Not really cooking related but....

We are so excited!!!!!!!!!!!

Our daughter, son-in-law and two grand baby boys; Holden (2) & (Roark)born on July 21st are moving back to the west coast!!!!!!!!!!

They have been living in NC (Mint Hill) by Charlotte for the past 4 years. They have decided that they miss all the family here.

All my brothers children have been having babies, plus Nathan's sister has two children.

They will be here by Sept 3rd. It's only a 2 1/2 hour drive from Reno to Sacto area where they have already bought a house.

We will be able to spend birthdays, and holidays with them all!!

I'm sorry about the link... let's try this one. The Apron Book It's very special indeed. Part of the reason for posting about it here is to honor her thoughtfulness and time she put into this gift. She has sewn some curtains and pillow covers but really doesn't care too much about sewing. And that just adds another dimension to the specialness of the gift.

I am a 62 year old widow who had to learn to split wood after my husband died 16 years ago. He'd always done it; I'd never picked up the maul, but I'd gone with him to down and buck up trees (he was a professional forester) and knew a lot about heating with wood and wood cutting/storing/stacking theory from watching him. After he died, I replaced his McCullough chainsaw that I couldn't start with an easier to manage Stihl. I had to order firewood, but one time I was able to salvage a downed huge fir tree near my home that had been bucked up by the utility company to move it off the road where it had fallen. I tried and tried to split it, but couldn't make a dent. I had some wood delivered shortly after and explained my dilemma to the wood guy. He took the time to show me how to split it: making sure it was right side up, looking for the natural cracks and hitting it on the edge of the rounds on one of those cracks; splitting it when it was green and full of moisture (not true for every species). I had to have the maul handle replace with fiberglass from all the bad hits, but I slowly figured out how to do it and now split all my own wood with a maul and sometimes a wedge and have for the last 16 years. Don't need no stinkin' wood splitter. :-D (I heat almost exclusively with wood and harvest trees sometimes from my own property). I figure if I can split firewood, anyone can. Maple is more difficult, but I can still do it...so can you!

Epicerie Boulud is worth a visit. Satisfies the sweet and savory. Opens at 7am. Makes a nice picnic with Central Park nearby. When i have family and friends visiting i stock the fridge with a variety of beverages and insist they take a few along in their pack or bag. Beverages and thirst eat up time and the pocketbook. A few good city APPs exist now that even help find bathrooms. Check TimeOut on-line for decent places all over the city. I usually design destinations depending on visitors personalities and desires. If you like unusual spices a must visit is Kalustyan's. I've just run out of Urfa Biber, a Turkish smoked pepper. (need to swing by soon and stock up) When my BIL visits, a foodie, we do a culinary tour all over the city. I always have a list of hidden favorites but many are found in TimeOut searches. Cheap eats from El Malecon uptown for Dominican chicken to Pho Bang for Vietnamese downtown. Grand Central Oyster Bar....and then we empty the bank account for one fancy meal. This is a totally different idea, but I wanted to mention it because I recently rediscovered my immersion blender. I wanted something I could take out of town with me that was small and easy to pack, and...I know this would sound odd to some...offered a little bit of ''help'' in case I decided I wanted to bake. (A readily-available kitchen is a good thing.) Anyway, I realized my immersion blender (Kitchen Aid) had a whip attachment (like a miniature hand-mixer) that I'd never used. Eureka! Of course I had to try it out, and it works beautifully. If your friend doesn't have one, she would probably love it for blending soups, making smoothies or chopping things. The best part is they're not terrible expensive. (FYI; maybe not for now, but for the future.)

Linda, how wonderful. Most of my family has managed to stay pretty close to "home", but Elery's family is pretty far flung and he bemoans the fact that he has three grandsons in California that he sees a couple of times a year and so barely knows.

I told him when we got the house built at the farm, we'd buy plane tickets and let the boys come in the summer and spend as many weeks as they cared to, fishing with Elery and riding horses and playing with ATVs...

the last time they came David and a friend brought out the 4 wheelers and those three boys thought it was more fun than they'd ever had. That and gathering eggs, go figure.

That is good news and worth yelling from the roof tops.

I can relate! I live 2 miles from my grands and still don't see them as often as I would like; but I consider myself blessed.

Yippee! Good for you! My furthest away are about 4 hours, but we don't get together that often cause 4 hours is 4 hours and everybody is busy. You must be ecstatic! Lucky you!

Linda that's wonderful! We will be in Reno for a short trip for the air races, so I won't have time to see you and Lee unless you are at the races too, although our friends will probably make dinner plans for Sat and Sun evenings. I will email you when I know the plans. Tell Lee that those weird cooking forum people say Hello!
