Free program to replace MSWord

My friend bought a Dell computer which does not come with MSWord. It has MSWorks but MSWord is preferred.

Is there a free DL of a program just like Word?

Open Office will do the trick Urlee but it is a 90 plus megabyte download.

owbist, that is information that is helpful to me, too. I am the editor of a small newsletter and a lot of stuff sent to me is in Word. As Urlee said, Dell does not provide Word. I got Word Perfect 10 and it absolutely will not accept anything in Word. I have already downloaded Open Office a few months ago but, as you should know by now, I am not the most literate person on computers, how do I use Open Office for Word documents in a Word Perfect 10 program? I hope you can understand what I'm saying.

Not familiar with Photoscape, but a key ingredient of Picasa is the ability to mix photo printing so as to make better use of ink and paper with less waste. I also like the collage feature for creating desktop backgrounds of the grandchildren. I even printed one out for my desk at work. I use Irfanview for its easy resizing, properties not physical, of a photo. Being on an antique DUN that's important. DA

one of the main reasons I use firefox is because of xmarks add on which backs up all the bookmarks to an online access and if your system goes kaput you can always just access your xmarks online and when you have firefox back up just get all your bookmarks right back using xmarks. Plus since I am just freaky about it I also back up all my bookmarks to about 4 other locations too LOL good luck shax! you might want to think about an imaging program to just image that hard drive! 8 free software to image/backup/ghost your computer (free alternatives to Acronis True Image, Norton Ghost, etc.).

you can learn a lot by simply googling blower door test. in a nutshell blower door testing is a testing method that puts the house into a negative pressure. while depressurized the leaks in the house suck in air. gages measure amount of leakage at a set pressure. duct testing is done by sealing off supply registers & depressurizing duct system through the return. leaks suck air in, gages measure leakage amount. pressure pans are also used to test duct leakage, I perfer a flow hood...but it isn't an approved method. testing ducts these ways tests ALL duct no matter where they are located. with two systems, two tests are conducted one per system. we test, you seal. hire someone to seal or perhaps the rater you have test has recommendations or can do the work themselves. testing is done at 50 pascals (unit of measure) & leakage is measured in cfm (cubic feet per minute). I think in other states they test ducts @ 25 pa..but we use 50 pa. here in my part of the country we put equipment & ducts into attics, no basements. so our duct loss is a huge issue. duct leakage in basements...from what I read not all ducts in basements are sealed or insulated...which just seems crazy to me...knowing how much hard pipe ducting leaks! with duct losses minimized there is more pressure to push the air to other areas. so if the duct loss is 25% or higher, sealing ducts may put more air to second floor. attics are the greatest heat loss. so sealing at the ceiling plane to create an air barrier between living & attic is a good investment. we cut holes for recessed lights & put in unsealed IC rated cans rather than ICAT, oversize cuts in ceilings for bath fans, stove vents etc. sealing the openings, then insulating is key. adding insulation over an opening into the conditoned space de-rates performance of insulation & allows entry of insulation into living space. as for air sealing in basements..you'd have to get info from someone who works in areas with basements. you never know all the leakage areas until you test, as each house is different. about second floors...do any of the second floor walls share walls with attic space? it is often the heat/cold gain from attics into these rooms that make them so difficult to condition. if this is the case...are these walls insulated on the attic side? we often insulate these walls & use foam/foil sheathing to air seal them. a diy project for sure. a more expensive, but much faster & less labor intensive is to foam seal either the roofline, or at minimum the walls of these upstairs rooms. like with the sheathing, the foam has to cover walls from top plate to bottom plate, and between floors. best of luck.

Well, I'm currently watching two shows - Castle and Game of Thrones. Castle's a light series, but Game of Thrones is very intriguing so far. It feels like a mix of ROME and LotR, with more political backstabbing than either one. The politicking between the characters and different houses is definitely a staying factor for me. The level of detail that went into the opening sequence is amazing. The actors' names have their characters' house sigils next to them. On the map, each house's stronghold cities have the house symbols on buildings. Also, the wooden bar carvings throughout the opening sequence tell Westeros' history. Once again, I spoiled some of the future events by while reading wiki articles in an attempt to keep the multitude of characters straight in my head. TBH, now I am more curious to see the events play out. I'm also looking forward to the upcoming novel ;)

Hi Owbist,

Sorry to say Open Office can't be opened in MSWord.

About 5 years ago, I had my hands on a PERFECT program identicle to Word and I deleted it because I figured as long as I had Word, I wouldn't need it. Now I am pulling my hair out trying to find it.

I just came off from Googling ODT files and found this.

Might try AbiWord a free word processing program similar to MicrosoftÂ® Word. It is suitable for a wide variety of word processing tasks.
It's only 5.16MB

Sorry to say Open Office can't be opened in MSWord.
I don't understand. I thought your friend didn't have MSWord.

Hmm, I have got myself into trouble here I can see. I don't imagine Microsoft would open Open Office documents (.odt) but from what I have read over time I understood that Open Office would open any .doc file. Why would you create a .odt file peculiar to Open Office if you were communicating with others who use Word or MS Office?

If I confused anyone I humbly apologise, my experience with Open Office is restricted to things I have read about the program over time and I always felt it was a great alternative to MS. I have downloaded it but never installed.

Nonnie can't you save your files as .rtf - Rich Text Format - so they are readable in eother word or Wordperfect?

I don't understand. I thought your friend didn't have MSWord.
My friend gets attachments from people who send them done in MSWord that she can not open because she does not have MSWord and if she DL'd Open Office, she would still be out of luck.

Well, wadda you know. AbiWord 2.4.6 does open Word '97 - '03 .doc files. You can even check a box on install to have it the default program for .doc files.

I tried it with a 2007 Word .docx file, it opened, but the text was scrambled.

I haven't tried the 2.5.1 version that came out in June, beta I think for testers.
It has plugins for Wordperfect file import and
OpenDocument file import (the OpenOffice.org 2 format)

Wordperfect file import may be just what nonnie_ga could use.

Randy, that sounds great! But, I can't get it to download. After clicking on Download and going to the next page, what do I click on? I think I'm getting rattled because my brain(?)is getting fried trying to figure out all this stuff I don't know. Any suggestions? Thanks.

You click where it says Microsoft Windows to start the download. You'll also need to download the Import/Export plugins.

You're not alone, I didn't know where to click either at first.

Randy, that worked and is now installed. I have another question which I am somewhat embarassed to ask. How do I incorporate AbiWord to work with WordPerfect 10? In other words, now that I have it, what do I do with it?

nonnie_ga According to the Corel website, WP 10 will accept Word documents but the translated formatting may not be identical. Now Corel wouldn't be saying something that wasn't 100% true, would it? I haven't used WP for several years but a few years ago, the files were somewhat interchangeable.

ok, I figured it out.
You'll have to install the abiword-plugins-impexp-2.4.6 again (which are the import/export plugins)
When you install these, check the box that says WordPerfect Importer.

Then it's as easy as clicking file on the abiword taskbar and then open, then find your wordperfect (.wpd) document, it will open in abiword.
