Disconnect Laptop Battery when on A/C?

Reading a recent issue of PC Magazine I was a bit surprised to read in an article on extending the life of laptop batteries that batteries should be disconnected when the laptop is left on a/c power for long periods of time. In my case my notebook may be on a/c for a month or more before it is taken "on the road". I have lived this way for several years and the battery in my older notebook still seems to be in good/fair shape and it is about 3 years old.

The advice was to remove the battery only after turning the laptop off. I may give it a try on my new notebook which is about 3 months old, so that battery is still relatively new.

The article also warns about running the battery into a deep discharge, unlike the past recommendation for NiCad batteries. The good news was that most computes and Windows 7 will normally shut the computer down before the battery can be discharged too far.
