Where do I go from here?

I'm trying to figure out where I want to go after leaving a lucrative position years ago as an electrical engineer.

I have been an advocate for my son for many years and worked as a board member for the ARC for a year.

I was thinking of putting my skills toward being an RN. Given my educational background I could get a nursing degree in less than 2 yrs.

I know you all don't really know me well but we do have a history and I was wondering...do you think I'm suited??

I think if you are even thinking about it, by all means give it a whirl.
I could never ever be a nurse. lol
Is there any fields where you'd be even better suited given your advocacy experience?
Physical therapist is what I'm thinking. We have some in our school district..and I don't think they are necessarily "nurse" certified. But they work with the kids who have special physical needs that need to honed or strengthened.

I give you much credit for wanting to further your education period. That too is something I have no desire to do. I'm often asked why I don't get a teaching certificate....Well..I love being in the school and helping the kids and even teaching..but I have NO desire to do homework beside my kids. lol

How about being an advocate for students with special needs? I'm sure you're aware that many students who need special services or schools are denied by their school district. There are a few here in Los Angeles that are dynamite at getting the system to recognize the needs of these children and allow them (fund)the appropriate education and resources.
As a parent of a special needs child, I'm sure you could do it. You might need to beef up your education with some classes that would help you do some educational testing, otherwise leave that to the trained professionals and let the inner bulldog loose as you advocate for those forgotten kids!

Pull the henbit. Reduce your expectations for the lawn for this year. The time to finish putting seed down was last fall. This new grass will likely die before August from the heat and pressure from crabgrass. Then next fall hit it again with more seed. With your full sun you should strongly consider going to Kentucky bluegrass. Even the builder's grade KBG can look exceptional. KBG has the huge advantage of becoming very dense all by itself. That will keep weeds out. It has the disadvantage of going dormant in the winter.

Assuming you put in a cool season variety of grass... You're new grasslings are going to be dealing with their most stressful time of the year. Summer. If you get hot dry weather or warm humid nights you'll want to hold back on the fertilizer, scale back your watering to an inch a week and do so at the first sign of stress and mow at the higher limit of the suggested cutting range. The part that isn't growing or germinating you may need to do better at keeping it moist or the ground could be very compacted.

Hi again, I know the local Lowes can get them for you as well. If you get the 20% coupon from ebay (Lowes will take their own or competitor's coupons, like HD's), you won't pay an arm and a leg. You can order from out of state on the web, but you may pay more in shipping. It can't hurt to check into it. FWIW, I believe the SKs are taller than the Kenmores, but there is no trim kit to make them look quite as tall. The trim kit adds no storage and wastes space, so you are ahead with the SKs. As for tiny, that couldn't be further from the truth. With a combined storage space of over 35 cubic feet, I'd like to know what she is comparing them to! I also don't buy that she has ever seen them if she said they look cheap. People who have seen mine (had a huge bbq with about 50 people) were all impressed with the look as well as the size. I know it impressed me and I was pleasantly surprised because I figured I might have give up some of the look to get the function. When they were unpacked, I was delighted. I would ask her if she has seen them in person and make sure she is referring to the Sks and not the basic all fridge/ all freezer that were not designed as side by side pieces and look boxy. You can buy cheaper versions meant for the garage or basement from many mfrs. The SKs were designed to be front and center in the kitchen and to sit well next to or near each other fashion-wise. HTH

I just noticed I was replying to a very, very old post, but figured I'd leave it in case anyone is still reading. I had a bad experience with this zinsser oil based interior/exterior cover stain as well. I did not tint but it is tintable. I used it right after buying from depot and having it shaken for 5 min at the counter. I applied on an outside beam that was partially prepped with a wood hardener after removing dry rot, but the majority was just the previous paint that was in good shape. 2 days after painting, it's still slightly tacky. I called zinsser support and they said the only thing they could think of is if I had been applied on too hot of a day, saying it needs to be under 80F. It was topped out at just under 70 the day I painted, but the sun here does get hot in the South Bay below San Francisco, so maybe the surface was hotter?? I'll check today compared to air temp. If temperature wasn't the cause, then my experience seems similar to yours. In my case it would be a huge job to remove the product from the large outdoor beam so I'm looking for other solutions. I still need to add an epoxy pc woodie filler where I had removed and cleaned out dry rot before applying the cover stain (just used to make sure the pc woodie epoxy would stick and add an extra layer of protection against the weather to the entire beam...which I now wish I had skipped!) My current plan is to wait it out a week or 2 and hopefully dries (next week is supposed to be low 70's but the rest of this week is 80's. In the upper 80's the 2nd layer is even forming a few bubbles, so I've just been popping those to make sure it dries out beneath. It's only slightly tacky, but looking for no tackiness before I take the next step. If anyone has any tips or any idea if waiting longer will help, let me know please. Thanks! And for the next time, a better product to use than this zinsser oil based primer which was highly recommended by depot.

You'd be a wonderful nurse and could combine all you skills and interests for some very satisfying jobs as a nurse. They'll be waiting for you with open arms when you graduate.

I started nursing school when I was 40, and most of my classmates were also in school to start a second career, most of us already had degrees in other areas. We did very well, all of us graduated. The "youngsters" had a hard time and really struggled. We found that life experiences help a lot in nursing. My neighbor, now 40 herself, starts the nursing program at the local community college in September.

Another idea is to be a patient advocate. It's my understanding that there's a growing need/field for this career, where you make sure a patient is getting the care and attention he/she needs. I remember once when my Mom was in the hospital, her roommate had no one with her. She was all but ignored by the nurses unless I called them when it was clear she needed attention. If you are used to being an advocate, this might be an interesting career for you.

Following compumom's suggestion of special needs advocacy, there is an organization in Virginia called Parent Educational Advocacy Training Center (PEATC). I know a couple of volunteers who attend IEP meetings between parents and school administrators and just help families navigate in general. They also speak at hearings, etc. Maybe your state or county has a similar program?

I work in a middle school where we have several teacher assistants, assigned to special needs programs. You don't need a teaching certificate and you may be assigned to one student and follow that student all the way through school (or not), or to a small group of students. Many of the assistants do have education degrees and go on to become certified in spec ed.
