What were BTU numbers on older stovetops?

I am a new member, and want to extend thanks to you GW posters for information I have already received via searches. I am looking for a new gas cooktop, and will probably post a separate topic about this, but first...

What I'm replacing is a Chambers gas cooktop purchased in 1984. Specs for new cooktops all talk about their BTU ratings, but when you bought a home cooktop back in the 1980s I don't think BTU's were even discussed.

Does anyone know what the average BTU output was on such older non-commercial units? Having a number would give me some basis for comparison when reviewing specs for the new ones. All the new cooktops I've seen at dealers are display only, not hooked up.

Thanks!
