Printer stopped printing

I have a HP deskjet 5400 printer with Linux operating system. It was working and than all of a sudden it refused to print anything and the resume light keeps blinking. There's nothing in the manual that explains it.

I pulled the power cord for 30 seconds but it didn't help.

I looked on the HP tech help site and it listed about 6 reasons why the resume light would be on.

I tried the one that said it might need new ink cartridges and low and behold! I replaced the cartridges and it worked.

Unfortunately, I have the Linux OS and it doesn't tell me when I'm getting low on ink which is why I didn't know it. The printing wasn't faint so I had no idea.

You can always go to File, then Print Preview, which will show you what the pages will look like and how many there are. Then, if you hit Print from that window you can choose which pages to print if you don't want all of them. Sometimes I forget to do that and, if I realize there will be more pages than I want coming out, the fastest thing for me to do is just pull all the paper from the tray so the printer can't feed anything more. Then I go into my printer folder (usually the icon at the bottom of the screen) and choose "Cancel all documents" under the printer tab. I find that, if I just turn off the printer and then turn it back on, the print job is still there and will want to print unless I do the cancel operation that I just described.

Marie - I have a HP printer that takes the seperate ink tanks (although not the same ones as you) - when I run it out of ink, I have the same issue. Or if I have not used the printer for a while. To open the Toolbox - go to your start menu on your computer. That is the big "windows" button on the bottom left of your toolbar. Select ALL PROGRAMS and navigate to HP Solution Center. When that is open - choose "Settings" and then look for "Printer Toolbox" - When you get to the Toolbox - first "clean the printheads" - then "align the printheads" That usually fixes it for me. Sometimes I have to clean the printheads twice to get it printing good again. I am also able to access this from the buttons on my printer. There is a menu button on mine.

pk, yes, frustrated is an understatement. Don't like spending so much time on such things that are probably easy. Did a lot of research with no resolve. Printer is hooked up to a desktop; DT hooked up to router. I don't "think" the printer is connected directly to router. Not sure what ethernet is. Laptop works wirelessly to the printer. Laptop is 8 mos old. Was working perfectly fine with printer until this new router was installed the other day. I have not tried plugging the printer directly to laptop. I'll try that in the morning. Brain is fried right now so I'll continue on this quest in the morning since I need the printer for work. Thanks for the help. Wonder if uninstalling the computer software from laptop, then reinstalling it again, will work.

maybee, I'm probably grasping at straws, but I have an HP Laserjet P1006 that stopped printing when it ran out of paper, leaving documents in the queue. Since you are probably as desperate as I was, I'll pass on what worked for me. I know it sounds silly. :) These are the instructions that I found: Raise the lid of the print cartridge area 5 times all the way up and all the way down and it will print a page with hundreds of tiny horizontal lines. After that was printed, the queue was cleared and it printed again. Just a thought and I hope it works for you.

This may be the only post I have ever seen on this forum in which a Linux user didn't mention which distro he/she was using. Some work better with HP than others, I would think. Might be helpful to know.

Just curious here.

Was a generic driver from Linux used to install the printer or was the HP installation disk used? I ask as in Windows use if the disk isn't used some of the printer features may not be present; such as the Toolbox which I believe includes the ink management.
