Building a Home

please see my photos and help with house color

I also posted on the painting forum but am hoping expanding to the building forum will gain some other views... we are remodeling our lake front house and Im thinking we should add a "banding" on the lakeside with a different color on the bottom due to the large wall space. Im open to any color combinations also...as you can see we have red windows and I am also including a picture of a color scheme I think goes with the windows...any thoughts?

Nice place. The finished photo is nice too - for colors. Scroll down to Halfbarnranchjake's post on Fri, Jun 16, 06 at 13:14 to click on his home for more inspiration.

Also, search the BAH for "red windows." Several have used them. One picture was posted on the recent "to stone or not to stone" thread.

You might want to post on the Decorating Forum. Some folks on their might do some mock ups in different colors for you.

Your home is going to be beautiful, threeapples. Your determination to get all the details right will pay big dividends. You are getting such wonderful advice here from lots of experts. I hesitate to chime in, but don't want you to make the same mistake I made. Our home was a Georgian similar to yours. Our brick, a Boral wood mold in 'Fairfield', was almost identical to the brick you selected. Windows, trim, columns, etc were white. Everyone involved in the planning assumed white gutters and downspouts were the best choice. They were wrong. Those white downspouts were the only thing I did not LOVE about our house! IMO, downspouts should do their job, blend in and disappear. The white was so very obvious against the brick. The rear elevation was all brick with brick columns. The only white was trim, French doors, and balcony posts. We used copper downspouts there. Over a few months the copper developed a nice brownish patina and disappeared into the brick. IMO, any option is better than white.

Just a warning on white. It does not hold up on the brick well and I have found it looks bad after a while. Grey, that looks nice and holds up well. there is a home decorating forum on here under "that home site" and they do a lot of photo-shopping of ideas including house exteriors. I posted my house on there and they did it in about 15 versions which included the landscaping. You might want to try them and if they help post a link on here so we can go see. I have included the link to my house. the thread is old so you will notice that a lot of photos are missing. Scroll down and you see many ideas they contributed although the best ones are missing.. Stormy,

Very nice. My suggestion would be to put the bandboard up whether or not you go with different colors top and bottom. Perhaps you could consider a different texture siding on the top vs bottom, for example horizontal clapboard on lower, shingles or shakes on top, or vertical plank style siding or board/batten, depending on the style/feel you are looking to achieve.

We are doing this with our home, cement clapboard on the bottom, bandboard, then a vertical cement siding, a second bandboard and cedar shingles at the top of the gable. The two sidings will be the same Cabot Mountainbrush (a sagey green/gray) with Navajo White (creamish) trim and white Andersen windows. The shingles will be natural cedar stain. Sorry no pics since we are just in process now of siding and staining, but the effect is vintage/craftsman style.
