Yes, go to openoffice.org It will interwork with MS Office applications Word, Powerpoint and Excel Some glitches with MS applications in my experience, but works well.

Question about Open Office Program

I've used the text and spreadsheet applications and they work pretty darn well given the price. The only thing you need to remember is that Open Office is not 100% compatible with Microsoft Office. If you are in a business environment were the office uses Office, then you need Office.

you do not want a tablet for that type of use. Stick with a laptop, for travel of course the 14-15 inch will be lighter weight, check the weights on any of them because they can vary greatly. I have only got warranties from the manufacturer. Once you have one you will want to declutter it, using the pc decrapifier is a good tool to help you with that. I never activate the "free" antivirus on them either I immediately fully remove it and install either AVAST free or Microsoft Security Essentials free. We can help you with all of that when you get it just come on back and ask. Here are a couple of links you can save. PC Decrapifier. Using AppRemover to remove the AV that is on it. a good place to get the things you need free with out any extras added on. Here is a link that might be useful: ninite

Works is the only word processor I have ever worked with, other than a couple of times on DH's computer. At least I am slightly familiar with it. Works won't let me change to a RTF or a txt. DH tried that. The old system is XP about 5 yrs old. It came on that computer, no seperate disc to install it. This new one is Windows 7. I have almost everything changed over using Office 2003 that I installed on the old computer to make the changes. Now I have to decide if I'm going to fight with figuring out how to make everything open in Open Office, or if I'm going to go buy Office Home & Student.I have a few files, like our trip journals that I have inserted photos into, and it doesn't want to copy and paste into Word, so I haven't decided what I'm going to do about that. Dad has a collection of antique gas hit and miss engines that I made an inventory of with all the serial numbers that we could read. He has a printed copy and I have the computer copy. It won't c & p that either, so I will put that on a flash drive and DH will print that off at work, so we at least have 2 hard copies. That's about 30 pages in color! I may try coping and pasting a page at a time instead of the whole document, but I've had enough sitting by the freezing cold window working on it for 2 days! I am learning to like sitting in my recliner with the computer in my lap in the winter! I guess with the flu in the house and my DB's accident yesterday, and my frustrations with the computer, I am just in a grumbling mood! So thanks for putting up with me! Tami

"You know I started out in this room being very organized, but as time goes along and things accumulate, it kept getting harder to stay with the orginal systems." boy, is this true! For one thing, no system, however perfect, is maintenance free. For another, the stuff you decide you don't need anymore doesn't get up and leave by itself! it just stays in there, out of sight and out of mind, both at the same time. And of course, your needs change, so a system itself may end up outmoded. Congrats on starting the effort, and good luck! I needed to file the quarterly statement from the kids' savings accounts, and went through all those file and got about 4 inches of papers out--all the quarterly statements from years past that I got to lazy to pitch when the new ones came. I need to start enforcing the "one in, one out" rule: when the new quarterly statement comes, I toss the oldest one. And in order to do that, I'm going to take the start-up paperwork (which I want to keep always) and fold it in half (printing side out, so I can tell what it is) and put it in the front of the file. Then, that paperwork will be *shorter,* and I can simply put the new paper in the back, and grab the first *tall* paper from the front to toss.

Besides Open Office it is possible to find Wordperfect for a mere fraction of MS Office. I bought version 8 a couple of years ago for $8 and yes, it was a sealed and genuine copy.

OpenOffice is probably the most well known. Another option is StarOffice. StarOffice is the parent of OpenOffice and contains some proprietary code. The two products share the same code base, but StarOffice adds some third party technologies.

I haven't used eitehr very much recently, but in the past, StarOffice did a better job of converting MS Office files. If you use databases, StarOffice includes a licensed database, but OpenOffice does not.

I've used both extensively in the past, but haven't used either very much recently. I think I'd be inclined to use StarOffice now.

StarOffice is available for free as part of the Google pack.

Another free Office suite is IBM's Lotus Symphony. I don't know much about this one.

I know that OpenOffice and StarOffice can open MS Office password protected files that use older password protection, but can't open the newer types. Lotus Symphony can't open the newer types, but I don't know about the older ones.

another alternative is to use the various online web applications office programs which you do not install on your pc you simply use them from online, such as the google apps, google docs, etc there are many new online office apps available just do a search for them.

I have and use open office on my linux machines works great.

to find google apps go to google then click on more and more again.
