Alright, alright.....I'll give my little dust bunnies a new home and invest in more RAM, which I had wanted to do anyway, and maybe even an extra fan somewhere, but the original question still persists....why such a "hard" freeze, and why at such a specific event? As I mentioned, I can work a long time and save many times by clicking the "save" icon in the toolbar, but using "save" or "save as" in the fly down window under the "file" command usually ends up in a total lock-up....and the length of time I have been working doesn't seem to matter. My machine has locked me out as early as the first save event. I work with Corel and have no problem (so far) but working with ArtCam or ArtShade...I freeze..hard and total. This is what makes me think there is a deeper, more specific problem than the general heat/RAM thing. I rarely have occasion to work with word processing, or data bases on this machine, so I don't know how they behave during a save. I just find it interesting/frustrating that my machine locks at such a specific event.. and just have to wonder......Is how computers handle a "save" or "save as" command specific to individual programs, or is it an operating system issue?

I have had occasional trouble printing - but usually it's a pdf file that only Acrobat will read (or at least some pdf readers won't read them). had this experience with some Medicare/government documents. Saving to my hard drive doesn't help. Bob - I think you had the right document. I looked at properties as well - and sure enough, it says printing not allowed. This is really bizarre to me that printing is not allowed. That makes it very difficult to refer to the manual while you are actually working with the software. I see that the author wants me to ask permission to print - it's password protected. He's asked to be contacted via the forum - so I've just done that. Bob - thanks for the linux/ubuntu link. I have no idea what any of that means. I can download and burn to disc - but don't know what it would look like to boot into linux - never done it - don't know if I could figure it out. I think this is useful sometimes - but this isn't so urgent. So I will leave learning linux for another time when I'm not drowning in more pressing tech clean-ups. Thank you. Lynn.

I would not allow site advisor to update in fact it is no longer on any of my machines, you can remove it from add remove programs. it once was a good tool, but it got very greedy and wanted to really take over and stopped letting people make changes to it,and started installing components with out letting people know just like what just happened to you with that application installer cleanup app, that upset a lot of people and many many people left it then which is when I left it. It is McAfee ! Now instead we suggest using WOT on all the browsers it does a better job and it is not intrusive into the system. Win98 and WinME 1. Disk Clean Up Click 'Start' >'Programs' >'Accessories' >'System Tools' >'Disk Cleanup'. Select the drive you wish to clean and click "OK". Select desired Options. Click 2. Clean Cookies, Temporary Folders, Temporary Internet Files and History From the Desktop, open 'My Computer' >C Drive >Windows >Cookies Select all files..right click and select "Delete". Return to the Windows folder. Scroll to and open the 'Temp' folder. From the toolbar at the top of the window, click "Tools">Viewing Options. Check to insure that "Show All Files" is selected. Select all the files within the "Temp" folder and delete them. Return to the Windows folder. Locate and open the 'Temporary Internet Files' folder. Select all files within the "Temporary Internet Files" folder, right click and select "Delete". Return to the Windows directory. Locate the "History" folder. Select all files within and delete. Return to the C Drive directory. Locate the "Temp" folder. Open it and delete all files within. 3. Remove Unwanted or Unused Programs To view programs installed on your computer, click 'Start' >Control Panel >Add/Remove Programs. To remove a program, select and click the 'Add/Remove' button. After uninstalling a program, you should re-start the computer. If you are going to uninstall more than one program, re-start the computer after each is removed. 4. Scan Disk It is a good idea to shut-down your Antivirus program prior to running Scandisk and Defrag. Click Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Scan Disk. Select a drive to scan. You will notice an option to perform a "Thorough' scan. Unless you are having issues with the hard drive, it is not necessary to do a 'thorough' scan. A 'thorough' scan can take a great deal of time to complete, whereas a 'Normal' scan does not. Select "Convert fragmented files to freespace". Click OK. Remember...you cannot do anything else on the computer while running Scandisk. 5. Defrag You should run Defragmenter after running Scandisk. Click 'Start' >Programs>Accessories>System Tools> Defragmenter. Select the drive and click 'Defragment'. Restart the Computer upon completion. Remember... you cannot do anything else on the computer while running Defrag.
