Refrigerator storage container suggestions, please

I'm looking for the perfect way to store left overs, cut up fruit, bits of stuff, washed lettuce, etc. etc. In the past, I've tried the Rubbermaid refrigerator containers (they stain), Lock & Lock (They seem to take up lots of room), glass (I clumsily broke some) and wondered what you use to keep things in your refrigerator.

I'd love something to use that would stack nicely and that you could see through and that comes in lots of sizes. Is there such a thing????

Does anyone have any good ideas for me to try?

Happygram, I'm afraid I'm not going to be much help. My favorite containers are the glass Pyrex, but I find the plastic/rubber lids break. I have a nice selection of Lock N Lock that I really like, but many of my storage containers are either glass quart canning jars with lids or the disposable Gladware things because people take leftovers home but never return the containers. I stopped giving them the good containers, now they all get Gladware.

If you have a Dollar Store or Family Dollar near you, you can find cheap clear plastic containers in a variety of sizes and shapes (I prefer square or rectangle because they fit my refrigerator shelves better and use less space than round ones). I keep four or five separate for storing tomato-based concoctions like marinara sauce. When they get stained, that's okay. I know they are clean, they just look a little pinkish!
And as Annie said, when you send something home with someone, you don't have to worry about getting an expensive container back.

Please donÂt get too carried away with the "after frost kills" them. I have made this statement for people to understand the poor practice of harvesting early. The frost does kill the foliage and basically slows or stops productive rhizome growth (not totally). Normally, frost (light freezing) will indicate the soil temperatures have also fallen to a temperature range of ideal storage temperatures. Rhizome metabolism has also adjusted and the sugar to carbohydrate food reservoir is more complete. All these things play some role in successful winter storage. Frost or light freezing weather will severely "burn" the above ground foliage. Hard freezing weather typically causes the stems (canes) to turn to mush and fall over. This makes for a slimy plant to handle. It might be advisable to cut the mushy canes and remove the refuse from the growing site and allow the plants to stay in place to help dehydrate the canes (dry out) before digging. Sometimes the gardener may choose to leave the plants in place for a more convenient time to dig. DonÂt think that just because you have a frost that you must dig on the next day. Soil temperature and storage temperature should be a major factor; the cooler the temperature the better (within reason) and definitely a few degrees above freezing. Sometimes people (particularly the pot grower) allow the plants to get bone dry and I think this is a mistake but not necessarily fatal. Excessively dry soil (storage mediums) pulls moisture from the rhizomes; soggy soils (storage mediums) will likely cause storage rot. This is particularly true for extended storage time. Remember, commercial growers must start their harvest before frost and usually complete their digging after freezing. FBG has good advice, donÂt set dates; follow your best schedule. What about going to Canadian Tire and picking up some heat tape...it also could be called heat trace? It is a long warming cord that is actually wrapped around water pipes under mobile homes to keep them from freezing in the wintertime. It looks like a funny electrical cord that has a thermostat on it and actually is fairly inexpensive. When wrapped around the waterpipes it keeps the pipes just above the freezing point but still cool. We used one in the basement of our greenhouse/potting shed for years (to do just as you would like to do) until a cold storage area was built in our basement in the house.

Mtnfever, I just checked my flour containers. I buy flour in 5# quantities as my containers won't hold 10 lbs. I can't lift 10# easily. I do buy the small bags of Bob's Red Mill specialty flours and keep those in plastic bags in the freezer. Cambro rounds-6 liters, 6 qt., use for no-knead bread dough, not flour. Easier to mix in rounds. Cheap at webstaurantstore.com. (Also parchment paper 100 sheets under 5 bucks.) When I put 5 lbs. flour in these following containers, there is enough headroom left on top, so I can put in 1/2 and 1 cup measures and comfortably scoop flour. These containers have lock n' lock lids. Sterilite, -3.8 liters, 16.2 cups Sterilite, 16c, 3.8 liters, 4 qt Rubbermaid, 15 c, 3.5 liters, taller than others I know you were hoping that Cambro would hold 10 lbs. The 8 qt. Cambro would very likely hold 10-lbs, based on my 5# containers.

Well, I think that would depend on how far in advance you want to make the jam. If you want to make several batches and put it in a jar without processing it, and you do that weekly, I'm sure it won't spoil before the week is up. Jam lasts for a couple of weeks in my fridge when I have jars that don't seal, or jars that I've opened and not consumed all of, and selling it as a fresh product rather than a preserved product might be a possibility. However, if you want to make the jam and keep it for longer periods of time, I think your option is to sell them 4 pints instead. Plus, since they are a restaurant, you might want to check on state regulations as to what you can supply them with and whether it can be prepared outside their commercial kitchen. Here in Michigan the cottage food law would let me sell jam to you, as long as it contains information on the label that it was prepared in a home kitchen which has not been inspected, and I can keep selling it to you until I make $30,000, but I can't sell it to a restaurant unless I make it in an inspected kitchen and I can't make more than $30,000 per year. Laws vary from state to state, as I'm sure you know, and selling to individuals is different than selling to restaurants. I hope you sell them a zillion dollars worth of jam! I've had your jam and it's delicious, I'm not surprised the restaurant wants lots of it. Annie

Cheap Gladware, Tupperware, plastic ziplocs, Green bags, canning jars, etc. It ain't pretty, but it works.

What Deanna said....The inside of my refrigerator is not a fashion statement!! LOL!
I also give away lots of "stuff" in those cheap Gladware containers....never expecting to get them back.....and then occasionally someone brings me 6 or 7!
I also use the old "keep it on a plate" trick....but in keeping with the new millenium I cover it with saran rather that one of those shower cap things.

Sherry, Thank you but it's just to compensate for lack of other skills.

Now, on the subject of storage containers--I think they are a conspiracy!! Just when you find the perfect containers and buy all matchy matchy, they come up with some other Lock n Lock, stack & stack, Click Clack, Klip It, Fit & Fresh, Snapware, Glass Lock, OXO Pop, Always Fresh, Vac 'n Save, Modular Mates, or the like!

Of late, I have had been using Mason jars and recycled giant pickle jars with my hand held FoodSaver; both for the refrigerator and the pantry.

I'm cracking up here LindaC!!
I have 3 shower caps on top of my fridge for the plastic bowls that don't have lids but are awesome for mixing up salads, etc., but Saran wrap doesn't stick to them very well.
