Hello all,

Two points to discuss here.

Firstly, like all companies we have to develop a strategy to get our users past the end of old windows editions. MS will stop supporting these older operating systems and we need to move along and provide software that works best on the newer OSs.

Secondly we need to encourage users to upgrade to our newer products so that we can remain focused on a select number of products, and keep improving these products.

The result is ever-changing dates for releases, end of support dates, end of definition updates downloads etc, etc. its not chaos - but the different dates and changes do cause unwanted confusion.

As you will all remember from AVG 7... There will be a final date, then a REALLY final date. We will be fair to our customers and we will give due notice of changes that may seriously affect the users.

May 31st is VERY close. I can assure you that this date will not be the end of 7.5. However the 31.12.08 date is not cast in stone - though I consider it a solid date. AVG may bring termination of specific sevices or products forward, but if we do we will do so responsibly and by giving fair notice.

We will make official announcements HERE on this forum and on our corporate website, and resellers will be emailed directly.

I apologise for the differing information given by sales and by other sources, but I stand by the 31.12.08 date for now, and will put any changes here.

AVG seems to have shot themselves in the foot this time. Progress means updates of course. I upgraded to AVG8 and somewhere around that time minor troubles started. For a few weeks things were not right and I was unable to pinpoint the cause. I remove a few programs and brought a few back and tried a few others, one that is no longer on my computer is AVG.

Not suggesting they are the cause but with the 'adjustments' I have made my issues seem to be resolved. No doubt I will return to AVG somewhere down the road but for now I am quite happy without it.

I've been using AVG 7.5 in hopes that by 12/31/08 (or whenever they discontinue support) they will have problems ironed out. I have an AMD processor and the update seemed to have extra problems with those.

So far, it updates every day. Sandy

I'm about as far south west as you can get in Oregon. Six or seven miles, as the crow flies. That area, way out back and off to the right, is where I'm currently hackin' my way through! These are deeded water rights from the 1800's and comes from a large creek. I have to make my way to the uphill intake. I can't believe how many huge downed trees are across it. Not to mention a bazzillion blackberry bushes! I'm using an axe, a chainsaw, a backhoe and chains...and it's still inch by inch. I'm also doing every other ranch thing alone. So...my orchids get a lot of neglect. I've never been able to get any bad photos of Blue-spots, let alone good ones. Their reputation is well deserved!! :~( Everyone else will at least come out for food, if they're feeling spooky. These guys can see movement from across the street! ;~) Photos? Probably not goin' to happen! My best Rainbow darter is the same way. I just have blurry shots that only hint at his beauty! ;~( The B banded's are easy!! Granted, my conditions are perfect!! ;~) Actually, they really are pretty close to it! I don't over stock, so everyone has individual territories and the load on the system is light. (Not my first rodeo!) ;~) Soft, cold, acidic water and lots of live food! Most of what I have will not touch anything else. I spend the occasional late night at some of the ponds with nets and lights for live food! Otherwise, the whole thing is easy! Everything was set up perfectly from the start and has, for the most part, stayed that way! I've done difficult and I prefer this! ;~) I have enough crap that makes for work and this is supposed to be pleasure. So...I make sure it is! Scott

When I installed the new version - it removed the old by itself. Very easy install. I did NOT choose the repair install - I chose the first one, as directed on the AVG site. Computer updated when I went back online. I also put the file I downloaded on a flash drive and installed it on my other computers and have shared it with my other dial-up friends. It was about a 1.5 hour download on dialup.

BT just make sure that staying where you are is not leaving you with out protection, if they are stopping the updates for the version you have you will be with out protection also. What you can do is go download the new version of AVG and save it to your pc but do not install it yet, disconnect from the internet, go to add remove programs and remove the old version then go install the new version, reboot the pc, connecting to the internet at reboot, then go get the updates for the new version by telling it to check for updates. Another alternative is once you have downloaded the new version to the pc immediately copy that to a cd/dvd or flash drive, so you have a back up copy, then go ahead and try the install of the new one with out removing the old one it may go smoothly for you and then you would be done, but if it did not, then just disconnect from the internet, go to add remove and remove all versions it shows of AVG, reboot (just to make sure) then pop in the backup you made of the new version and load it and install. NO need to go back on the internet while unprotected. I do that with my programs anyway, I make a back up copy just in case I should need them and not have to go back online to get them. And I agree any time I add or remove or make changes I do create a new restore point labeled so I know exactly where to go back to should I need to.

I am unfortunately seeing still a lot of negative reports on AVG8 on the other forums, in fact I am going to be changing one of my windows pcs from McAfee to something else, and with all the complaints still I am going to go with Avast for now. I think they will eventually get all the kinks worked out of version 8, they need to because a lot of people have jumped ship over the recent problems. If I was going with AVG8 I would definitely follow the install instructions from their FAQ and NOT add on the extras.

I too am having problems since updating to AVG8 and am wondering about removing and reinstalling 7.5. What is the general consensus here and thanks,

Did anybody else have problems with Firefox crashing after installing AVG8? (FF 2.0.0.14 my version)

There have been prior discussions regaring AVG8 on other threads here at the Forum with a lot of information shared. Perhaps an query on the search engine located on the homepage will assist in answering all your concerns.

Having said that, I find v8 bloated and cumbersome. I really don't like the Link Scanner and have disabled it. Admittedly, my Vista system works well with it and I have no concerns of any type In comparison to prior versions, I just don't like it. I guess that's what makes the world go round.

Do you mind sharing what program you are using in place of AVG8 ? And ,
do you recommend removing and reinstalling 7?

I have disabled the link scanner also - but I dislike the red exclamation on the icon in the tray.

AVG8 is certainly not dialup friendly!

I have success with PC Tools AntiVirus (free). When I first got Vista, PC Tools was the only AntiVirus that would work, after deleting Windows Defender.
