Vista and PAV...Personal Antivirus

Hi, my aiater downloaded and installed Personal Antivirus and all hell broke loose. She has Vista and now NO INTERNET access. I don't know how to help her with this as I have xp. Is there somm kind soul that has Vista AND Free Long Distance that would be willing to call her to try to help her? Thank you

Perhaps more experienced boad members may differ with my comments, however to me a quick and simple solution is as follows:

1. Uninstall this Personal Antivirus and get Interent access restored

2. Then go to www.avast.com, download Avast and install.

That should make things right.

One caveat - I haven't used Vista but it works with XP and Win 2K.

She uninstalled through Add/Remove and when she does a search the stuff still comes up in results. She DOES NOT HAVE access now to the internet. Gets msg that Explorer is blocked. Anyone?

Jean I only use MS Essentials on my Win 7 machine. I have been clean since July with the beta version and October with the real stuff. When you get your new computer fired up you will see small icons near the clock. Clicking the up arrow will bring a small pop up where you will see the green bungalow shaped icon for MS Essentials, as long as it is green and has a check mark you are good to go.

The reason it used to be advised to disable antivirus programs when installing software was to prevent it from interfering. The concept was that something was making changes to the computer and the A/V tried to prevent those changes. With the advent of Windows Vista and UAC, requiring elevation approval for programs to access/change system files this is no longer necessary. There is one time when it is generally still recommended to disable A/V and that is when installing a Service Pack. There are also times when, during malware cleanup, we recommend disabling security programs so they don't interfere with the process. For years I used the free ones, like Zone, and also the spyware ones, plus the free firewall. Then I tried Zone Alarm security suite, which worked super great for 5 mo. It had the firewall, spyware, and antivirus all in one item, which was nice. Then on one update, it made the machine go crazy, and I could not update it. We tried for 2 weeks with no success, and I could not use the pc. Finally it went in the shop, and the fellow said that the Zone S. Suite was conflicting with Windows programs. So it had to be removed. That happened in June, and I go on their site, to see how it is going on, and they are still having problems. They also refused to refund my money, which was over half a yr. left. Recently I put in Vipre, after much study. You can get a 15 day trial on it, and also the company has a firewall that is quite good. I bought the virus protection after the trial, and it also has spyware protection, and I love it. Also it uses the less amount of space on your pc, according to their chart on many of the virus protection plans. I had two professionals tell me that Vipre was the way to go, so I have had it now for several months. Darlene

A member of another forum I visit recently had PAV and after many suggestions reported that AVG with current definitions removed it.

He also reported that Malwarebytes could not remove it as the files were protected.

If she has no Internet access, you or someone will have to help her by downloading AVG or AVAST to a portable (thumb) USB drive and install it on her computer and run it as DA suggested. Undoubtedly this PAV is rogue software of some kind.

Sapphires, I Googled this program and it is a rogue program. Take a look at the explanation in the link I've given.

Personal Anti virus information see link below, can the user boot to (Safe Mode with networking) and then download and run malwarebytes.

The link above in grandms post is a risky link I would avoid the link..

It's a rogue with a trojan multidropper. I spent time removing it on 2 computers this weekend. I used Superantispyware and it worked great. I'm sure Malwarebytes would clean it too, I just like Superantispyware.

Like Pam I used Superantispyware to remove it from a friend's computer. The computer had been scanned just 5 days prior to this infection.

after she gets her pc somewhat back to a stable state she needs to learn about pc security she definitely needs to learn about rogue programs that are not what they sell themselves to be but are instead infections.
I would tell her to head to LzD forum, register and ask them to take a look at her pc and see what else needs to be removed.

She can use a thumb drive or someone can burn to cd the programs she needs to run to start cleaning up, I would run both programs mentioned superantispyware and malwarebytes, update both prior to running full scans both are free.
also if she actually gave them her credit card info I would be calling immediately to put a flag on it and change all passwords to everything.

Zep, thanks for calling attention to that link. I used another browser and WOT informed that it had a bad reputation. Wish WOT worked with Opera. I may have to stop using my favorite browser now.

I didn't know that about opera I have heard nothing but good about opera oh well, have to be careful when you search for that stuff half the time it leads you to the infection itself.
