virus, then no printing

I got hit by something that wiped out my internet connection (cleared the IP settings), and also screwed up my printing for the home network. The internet is now resolved, but the printing is not. I can add jobs to the print queue, but can't print them. I have restarted the printer, unplugged, etc, but no luck. All the time "access denied" on the print properties to try to do anything, and this box does have admin priv's. I removed/reinstalled the drivers, still can't access. Any ideas?

BTW, for weeks I have been getting the following error:

"Generic Host Process for Win32 services has stopped, etc."

This is on an XP computer w/ SP2, P3 chip, 2Gb Ram, etc.

Thanks for any feedback, clues, etc.

Generic Host Process for Win32 services has stopped.

That can be related to virus, malware problem.

If you're running Windows 98, your computer could be ancient from a technical standpoint. It would be interesting to know its age and see the specs (RAM, processor speed, and hard drive size). However, I suspect that, if the machine is as old as I think, it may be time for a new computer that can keep up with all the resource intensive demands of today's software. I'm not saying that you couldn't make this work, but you are at the point where you will continue to have more and more problems, and not have any tech support to fall back on. Many web sites have complex graphics and other features that will tax an older machine. It's like trying to fly cross-country with a rubber-band powered airplane.

My son and 2 grandsons just had this! They had foot, hand and mouth disease, a strain of the coxsackie disease. My youngest grandson ended up hospitalized with it due to dehydration. This strain is typically suffered during childhood. The dr was surprised that 34 yo son had not been exposed before. Typically, you get a fever, and an itchy rash on hands, feet and in your mouth. All 3 are now losing their toe nails from this. They were pretty sick for about a week. Dd is pregnant and and since she was around her brother's family, her OB checked her and it showed in a blood test that she had been exposed recently. The OB checked with an infectious disease specialist and he said it won't be a problem with the baby because she is far enough along. ( It would be different if she had delivered with it.) I am glad you are checking in with your dr. He should be able to answer all your questions and good luck and Godspeed!

This is a true threat but is easily identified. Executable attachments (ending in ".exe") should never be opened from an unknown source without at least scanning it. This shows the danger of using one email address too. Whenever I use a throwaway address and get an email that says there's a problem with my account, I laugh. Vendors do not contact people this way. People really need to educate themselves to the basic dangers. Lately there's been a big downturn in the number of viruses out there because people did get affected enough to start using antivirus programs. Then it turned more to "malware" including spyware and the like. Now however, people have become complacent and forget about the importance of securing a computer. All too many get a new computer and rather than doing the correct thing, that is to secure it, they immediately go online to try it out and tell everyone about the new machine. And they get infected. Now that there's a numbness to the true threat of viruses, people not having, using and/or updating antivirus, firewalls, etc, we can probably expect more to come but at the same time, there'll likely be the hoax problem too, which can be just as bad, if not worse. Think of it this way: When you open email, and for that matter surfing the net to a point, you're having sex with everyone on the internet. Are you going to use protection? You should have a good firewall. Windows is not a good firewall. You should have an antivirus program and update it regularly. You should have an antispyware program and perhaps more than one. It's a good idea to avoid using Internet Explorer as your browser, but if you do you should at least secure it as best you can. Also keep in mind that when you receive emails that are suspicious, it's not difficult to do some checking. Look at the attachments before you open them and never let your computer open them automatically. One of the most dangerous phrases out there is "send this to everyone you know" because people feel a need to do this. I get a little worked up about this because for some reason people feel compelled to do whatever an email says to do. Accordingly, they normally send far more hoaxes than they do factual information. And 2 minutes of basic research would usually show the difference. Operating a computer is much like operating a car. With the right comes responsibility and if you don't show the responsibility you can easily lose your rights. You owe it to yourself, but more importantly, you owe it to others to use the vehicle responsibly, whether the vehicle is a car or computer. People wouldn't be writing the viruses, spyware, etc, if they weren't effective. Taking simple precautions will render them much less effective. Don't be afraid of computers or the internet but be informed enough to protect yourself. Not trying to come off as a lecture, just a precaution. Here's wishing you happy and safe computing.

"I'm sick and tired of this and I'm not going to take it anymore!"

Sorry for lack of detail. I'm going off the deep end and now at the point that I sometimes don't read what MalwareBytes has found - I just get rid of them. Rogue this, trojan that, yeah,yeah, yeah....frankly I'm so sick of all this b.s. Four computer users in the house and I'm the one that has to figure out this "shtuff" all the time instead of being productive myself.

Now, back to our featured story: I also just installed a wireless repeater last night. I am wondering if some kind of router setting got changed. I have since deleted the printer from the router table and let it find it again, still no luck. Everybody can see the printer, sitting "idle" but nobody can print to the damned thing. (BTW, HP all in one desk-jet printers are a pita, no matter what the reviews say. Using them as scanners is another test of one's mental balance.)

I might use this episode as an excuse to upgrade the XP computer, but I'd hate to find out the problem is elsewhere on the network.

you can always view your malwarebyte logs to see what was found and removed, open malwarebytes and look at the tabs there is a logs tab.

If it were me to make certain that the infection was actually fully removed which it really sounds like it was not I would go to this malware removal forum, register and post a thread there in that area asking to help check if it is all clean. Once you have their say that you are clean then you know that remnants of the infection are not what is causing the problem but till then anything you do may not work because of those remnants.
go here start a thread in that area and explain what has happened what was found and what you have done etc as you did here,in fact link back to this thread. If you need help doing that just let me know.

Until you investigate what's causing this error Generic Host Process for Win32 services has stopped, etc. You're not going to get those printers working.(I'd follow Raven's advice) There use to be a hot fix(kb84391) for this with service pack 2. Speaking of that you need to be at Service pack 3 now. HP printer drivers can also cause this.

One other truly interesting thing I found on the error Generic Host Process for Win32 services has stopped.

There is an automated fix for it, but when run it disables Network printing! How crazy is that.

It turns out I do have XP with service pack 3. (sorry).

Regardless of whether it was a virus or not, I think the network settings got changed, so I need to work on that first. (Everybody's flipping out that the printer/scanner isn't available). Switching or adding another antivirus / anti-malware product might be in order also. (I use AVG (free version), MalwareBytes, CCleaner). I might bite the bullet and purchase Kaspersky next.

please do yourself a huge favor and just visit the help forum we mentioned. Infections change all kinds of things on the pc which until the full removal occurs will be fruitless to try to fix. Plus you may find the info there you need for the problems you are having.
You still have not answered the first question asked, what was the infection, all you need do is look in the malwarebytes log. With out answers to our questions how can we proceed, guessing is a waste of everyones time.

BTW, a bit more info "on access denied". On another networked computer (Vista), while it does see the printer, it cannot search for other printers on the network. Message is "Active Directory Domain Service" is not available. I think that on the XP computer, it is blocked similarly, with a similar message "Directory service" unavailable.

Thanks for your help. I have to attend to other matters at the moment. I'll bet back to this stuff later this evening hopefully.

Read the posts regarding the inability to print. I have nothing to add as all the suggestions appear to be along the proper lines of diagnostics and resolution.

I also read your comment about the HP AIO printer itself. May I suggest after your printing concern is resolved you visit the HP site dedicated to your AIO, and look for updated software; specifically a patch. HP released a scanning patch along with upgraded software over the summer for some AIOs. Perhaps yours was one and something will resolve your frustration with the unit.

HP officejet J6480 network printer finally up and running again. Turns out it developed a network conflict when I installed the wireless repeater. But that was only the beginning of the fiasco. I wanted to update the firmware and reinstall all the software since I had a couple minor glitches over time. That's when I learned (the hard way) that sometimes one cannot uninstall HP software, and then reinstall it. Look up "Error code 2753" and you will see what folks go through. HP was not helpful for solving it, but I found a working solution from a visitor in their forums (yes, renaming a couple files in the system files did the trick - since they cannot be easily deleted).
