Generic Host Process

Hi,

I get the following message when I turn on my computer.

" Generic Host Process for Win 32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close......."

This occurred after I did a scan which found a Trojan that I quarantined and supposedly removed.

Can anyone suggest how I remedy this .....?

Are there any other details in the error report? Are you still getting it and when do you get it..what are you doing when you get the error?

I would also run a malwarebytes scan.

you removed it from quarantine and fully deleted it?
if so you may have deleted parts of needed files etc. It is always a good idea to leave in the vault to make sure it is not part of a needed system file.
You can try to do a system restore to prior to that time period and see if it goes back to normal, if so then do the malware scan again and leave it in the quarantine if it is found, it could have been a false positive and you actually removed a needed system file.

Highalttransplant, I always just coded linked thumbnails by hand because I didn't know Photobucket had a tool that generates the code, and I don't have much trouble doing it. It turns out Photobucket can generate the html for you: Follow this link to this Photobucket Tutorial, What you want to do for a clickable thumbnail is #5, HTML clickable thumbnails for eBay, LiveJournal, MySpace, etc. Most folks just post their full sized pics. I got in the habit of posting thumbnails because a thread full of large pics can be really huge, and if there's a whole lot of responses with full sized pics, it could be painful for those on dial up. I got the download from CNET, which I believe is trustworthy. I went and took a better look at some of the explanations for ZA (had a bit of trouble getting at them) and realized that I had been unfair in some of what I wrote. ZA has switched the Program control functions in the left and right-hand panels, and I got confused. The new version either decides for you whether a site is trustworthy, or asks you for permission when it wants to act as server.That is handled by "Smart Defense" in the left-hand panel, sometimes automatically and sometimes asking the user for permission when a program wants to act as server. The right-hand panel NOW (which used to be for server permissions) seems to be taking care of what used to be in the left panel, that is, simply to grant or refuse Access, under the headings "Trusted" and "Internet." I still don't know why there are these two items to be checked, but figure I can give green checkmarks to anything that I had checked in the left panel of the old ZA. Sorry this is so complicated; just wanted to set things straight. In the cases where I complained that ZA had presumptuously changed my settings to green checkmarks, the items were probably things that ZA handles automatically. Things are noted as "auto" or "custom."

"I'm sick and tired of this and I'm not going to take it anymore!" Sorry for lack of detail. I'm going off the deep end and now at the point that I sometimes don't read what MalwareBytes has found - I just get rid of them. Rogue this, trojan that, yeah,yeah, yeah....frankly I'm so sick of all this b.s. Four computer users in the house and I'm the one that has to figure out this "shtuff" all the time instead of being productive myself. Now, back to our featured story: I also just installed a wireless repeater last night. I am wondering if some kind of router setting got changed. I have since deleted the printer from the router table and let it find it again, still no luck. Everybody can see the printer, sitting "idle" but nobody can print to the damned thing. (BTW, HP all in one desk-jet printers are a pita, no matter what the reviews say. Using them as scanners is another test of one's mental balance.) I might use this episode as an excuse to upgrade the XP computer, but I'd hate to find out the problem is elsewhere on the network.

Your question is really very vague, but I guess you are asking what a host does for you. Its simple, they offer space on their servers to store and display graphics and or websites. Most charge for the service by the month depending on the amount of service you require, but there are still a few out there that are free. Each have their own set of rules as far as the amount of data you can store, how much bandwidth you can use and if linking outside their server is allowed. There are different types of host from "full service" to just photo and graphic storage. Full service are general the ones that charge where you can host your websites and might include a domain name, email and other services. Photo and graphic hosts do just that, let you store your stuff on their servers for viewing on the internet, but not all allow linking to places like here on the Garden Web. If you are looking for a free service you need to google, but besure to read each ones TOS (Terms of Service) before signing up. You also might check with your ISP as most of them offer free storage. There again besure to read the TOS!

do you by any chance have McAfee on your pc? if so there is a major problem happening with one of their updates that identifies system files as trojans and many people are finding their pc not booting.

The version of McAfee which is having the problem is a really old one so if you have kept your programs updated there should not be a problem. The affected version is VSE8.0i with Engine 5100.

Hi,
I don't have McAfee on my computer ( at least I don't think so. ....have XP on an old Compaq Presario with AVG, spywareblaster , super Antispyware and run them when called for). A notice came on the other night that I had a trojan , so I immediately ran a scan and it was quarantined and removed. Since then, every time I turn the computer on, the notice comes up. Other than that, I see no changes. Can someone please refresh my memory about doing a system restore?

Hi,
I tried to do a system restore to two different restore points; both would not go through.....said cannot do a restore to this date, after going through the process of trying, shutting down, etc...this scares me.
Any other thoughts ?

there are some malware that we have seen cause restore points not to restore. You may want to go over to LzD forum and link to this thread and see if they will help you with some logs and see what can be found.

Maybe try doing a System File Checker from a cmd window.
SFC /?

do the one from the boot if xp think its sfc /scanonce
or in windows, both xp and vista its

Hi,
I went to my SuperAntispyware folder and clicked on the quarantined items section. Under the date all this happened, the superantispyware quarantined a "TrojanDropper/Win-NV and under that is:
HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\current Version\Run(sysldtray-c:\windows\ld12.exe

There is a link to restore the files to the computer which I pressed, but I still have the same notice popping up when I start up.

ld12.exe seems to be harmful file from what I see on a search.

Guessing its still starting and keys or components have been removed so the start up process is incomplete & giving that error ... I'm suprised you dont see something in Event Viewer .

Dont have XP here to refresh my memory but maybe similar, in Vista's Management console you could look at Reliability and Performance / Reliability Monitor. And maybe see what is failing.

If you are familiar with regedit maybe search that file then look in the Run keys to see if you can recognise what process or program maybe is firing up that actually used that file - to give you something to work on.

ld12.exe: See below.

Worm:Win32/Koobface.I is a worm that spreads via Facebook, Friendster, and other social networking Web sites.

Not sure what approach is taken to remove it,

Raven has already suggested posting at another forum in the hijackthis area you would be best to follow that advice..
