WinPatrol found this. Is it safe?

I downloaded WinPatrol when it was free - but, honestly, it just scares me. It's constantly popping up with things that I don't understand. Usually it's when I'm trying to do something I feel secure about so I allow it. But I'm tempted to disable or uninstall the program bc. if I never understand the alerts - and it supplies me with endless false positives which I learn to ignore (or allow), I'm not sure it's doing me any good. I wouldn't know a false positive from a real positive problem. Any advice on either getting rid of this program - or learning how to utilize it properly?

Specifically now, it's alerting me that the following new window services has been installed: McAfee Application Installer Cleanup:

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\023586~1.EXE C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\McAfee\INSTAL~1\cleanup.ini -cleanup -nolog -service

I'm not sure why my computer would be trying to install anything from McAfee. I had the computer shut off for a few days while I was away. Upon reopening, I ran ccleaner. It finished. Then I installed updates from superantispyware. Then tried to open up Firefox. In the midst of that, this Scotty alert popped up. Is this part of ccleaner? Is it safe? I don't know what it is.

Do you have McAfee Site Advisor installed? This appears to be from that program.

When you installed the updates for Superantispyware did you run a scan? If not perhaps you should to satisfy yourself

If WinPatrol scares you remove it.

do you by any chance have mcafee site advisor on your pc?

winpatrol is an excellent program have you tried to read the info on how to use it and try to understand it?

I would not allow that mcafee application. if you did not ask for it then definitely block it.

Oh Michele, hon, you're not going wrong. I have a big problem with both the "N" and the "W" words. My kids learned really young with the "N" word, I use to smack them in the back of the head for it and they would even hear me say something to my parents, who are very old, deep southern, about that word. Like you, I find it degrading and rude as all daylights. It's used in the derogatory fashion, not the true definition of the word, which has no racial connotations.So they know well and better than to use it, but to be honest, each of my older boys tried it again when they hit pre-teen and at about mid-teen and still got smacked. Tiffy still hasn't tried it since she was young and heard her grandmother spout it. She's almost 15 now. I don't doubt that Vincent and Devin will try it again at least during one phase or the other. And they'll get smacked and talked to seriously at that time. Tommy and Jarret tried the "W" word when they were young teens, it had just become the latest "hot" word. After trying,and failing, to convince me that I was just behind, they never said it in front of me again. I told them that I found it as degrading as I did the "N" word and the "B" word to describe women in general. I don't physically discipline my kids very often, so when I do, they know it's serious. And more so once I explain the meaning of the word and why it's degrading and show them the correlation between it and other degrading words. Like Tommy likes to wear his ballcap backwards, does that make him the "W" word? Jarret likes rap, does that make the "W" word apply? They all use slang any more, so the same question again. Once they realize that it doesn't really apply to them and they wouldn't want others applying it because it would hurt their feelings, they stop using it... at least in my hearing. The same as using the word gay. Some people live the way they live regardless of whether others approve or not, as is their right in this country. Applying a label to them doesn't help the situation. My kids eventually learned to use a person's name when speaking about them, not applying labels, at least when talking to me or where they think I can hear. I keep adding that part because two of them are completely grown, so their choices are their own, but if nothing else, perhaps they will remember what I've taught them :)And at least I can sleep at night knowing that I did what I could to prevent another bigot in this world. WOW deb!! what a nice box to send!! i know you are gonna love to plant them sandy!! :')) when i went to go get em's gloves they had mostly little ones, then i was thinking well my hands are bigger, and what if she's like me and likes them looser?? hmm so i tried a bunch of different gloves on, and then i found a pair i thought were cool, and grabbed some, LOL and was just praying that she didn';t have dainty hands!! Ahhhh, you're going to see THe WOrld! We went there for our first and only time a year and a half ago. I also planned out the things that I really really wanted to see and do. THa'ts really important since there is NO WAY that you will be able to see and do everything in one trip...unless you're staying for a month!! I'd suggest not hopping from park to park in one day because you'll spend alot of your time either waiting for or on shuttle buses. That time is better spent within a park. Take time out to find a quiet spot and have a little rest if you're not going back to your hotel mid-day. If you buy a refillable cup, you can only use it at that particular hotel/resort....so think about where you are going to be when you need it filled. We used the one from our hotel since we are there first thing in the morning and again in the evening. If you get tired of the parks (noise and the Disney theme pounding in your head!) and you have the time...absolutely go to one of the water parks. Several people changed our minds into going to one and we were sooooo glad we did...it's a really nice getaway. If you bring that small backpack along...put your things into ziplock bags inside it...will be totally dry if you want to run through fountains etc (hey, it's Disneyworld...you can be goofy!) If you are sensitive to heat, buy one of those battery operated spray/fan/mister bottles from a vendor. They were a lifesaver for my daughter. Refill them with ice (Free) from all vendors. Wear a hat, waterproof sunscreen and sunglasses. Oh yeah, and don't forget the most important thing....TAKE ME!!!! I learned everything I neded to know from the Disney (World and Land) web sites....the people on those forums are absolutely fanatical about all things Disney and are worth their weight in gold as far as great advise goes. They'll even know all about what particular rooms to ask for at the hotel and all sorts of stuff you didn't even know existed. Be prepared to spend alot of time tough....there is soooo much info.

Winpatrol might be a great program but if it scares the lady as she suggests then it is useless to her and she needs to remove it or spend time trying to understand it.

Lynn has been here often enough seeking help so it would be fair to assume she has sufficient protection without something scary bothering her.

Many people get a little scared when using a program they are not familiar with which is why I suggested reading up on how it works to get a better understanding.
Just like a firewall will pop up warnings but once we learn what they are and what they mean we realize it is one more program protecting us.

I don't feel I said anything untoward and of course I realize she can certainly make any decision she chooses to.

RC as usual you gave sound advice. My point was not so much about the advice but rather Lynn's experience with WinPatrol. I fail to see any benefit in keeping a program that unsettles the user.

A few years ago I had a program that seemed determined to ruin my life on the computer with warning pop ups. As good as the program was touted to be I felt the constant irritation of the pop ups outweighed the benefits so I removed it.

Owbist and Ravencajun - thank you. I may leave WinPatrol on for now (since it was free) - and if time allows at some point, I'll read the links RC provided.

In the meantime, I do have McAfee Site Advisor. So if I recall, it is a Firefox addon? So when I opened Firefox and said ok to install updates to my add-ons, it seems likely that McAfee Site Advisor was updating. So should I allow it? I did not click allow or disallow yet?

And yes Owbist, you are right. I think I've been around here long enough to have good protection. I have Avast Anti-virus, Malwarebytes, Superantispyware and Spywareblaster. And I've even learned enough to update them regularly and run them. Just ran Superantispyware and found no infected files.

I would not allow site advisor to update in fact it is no longer on any of my machines, you can remove it from add remove programs. it once was a good tool, but it got very greedy and wanted to really take over and stopped letting people make changes to it,and started installing components with out letting people know just like what just happened to you with that application installer cleanup app, that upset a lot of people and many many people left it then which is when I left it. It is McAfee !
Now instead we suggest using WOT on all the browsers it does a better job and it is not intrusive into the system.

Thanks for the tutorial. I think WinPatrol is worth keeping. This week's experience with it has been quite illuminating. First, it alerted me to McAfee Site Advisor trying to install something additional - which I don't want. And now I know I don't want McAfee Site Advisor either.

Just today, WinPatrol caught IE trying to install a google toolbar (which I said No to - and it tried several more times. I rarely use IE, but today my gmail wasn't working on Firefox for a few hours, so I opened IE).

Now I also have a question because WinPatrol caught IE trying to install:
IE7Pro V 2.5.1

Should I install this verison of IE7Pro?

I do use WOT and love it. So bye-bye McAfee Site Advisor.

IE7Pro is an add-on to Internet Explorer 6, 7, and 8 that aims to enhance the feature set provided by the browser.

So if you don't use IE really no sense installing it.

Thanks, Zep. If it's not a security update, I don't see any reason to enhance IE's features. Usually I only go there for Windows Updates.

many people installed IE7pro when they moved from IE6, it gave many of the features we liked with IE6 back to IE7, that is probably why you have it as an add on. It has some very good features.
