I've been using this one for several months and have been satisfied with it.

Stay away from the obscure, "never heard of it before" brands, and you'll find the rest are pretty comparable. They work, they come with a guarantee, they'll last a good while. Differences between models and mainline brands are hard to discern, besides size and price.

I'd suggest you decide what size you want, and then shop by price.

I've been looking and checking the ads and I just bought the same one as Bob414 yesterday. I knew it was a good brand, and it is on sale for $89. at both Best Buy and Staples this week.

I like all the extra room on the desk and I'm getting used to the wide screen, but text is not nearly as clear (easy on the eyes) as the old CRT. Bought it because I thought it might be better. I'll see if there is any tweeking I can do.

Bottom line--yes, I like it. My eyes have just been a problem lately.

Unlike you're old CRT monitor, LCD monitors have a native resolution that shouldn't be changed. Are you sure your video settings are correct for the new monitor? Check the owners manual for the correct settings.

Wow $89 for a 20 inch LCD monitor, you can't beat that for sure.

I have owned 2 Acers for over 3 years now, a 20 inch 16 x 9 and a 19 inch 5 x 4 plus my main screen is a Samsung 22 inch. All have done me proud.

I have an ACER monitor also and have really liked it. there are some great deals on monitors right now especially ones that are manufacturer refurbished, I was looking at a 27" samsung last night for $199.

Definitely make sure you check the manual for what you need to set your pc to for the proper resolution settings. Also if you have a problem seeing the text you can go into advanced settings in display and adjust the DPI settings to a larger size.

Be careful before buying a monitor that's significantly larger than the one you're accustomed to.

Bigger isn't always better. There's more light shining in your face when you use a bigger monitor. Most people sit rather close to them, much closer than to a TV screen, and many find the large sizes to be quite uncomfortable to use for more than just a few minutes. Think of old movies, the caricature police interrogation takes place with the suspect sitting with bright lights shining in his face. For a reason, it's uncomfortable!

Also, unless you have poor eyesight, the resulting enlarged type be fatiguing to read.

I got a 23" Acer wide lcd, fired it up, took one look, took my 2-15" CRT's (ugh) to the Dump. Same day. :-)

You know, snidley, you're absolutely right. I had already brought the screen down to a comfortable size for reading these forums(about the size of old crt), but the whole screen was still glaring and it really was uncomfortable. Now I've adjusted it so that the right 4" of screen shows my desktop picture which is much easier on the eyes. Great observation. Thanks.

If anyone knows how to dim or tint the regular background (like it is on the conversations side) I'd sure like to know--hoping there might just be a setting.

Sandy are you referring to the background on these forums?
If so, if you use firefox get the NoSquint extension. After you've installed it in firefox right click on one of the forum pages and select 'No Squint Site Settings' on the drop down menu. In the Text and Backgrounds section click on the rectangle after background. You will get a pop up screen which will allow you to select the background color you want. There are other settings you might want to check out. They stay, you don't have to change them each time you visit the site, but you can reverse them any time you want to.

Breenthumb it sounds like you are changing the resolution settings, thats not a good idea with this type of monitor, it needs to be set for the size of monitor. I provided a link above with a chart that lists the proper resolution per size. I would set it according to that and other changes could possibly help if you still need adjustments. Usually after a few days of getting used to the new look and changes you find you like it.
I have severe eyesight problems, am legally blind with out corrective lenses, and I did have a bit of an adjustment period, but adjusting the dpi settings really helped.

I use two 22" Acers, mounted together. I bought them from Newegg.com a couple of years ago. Very satisfactory!

This monitor set itself. No matter what, it goes back to its own setting which is just fine by me. All I do is click the maximize button (up in the top right) on and off. On it uses the whole screen (nice for video, etc.)and off I have set where its comfortable for reading. Did that with the double sided arrow on the edge. And my desktop screen is on the right when I do that.

It did take a couple of days to adjust. And the tweeking I was going to do was just maybe finding a better font. Thanks

If you want to select a different font with firefox click tools > options > content. I've been using Verdana for years and really like it. I have the size set at 18 but could go with smaller now that I've had cataract surgery. If that's not the font you want to tweak let us know and maybe someone can help.

breenthumb to make sure it is set where it should be just check out this link it tells you and shows pictures of exactly how to check what resolution it is set at and how to change it. They sometimes do not automatically choose the proper setting so always best to double check.

Also in some cases if it is an older pc with an older video card you may have to go to the site for that and get the latest drivers for these newer LCD monitors so keep that in mind.
