Wish Microsoft would quit changing things

I have all my old word documents saved as a .wps file. Doesn't work on the new computer, can't just copy and paste into a new doc in Open Office either. Sooooo, I've spent the last two days freezing on the old computer copy and pasting into an old office program of DH's that will run on it but not this new one. I can't move it away from the window because of the external monitor it has to be connected to. It's cold! I finally had to quit last night because of it. You don't want to touch that arm and hand right now! LOL! My biggest problem is it doesn't want to copy and paste any my trip journals with pictures inserted into them, or any inventories that have pics in them. If it takes them it takes forever to do it, which is why I am back playing on here again. I think I have all the rest of the stuff changed over. It's all copied to a flash drive to move over here when I'm done. And I'll have to take all the others off, I guess, so they don't take up all that room. And updated drivers arent available for the scanner, either. It's fun to get a new computer, but sure is frustrating, too. If they have to change things, at least they could make them compatable with the older programs. I spent all day Sat. working with the Comp Help forum trying to do this and didn't get anywhere.

Did you try using a converter?

>WPS documents are from Works word processor. They've never been compatible with Word. Works was the el-cheapo package that imitated what Office, SmartSuite and similar packages would do. I never liked Works for the reason it was so proprietary.

I don't recall whether Works will let you save in rich text or not. (.RTF format) If so, Word would open that, as would most any other program.

Other option, how old is the Works program you have and how new is your system? Will it load on your new computer for accessing the stuff?

Well said Junior. As I, and others have said on this forum: NEVER ASSUME ANYTHING! OVER COMMUNICATE!! We are building our third custom home, and each architect is different, each builder is different, and each sub is different. Even with this home, there are so many things I would do different. I have given our builder lots and lots of pictures. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. He has quite a file on us. We also made a personal binder that contains notes from our meetings with the builder and subs, every bid, every selection, all plans, interior and exterior elevations, etc It's been my bible throughout this process. So far we have been fortunate that our builder has not charged us anything to move a couple windows, move the speaker locations, and a couple other minor changes. He's been absolutely terrific throughout the entire process. Even when we changed the size of baseboards, there was no change order. And he has gone out of his way to make sure he gets good pricing on materials. I personally have purchased most "allowance" items and paid for them as we go. Huge savings.

Surprised no one has mentioned, but even in SoCal, I love my Warm Floors in the bathroom under the travertine - could be my favorite thing! During the winter, I wanted to lie down on my bathroom floor. Glad I held out for an outside spiral staircase to the upstairs deck, two-sided office desk, pot filler, upstairs laundry, pool bath, undercounter micro drawer, trash compactor (everyone tried to talk me out of that & said they were passe'), recycling bin, fixed & handheld shower (overhead shower was a bit of a waste...), doggie door hidden under kitchen desk - people think she's magic when she appears :), pull-out shelves for printers, etc in office & grommets for wires & got rid of most of the clutter, LOVE the light system & setting up scenes - esp. our 'night track' button that saves me turning on & off 6 banks of lights just to get down to the kitchen at night, my daughter's 'all-off' button that blinks until she turns all the lights off @ night Bain-Ultra air bath - no more gross jacuzzi jets shooting out gunk! Wish I had closet lights that come on when doors are opened, had organized the pantry lay-out a little better, figured out drawers/pull-outs for wrapping paper better, looked more closely at cabinet depths - can't fit a whole lot in, perhaps put an elevator in - was $10K in the beginning & just heard a woman is paying $70K to retrofit her house for one. I need the exercise now, but who knows what the future will hold... not a whole lot more than that though - we thought it out pretty throughly. STUPIDEST purchase ever - the Aquatics laundry air sink - basically a jacuzzi for my underwear that you can't even use soap in as it bubbles over & makes a mess. You can do a better job swishing your hand around in the sink a couple of times. Whatever possessed me to get this, I don't know... Almost Done!!

THINGS I'M GLAD WE DID We planned for the future and ran PVC pipe underneath all our concrete walks and drives so landscape lighting could be added later. Also ran pipe for electric wires out to the backyard where we would be building our barn the next year so we wouldn't have to dig up the yard again. Wired for an entertainment system in the basement (which we are finishing now -- 2 yrs. after move-in). DH insited on 400 amp service so we would have plenty of electrical for pool, barn etc. Splurged on the kitchen cabinets and appliances. It's one of our favorite rooms and is large enough for both of us to cook at the same time. Makes cooking & cleanup easy and enjoyable. Insisted on a pool bath with a separate entrance into the home. We fired our first designer when he insisted it was a waste of space in our northern home and would present a security risk because it makes another entrance to the home. It's great not to have guests walk across our wood floor when coming in from the pool to use the restroom. It's also a great changing room for the pool and hot tub and the shower is a great place to wash the doggie. Lots of very large windows to view the beautiful landscape and wildlife from everywhere in the home. What a way to increase the endorphins during an upper midwest winter. We used to live in a house where we could barely see outside. Our coffee area in the MB suite. We saw this in a parade home and had our second (and final) architect plan for this. It consists of some cabinetry, a small refrigerator and a bar sink -- perfect for making coffee in the morning or storing juice and sodas. It's located outside the bedroom, bathroom and closet area but still inside the suite area. Planned for a single, very large MB closet. It's 10 x 15 and is a perfect size for storing all our clothes and is also a roomy changing room. A covered lanai in the back of the house to escape the summer heat but enjoy the rainstorms. Our hardwood floor (Brazilian Teak) throughout the house. One of the biggest "wow" factors to people visiting. THINGS I WISH WE HAD DONE DIFFERENTLY Mostly small size changes which you wouldn't understand unless you were inside the house. A couple of feet here and there to make a room slightly larger. We actually cut those feet off the original plan to keep it just under 4000 sq.ft. Boy, I wish we had kept them. Really checked our cabinet layout. Our laundry room has a tight area when using the fold-down ironing board. It's mainly because we chose a front loading washer & dryer which are deeper than traditional machines. Try to visualize the cabinets and how they work in the room.

Thanks! Good words of advice. halfdecaf - I love that you repeat your vows on your anniversary. That sounds like a very worthwhile tradition and one I might copy for us. I know the "good cop/bad cop" role is pretty tricky. It's not really how we intended it, but it's how I feel usually. My BF's own father abandoned the family when BF was at a very young age and his mother essentially detached from the family as a result of her husband leaving. As such, BF had no healthy parenting images to look up to so he leans toward parenting out of guilt or giving in too much to his own son. I come from a fairly strict, but caring, family so I've tried to share my own parenting examples with them. The result is that BF's son now has a normal bedtime (when we met he would let his son stay up until midnight! And he was 5!), he cleans up his own plate after dinner, he's not allowed to throw things or act physically in anger, he's not allowed to hit his dad or be disrespectful to us without consequences, etc. So I feel like the "bad cop" because I implement/encourage a lot of the discipline and a lot of the rules about what's acceptable and what's not. The only reason it's working is b/c BF currently backs me up on the decisions and is actually a little grateful that I know a little more than he does about general parenting, while he knows more than I do about his son's specific needs. So I think we make a good team. Of course, if either one of us ever stops supporting the other, I can see how that might cause some mutiny... We are also considering premarital couseling. One of my biggest challenges is learning to bite my tongue and not constantly tell him what to do. I was single for too long and have lots of rules in my own head about the way things "should" be done. On the flip side, he was single too long with a young son - essentially living the bachelor life with a kid tagging along (have you seen the Adam Sandler movie, Big Daddy - something along those lines, but not as extreme). So figuring out when my comments cross over into "nagging" seems to be a fine line. I never want to be the "nagging" wife.

Or try saving as a .txt (text document) but it will remove all of your formatting- at least you would not have to retype.

Works is the only word processor I have ever worked with, other than a couple of times on DH's computer. At least I am slightly familiar with it. Works won't let me change to a RTF or a txt. DH tried that. The old system is XP about 5 yrs old. It came on that computer, no seperate disc to install it. This new one is Windows 7. I have almost everything changed over using Office 2003 that I installed on the old computer to make the changes. Now I have to decide if I'm going to fight with figuring out how to make everything open in Open Office, or if I'm going to go buy Office Home & Student.I have a few files, like our trip journals that I have inserted photos into, and it doesn't want to copy and paste into Word, so I haven't decided what I'm going to do about that. Dad has a collection of antique gas hit and miss engines that I made an inventory of with all the serial numbers that we could read. He has a printed copy and I have the computer copy. It won't c & p that either, so I will put that on a flash drive and DH will print that off at work, so we at least have 2 hard copies. That's about 30 pages in color! I may try coping and pasting a page at a time instead of the whole document, but I've had enough sitting by the freezing cold window working on it for 2 days! I am learning to like sitting in my recliner with the computer in my lap in the winter!

I guess with the flu in the house and my DB's accident yesterday, and my frustrations with the computer, I am just in a grumbling mood! So thanks for putting up with me!

On some of my works files I've brought them up as is and then copied and pasted into a WORD Document and saved them that way to WORD a HINT After you copy them
Open a blank Word Document
on your WORD Top info
hit EDIT
then Paste special
then unformatted text then hit ok and your copy should paste into word as if it was typed in word already.
hope you can understand this
after I learned this last year it has been a breeze copying thing from the web and other places without having to go back and change a lot of fonts etc . Hope this helps

I just wish they would make one computer that would be compatible for games, programs etc. I know why they do what they do...almighty dollar. I started out with an XP and I loved, loved it. It died then we got a HP that ran Vista. It died. (but we might have been ripped off to buy a new computer as we only had it a 2 years) I hated Vista!!! My son, when he visited us at Christmas took our computer back with him and said if it was able to be fixed he would. Said it was unusual for HP to just last 2 years(have not heard from him) Now we have a Dell that runs Windows 7. No, nothing is compatible with the other. But, we are not quite as computer savvy as my son. But gosh, he lives over 500 miles away. It is hard to explain things on the phone, and when he does someway my and my husbands memory does not retain the info. I guess we need more memory. LOL!!

I recently bought a Windows 7 computer and there was no word processor at all on the PC. I looked everywhere for works, but it has been phased out. I bought MS Office and word converted my Works documents to word, but it would not convert my data base documents which is where I listed my movies, books and jig saw puzzles. I have had W 98, ME and XP, W7 is the biggest change of all those systems. I have solved a lot of problems like the bright white screens and adjusted my attitude with other differences that could not be changed. I'm lucky, I like learning new technology so it was not so frustrating for me. I solved most of the problems by Googling.
