Finding passwords on Windows 7 etc

I have the book Windows 7 Step by Step, looked into that, researched on the computer but am frustrated. I have outlook Express and when I go to a site and reply "it" do you want to save this password? Sometimes I say yes, but where do I go to see what passwords I have saved? Also I have been updating XMarks and that program is suggesting installing Passwords or something similar. Is that safe and do I need to pay for it---meaning is it worth it? What other programs are available that are easy to use.

It saves your passwords for that site in the memory of the computer and should enter when you go to the login box for that site. As far as I know there is no record to look at that lists all your saved passwords.

Go to tools, options and security. The option to save passwords or not is there. click on "saved passwords" if you want to see what is saved. I do not save mine, if my computer was stolen they could get into everything.

When you speak of upgrading "my Dell computer", you're not speaking of installing an upgrade over top of XP are you? If so, I misunderstand, so disregard the rest of my post. :) So I'm assuming you intend to purchase a retail version of Windows 7 and do a clean install. In the first line of your post you mention 512 MB of RAM, a date, and then 2.00 GB of RAM. Does that mean it now has 2.00 GB of RAM or maybe 2 1/2 GB of RAM? Either way, I'm no expert but I'd think 512 MB is less than enough, but either 2 or 2 1/2 GB would be fine. I don't know much about Office, but wasn't Office 2003 was the last version that had the old style menu, before the newfangled ribbon came along. According to this, your Office 2002 would not be compatible but according to this, Office 2003 would be. Would your 2002 macros work in 2003? I don't know. Would it be worth the expense of buying a retail version of Windows 7, as well as Office 2003(or at least Word)? To me, probably not, to you, only you can decide. Personally, since it works, I'd probably just continue using it. Continue running a good real-time AV, occasionally scanning with a couple on-demand malware tools(Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware come to mind), use Firefox or Chrome(lie detected), using the WOT add-on(trusting it somewhat less than fully), and being careful what I open(email) and what I install. Remember that if you are using Windows Backup in Windows 7, you should not be using a backup medium smaller than 1GB. CDs are no longer appropriate; you should purchase blank DVDs and write on those. This has nothing to do with Gateway, it has to do with the increased size of a backup. Memorex is also a media that will give you a great deal of 'coasters' (useless burned DVDs/CDs). When that happens it is saved into your browser and yes it can be accessed by anyone with access to the pc. I have a very nice notebook with plastic cover that is strictly for login details including passwords. You should have some thing other than a scrap of papers. Over time as you sign up for various sites you have a pile of papers. I don't put passwords in any program and don't use a password keeper. I have a copy saved on a flash drive, the notebook that is in a locked location. If someone makes it into my house, kills me and my husband, manages to steal my computers and also finds and steals the notebook too they can have it! I tape the router and wifi information on the bottom of the router.

Without stepping on anyone's toes, could I join the needing help with this issue? If this should be a separate thread, please tell me... Approx 2 months, same problem with IE9. I know there had been an update a few days before I noticed the problem but thought I'd used the browser for same tasks for a few days after that. For the last few (8 or more) weeks, I have to type my username into Ebay sign in when I didn't before, and I can't leave or view feedback there with IE9 any longer. Shop, buy, pay - all fine. My bank, all else has been OK except GW....I can't log into GW either and Tamara hasn't been able to assist. I'm having to change browsers and use Firefox for the forums, and to leave feedback on Ebay...just those two places. Workable but annoying. Windows 7. I didn't intentionally change any settings or do anything where I could have unintentionally changed them that I'm aware of, and I do use CCleaner regularly, no big cookie stashes. I've moved Ebay cookies and GW cookies to the delete side of the CCleaner options, moved them back to the 'saves'...no difference.

I do not pay for anything, because most everything you need or should have is available for free online. XMarks is an add on for your browser and not needed. Plus be careful with Free add ons many come with problems or more add ons.

I don't pay for anything either. I've never had a problem with FF ad ons. Wot has quit working for me, but I don't think of that as a problem. It has quit working for a lot of people.

Marie, if you're just looking to view passwords stored by "installed" email clients (such as Outlook Express), perhaps this would work?

Mail PassView by NirSoft

I don't know if it would fit your needs or not. Just offering it as something to consider. I have no experience with it.

EmmaR--curious! I am using FireFox primarily and when I go to tools, I don't have option--security, only Internet Security Where else could I look?

Maybe I was wrong about what I posted. Everyone is talking about email, I thought she just meant on her computer.

When you open FF browser you don't see Tools on the menu bar? File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Tools and Help? Under Tools I have a menu with Options, General is where you set your homepage, to the right are tabs, content, etc..

Maybe she has that tool bar disabled in FF. If you right click a blank spot on the top of the FF tool bar then click menu bar that will bring it up.

How does the poster have outlook express on widnows 7? Mary

I was wondering the same thing, Mary. Windows 7 does not allow Outlook Express.

I googled and in a round about way it can be done I guess using virtual something or other that runs an xp environment on 7 thus letting the user run OE but it was greek to me so I have no clue how to actually do it or if it works. I don't understand what OE has to do with website passwords but I never used it to know. Mary

Sorry about the confusion. My email may be Microsoft Outlook--anyway, that is what shows up in the upper right hand corner. I just assumed it was the same as I had with XP. Not sure what to call it as it is the same as my phone company--if that makes sense.Will have to do some research to find out exactly what I have--or at least the correct name.

MS outlook is an email program. Your email provider would be @aol.com, Verizon.com, yahoo.com or who ever you use for email and you access it through the MS outlook program.
