actually AVG 8.5 is the latest version out, there were some early reports on some of the other forums I am on of problems, I know they were working on them. So if you do get AVG make sure you get the latest version avg 8.5.278 released I no longer use AVG just had too many problems when the went to 8. They decided to compile several tools into one with 8 rather than just leaving it the good stand alone AV product it was and that was the mistake. They had a great AV and a great product in Ewido and trying to combine it all together with some other items just conflicted with too many systems. I now use AVAST free and love it. you will want to read these AVG FAQ sheets prior to install to find out how to do it with out the link scanner and things that are causing problems. FAQ As with most things pc related it might work just great for some but really cause others a very bad day, I personally just can not discount the number of people who did have some bad days. Over on BBR/DSLR on the security forum there are some excellent threads about AVG 8 you can search for.

BT just make sure that staying where you are is not leaving you with out protection, if they are stopping the updates for the version you have you will be with out protection also. What you can do is go download the new version of AVG and save it to your pc but do not install it yet, disconnect from the internet, go to add remove programs and remove the old version then go install the new version, reboot the pc, connecting to the internet at reboot, then go get the updates for the new version by telling it to check for updates. Another alternative is once you have downloaded the new version to the pc immediately copy that to a cd/dvd or flash drive, so you have a back up copy, then go ahead and try the install of the new one with out removing the old one it may go smoothly for you and then you would be done, but if it did not, then just disconnect from the internet, go to add remove and remove all versions it shows of AVG, reboot (just to make sure) then pop in the backup you made of the new version and load it and install. NO need to go back on the internet while unprotected. I do that with my programs anyway, I make a back up copy just in case I should need them and not have to go back online to get them. And I agree any time I add or remove or make changes I do create a new restore point labeled so I know exactly where to go back to should I need to.

AVG seems to have shot themselves in the foot this time. Progress means updates of course. I upgraded to AVG8 and somewhere around that time minor troubles started. For a few weeks things were not right and I was unable to pinpoint the cause. I remove a few programs and brought a few back and tried a few others, one that is no longer on my computer is AVG. Not suggesting they are the cause but with the 'adjustments' I have made my issues seem to be resolved. No doubt I will return to AVG somewhere down the road but for now I am quite happy without it.

I am unfortunately seeing still a lot of negative reports on AVG8 on the other forums, in fact I am going to be changing one of my windows pcs from McAfee to something else, and with all the complaints still I am going to go with Avast for now. I think they will eventually get all the kinks worked out of version 8, they need to because a lot of people have jumped ship over the recent problems. If I was going with AVG8 I would definitely follow the install instructions from their FAQ and NOT add on the extras.
