If history repeats itself it will begin selectively auto-upgrading in the next few days. Not all updating users will get the upgrade on-demand at the same time. Grisoft usually spreads it over a period so don't be concerned if you are not getting the upgrade with your normal updating. It might be over a couple weeks at a minmum. I for one do not see a major need to rush the upgrading at this time. I would recommend be patient. If you are familiar with FileHippo, you will see on RC's link that there isn't a Change Log tab so users don't even know what the changes are yet. They are more than likely minor fixes as the numeric change is still in the suffix. DA

from AVG faq: How to install AVG without LinkScanner If you wish to install AVG 8.0 Free Edition without the LinkScanner component, or uninstall this component from your program, please proceed as follows: * Download the AVG 8.0 Free Edition installation package from our website. * Run the installation with the parameters /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSearch. One way to achieve this is to: o save the AVG Free installation file directly to disk C:\ o open menu Start -> Run o type c:\avg_free_stf_*.exe /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSearch * The installation will be started, and AVG will be installed without the LinkScanner component. To add or remove some AVG Free components, such as e-mail scanner plugins, please proceed as follows: * please download the latest AVG installation installation file from the Download section of our website * When you are prompted, please do not open this file directly from the Internet, but click the "Save" button and choose a location where the installation file should be stored. We recommend saving the file to the Desktop. * Locate the downloaded AVG installation file (it has a four color square icon and its name starts with AVG...) and launch the installation by double-clicking on it. * The installation process recognizes the existence of installed AVG and the Add/Remove Components option is offered. Reinstalling and using the Add/Remove Components option is necessary for example in the case that there is a new supported e-mail client (MS Outlook/The Bat!) installed on the PC after the first installation of AVG Free. And be sure you go to your browser add-on area and disabled the AVG 8.0 Web toolbar and anything else related to AVG. Go to this faq for more info AVG faq

AVG seems to have shot themselves in the foot this time. Progress means updates of course. I upgraded to AVG8 and somewhere around that time minor troubles started. For a few weeks things were not right and I was unable to pinpoint the cause. I remove a few programs and brought a few back and tried a few others, one that is no longer on my computer is AVG. Not suggesting they are the cause but with the 'adjustments' I have made my issues seem to be resolved. No doubt I will return to AVG somewhere down the road but for now I am quite happy without it.

here ya go Jane you can find this info on that avg faq I posted right above your post. 1257: What is the AVG Security Toolbar? The AVG Toolbar is a new tool which works together with the AVG LinkScanner and checks search results of the supported Internet search engines (Yahoo!, Google, MSN). If you select to install the toolbar during the installation of AVG 8.0 Free Edition, it will be added into your Internet Explorer and/or Mozilla Firefox. The AVG Toolbar can be used to control the AVG LinkScanner and to adjust its behavior, and to update your AVG in case new updates are available. If you decide that you do not wish to use the toolbar, you can either skip its installation during the AVG installation process, or disable it manually in your Internet browser: * Internet Explorer - use the mouse right-click on the toolbar and check-off the AVGTOOLBAR option in the list. * Mozilla Firefox - Tools menu -> Add-ons. Find the AVG Toolbar here and click on the Disable button. Disabling or uninstalling the AVG Toolbar has no negative effect on the level of security provided by AVG Free Edition. The only consequence of missing toolbar is an absence of some of the options, and less verbose information about the threats found by the AVG LinkScanner. The main settings of the LinkScanner component can be still configured in AVG Free User Interface. Note: AVG Toolbar contains also a Yahoo! search box, which is an integral part of the toolbar and can not be removed separately.
