Wish Microsoft would quit changing things

I have all my old word documents saved as a .wps file. Doesn't work on the new computer, can't just copy and paste into a new doc in Open Office either. Sooooo, I've spent the last two days freezing on the old computer copy and pasting into an old office program of DH's that will run on it but not this new one. I can't move it away from the window because of the external monitor it has to be connected to. It's cold! I finally had to quit last night because of it. You don't want to touch that arm and hand right now! LOL! My biggest problem is it doesn't want to copy and paste any my trip journals with pictures inserted into them, or any inventories that have pics in them. If it takes them it takes forever to do it, which is why I am back playing on here again. I think I have all the rest of the stuff changed over. It's all copied to a flash drive to move over here when I'm done. And I'll have to take all the others off, I guess, so they don't take up all that room. And updated drivers arent available for the scanner, either. It's fun to get a new computer, but sure is frustrating, too. If they have to change things, at least they could make them compatable with the older programs. I spent all day Sat. working with the Comp Help forum trying to do this and didn't get anywhere.

Did you try using a converter?

>WPS documents are from Works word processor. They've never been compatible with Word. Works was the el-cheapo package that imitated what Office, SmartSuite and similar packages would do. I never liked Works for the reason it was so proprietary.

I don't recall whether Works will let you save in rich text or not. (.RTF format) If so, Word would open that, as would most any other program.

Other option, how old is the Works program you have and how new is your system? Will it load on your new computer for accessing the stuff?

I've only had two issues with my greenhouse so far. My door keeps freezing shut (I really need to add a door handle!) I built it too close and it's in range of the neighbor's kid and his friends driving golf balls into the woods. I really should have put two and two together when i found a couple of balls in the grass near the greenhouse. I didn't think a golf ball would go through poly after 500 feet. Here in z5... spinnach does the best. I did pick one crop in early JAnuary but the temps have plumetted again so neaqrly everything has stopped growing (Unheated). Lettuce also grows well when it's growing. Same with beets. Peas survive, but when they stop growing they tend to rot their stems. I think once the temps rise again they will send out new shoots and i will be golden. There have been a couple of things that didn't do too well under my double poly... cole crops for one. Seems they really need the light. Three plants gives me the output of 1 in the sun. My goal for 2011 is to add insulation between my two layers ala "Solaroof" design using soap bubbles. I hope to add another zone to my season using that.

THINGS I'M GLAD WE DID We planned for the future and ran PVC pipe underneath all our concrete walks and drives so landscape lighting could be added later. Also ran pipe for electric wires out to the backyard where we would be building our barn the next year so we wouldn't have to dig up the yard again. Wired for an entertainment system in the basement (which we are finishing now -- 2 yrs. after move-in). DH insited on 400 amp service so we would have plenty of electrical for pool, barn etc. Splurged on the kitchen cabinets and appliances. It's one of our favorite rooms and is large enough for both of us to cook at the same time. Makes cooking & cleanup easy and enjoyable. Insisted on a pool bath with a separate entrance into the home. We fired our first designer when he insisted it was a waste of space in our northern home and would present a security risk because it makes another entrance to the home. It's great not to have guests walk across our wood floor when coming in from the pool to use the restroom. It's also a great changing room for the pool and hot tub and the shower is a great place to wash the doggie. Lots of very large windows to view the beautiful landscape and wildlife from everywhere in the home. What a way to increase the endorphins during an upper midwest winter. We used to live in a house where we could barely see outside. Our coffee area in the MB suite. We saw this in a parade home and had our second (and final) architect plan for this. It consists of some cabinetry, a small refrigerator and a bar sink -- perfect for making coffee in the morning or storing juice and sodas. It's located outside the bedroom, bathroom and closet area but still inside the suite area. Planned for a single, very large MB closet. It's 10 x 15 and is a perfect size for storing all our clothes and is also a roomy changing room. A covered lanai in the back of the house to escape the summer heat but enjoy the rainstorms. Our hardwood floor (Brazilian Teak) throughout the house. One of the biggest "wow" factors to people visiting. THINGS I WISH WE HAD DONE DIFFERENTLY Mostly small size changes which you wouldn't understand unless you were inside the house. A couple of feet here and there to make a room slightly larger. We actually cut those feet off the original plan to keep it just under 4000 sq.ft. Boy, I wish we had kept them. Really checked our cabinet layout. Our laundry room has a tight area when using the fold-down ironing board. It's mainly because we chose a front loading washer & dryer which are deeper than traditional machines. Try to visualize the cabinets and how they work in the room.

Between 3 and 6 months you should begin to notice little (at first) tiny improvements. It's really hard to work with a 3 month old because they are still on survival autopilot and will do what they need to do, as driven by their brains and development. They don't yet communicate 'normally' in a 2-way sense so it's really hard to work with them. If there is a part of the pattern that leaves her screaming when you can reasonably know she's not 'too' anything and she is safe, then you can try soothing her without touch (she may still need your touch though, so use your best judgement and experiment). You can probably soothe her with your voice, singing, humming, and things like that. The 'trick' is to get her attention with that soothing thing that reinforces for her that you are present/near _before_ she is worked up to the point of panic or screaming (at that point, touch will probably soothe her most effectively and quickly). Use the vocal soothing as if by reflex, and it might help buy you some time and help her to cope while she's all freaked out because of change or the pacifier gone or whatever it is she thinks/feels. 2 hours later for bedtime maybe? (you could try adjusting times bit-wise by about 15-30 minutes at a time and staying at each step for 5-7 days to see if there is any change). when you need a pep talk, look at her at that 4am waking; smiling, it's quiet out and there's just you for her and life is probably very good for her at those times and when she is shattered by imposed unanticipated change (the noticed absence of the pacifier), she can trust that you can make things right and good again P.S. Is there a baby-safe way you can secure the pacifier (or a pacifier) to her sleeping clothes, or bed? It might be possible (don't count on instant results) to kind of teach her how she can find her own pacifier. (She might have initial trouble finding her mouth with it, or with letting go at the right time though... by 6 months odds will improve that she can manage this task on her own).

There were actually several things that we wound up doing before our full remodel...and I'm so glad we did. We moved into a house that had a 1970's kitchen (complete with an avocado stove and non-vented hood). We planned on a kitchen remodel within 2 years of getting into the house. It wound up that it's been a little over 3. We picked up a Craigslist range and got rid of the old one. I don't love the Craigslist range, but it was light-years better than the original. This range is now in our basement hooked up to help us get through our remodel. And it will remain afterward for when I can since I'm getting an induction cooktop for upstairs. We put in a dishwasher. This single thing was the most important thing that we could have done to make the house livable through a terrible kitchen. We are reusing the DW in the new kitchen. We did a bit of rewiring which was completely necessary - so of this will be able to be reused in the new kitchen. Some of it won't. But, the fact that we weren't blowing a circuit every time we used the fridge and the microwave means that it was worth it! I had a rolling cart from our previous house and that was a lifesaver in the current kitchen...the rolling cart is now in our living room serving as a place for the microwave, a few dishes and utensils, and so on to live as a "temporary kitchenette" while our remodel goes on. The cart will go away after we are finished with our renovation...it's a little bittersweet to see it go - it's been such a help through a terrible rental kitchen and another terrible kitchen in the house we bought. But, the few hundred dollars I spent for it has been completely worthwhile.

Or try saving as a .txt (text document) but it will remove all of your formatting- at least you would not have to retype.

Works is the only word processor I have ever worked with, other than a couple of times on DH's computer. At least I am slightly familiar with it. Works won't let me change to a RTF or a txt. DH tried that. The old system is XP about 5 yrs old. It came on that computer, no seperate disc to install it. This new one is Windows 7. I have almost everything changed over using Office 2003 that I installed on the old computer to make the changes. Now I have to decide if I'm going to fight with figuring out how to make everything open in Open Office, or if I'm going to go buy Office Home & Student.I have a few files, like our trip journals that I have inserted photos into, and it doesn't want to copy and paste into Word, so I haven't decided what I'm going to do about that. Dad has a collection of antique gas hit and miss engines that I made an inventory of with all the serial numbers that we could read. He has a printed copy and I have the computer copy. It won't c & p that either, so I will put that on a flash drive and DH will print that off at work, so we at least have 2 hard copies. That's about 30 pages in color! I may try coping and pasting a page at a time instead of the whole document, but I've had enough sitting by the freezing cold window working on it for 2 days! I am learning to like sitting in my recliner with the computer in my lap in the winter!

I guess with the flu in the house and my DB's accident yesterday, and my frustrations with the computer, I am just in a grumbling mood! So thanks for putting up with me!

On some of my works files I've brought them up as is and then copied and pasted into a WORD Document and saved them that way to WORD a HINT After you copy them
Open a blank Word Document
on your WORD Top info
hit EDIT
then Paste special
then unformatted text then hit ok and your copy should paste into word as if it was typed in word already.
hope you can understand this
after I learned this last year it has been a breeze copying thing from the web and other places without having to go back and change a lot of fonts etc . Hope this helps

I just wish they would make one computer that would be compatible for games, programs etc. I know why they do what they do...almighty dollar. I started out with an XP and I loved, loved it. It died then we got a HP that ran Vista. It died. (but we might have been ripped off to buy a new computer as we only had it a 2 years) I hated Vista!!! My son, when he visited us at Christmas took our computer back with him and said if it was able to be fixed he would. Said it was unusual for HP to just last 2 years(have not heard from him) Now we have a Dell that runs Windows 7. No, nothing is compatible with the other. But, we are not quite as computer savvy as my son. But gosh, he lives over 500 miles away. It is hard to explain things on the phone, and when he does someway my and my husbands memory does not retain the info. I guess we need more memory. LOL!!

I recently bought a Windows 7 computer and there was no word processor at all on the PC. I looked everywhere for works, but it has been phased out. I bought MS Office and word converted my Works documents to word, but it would not convert my data base documents which is where I listed my movies, books and jig saw puzzles. I have had W 98, ME and XP, W7 is the biggest change of all those systems. I have solved a lot of problems like the bright white screens and adjusted my attitude with other differences that could not be changed. I'm lucky, I like learning new technology so it was not so frustrating for me. I solved most of the problems by Googling.
