see/touch/inspect. A customer can often go in, get what they want and be done in much less time than in a lumber yard. DIY friendly. Most lumber yards do not have classes on different skills. Most lumberyards do not let a customer pick and choose material. Material selection. Most lumber yards do not stock plants/garden supplies, lighting, carpet, appliances, oil, antifreeze, weed killer, or lawn mowers. Locally, there are obvious differences between Lowe's and Home Depot. Menards is new and Sutherlands, along with a couple other brands, are gone. As a remodeler, I used about 7 different Home Depot locations. Only had 3 Lowe's. HD has basic building supplies. I seldom had to order material. Not so at Lowe's. Most trips, I could not find all the things I needed for a job. HD either trained their folks better or hired more knowledgeable folks. I am aware that is a very bold statement, but here in the greater Kansas City Metro, I found it to be fact. I did a fair amount of low/no cost to the homeowner work. Organizations donated money/supplies or I solicited donations/supplies. Never got any cooperation from Lowe's managers. Very few discounts and no material donations. I worked on one house where a local HD manager donated two truck loads of supplies(completely filled my two car garage) and had his driver deliver and unload/position the entire amount. Lumber/insulation/sheet rock/plywood/plumbing fixtures/flooring. All free. All I did was ask. I did a job where the HO wanted the materials to come from Lowe's(I usually had the HO provide materials). Fairly simply deck repair/addition. Went to two different Lowe's stores(with the HO along) and could not get all I needed. She finally asked where else we could go. I took her to the closest HD---Bingo, they had everything. She was impressed. Do I shop at Lowe's? Once in a great while, but I still see no changes in policy or material availability....See MoreFlooring Transition: going from real wood to wood like porcelain tile?
Comments (29)Well the kitchen is almost done. The floor is my favourite thing! Absolutely love them! It is porcelain wood plank layed herringbone butting up against the hardwood floor. The hardwood and porcelain floors do not look the same but they do have the same tone. I think they look great together. It was hard to get a good pic because the lighting is different in the kitchen vs the hall....See MoreRelated Professionals
