I can help with downloads I need to know what browser, if it is firefox then click Tools then options in the tabs above click main look under (downloads) you can change where they go you may want to have them go to desk top for now. Right now the downloads may be going to "Downloads" in you Your "My Documents folder take a look in there for a Download folder or something like that.

Zep, thank you for your response. I have tried to have the downloads to the desktop, a box opens when I choose save, the list of files in my computer comes up , I try to pick desktop by highlighting, cannot get back to the download box to fill in desktop or change what is there because I have to click save. When I click save which is really the only option that is useful, I cannot go back to the download box, it shows it's downloading, to whatever was there before. I've looked through all the files, downloads, searched by name, even tried to make a new folder just for this but cannot type this folder name into the option in the download box. I'm using IE, Windows XP home.

About the some errors on page, I've been hesitant to upgrade java and it sounds like this may be part of the problem from the link you gave me.

All you need to do there is click Browse then in the list that shows left click on desktop to hilight it then at the bottom click ok...

The browse option is not there, but on the address bar the down arrow brings up all the files and subfiles. I highlight desktop, click save, OK not available and it goes ahead and saves it to another file name, my name, desktop, downloads, something like that, but not there. Download folder is empty, desktop has old download but no recent ones. This must have something to do with some of the last windows updates I made this last week. I'll have to start unupdating those to see what happens. This all takes time, which I am really running short of. I appreciate your efforts to help me.

If the browse button is not there then something is wrong these things just don't go away, I would consider reinstalling firefox when you get time from the link provided..

UUMMmm, I'm using internet explorer, not familiar with firefox. Not confident I can download anything at this time.

Instead of highlighting your desktop and hoping to "save to", try double-clicking the desktop listing to actually open that directory. It should change the list to whatever is on your desktop. Then hit save.

In IE8, and I think it is the same in all versions, your first choice is to "Run" or "Save". Choose "Save" and then another box Save As will open. There you can choose wherever you want to save the download. I made a separate folder for downloads in My Computer/C:// and save all downloads to that folder. If it is a download I know I won't be keeping, I save to desktop. But there are two diaglogue boxes, not one, in the saving process.

I managed to click enough to save to the my downloads and it did change the name to Download and downloaded to that name but it wasn't there or anywhere else. I've done this before and it's being diverted somewhere else. The second choice under Desktop was http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69157 which I had not seen before. And, it is in that second dialogue box is where I click on the location I want to save to so it changes in the first box. I'll keep trying. I have a wild feeling there is something amiss with IE7 but my guesses are not all that reliable. I have not upgraded to 8 but am reluctant to when I'm having these problems. Someone suggested reinstalling IE, not sure how to go about it especially with this download problem.

Thank you everyone. I gave up on the scanner as the HP site started sending me all kinds of updates. I managed to create all the docs I needed in Word. I'll turn this over to someone who can figure out what's wrong with my PC.
