Where to go in Eugene, Oregon

My roomie is in Eugene until Friday for training. Any suggestions on where to go in the evenings for sightseeing, food, etc? I'm not sure where her hotel is other than it's near a record store that she's already planning on going to.

She loves authentic mexican (not tex/mex or americanized mexican), sushi, italian, and can spend $18 on dinner on her expense account.

Too bad you didn't mention seafood. Only 45 minutes away here in Reedsport/Winchester Bay we have great food!

I'm sure when Deanna looks in, she can give you a lot of info about Eugene.

I was born and raised in Eugene and now live in Portland. There are a lot of great places to eat there but Mexican food, no so much.

I'll ask my sister who still lives in Eugene places she recommends. If your roomie likes beer there are several brew ups, one is a McMinnimins on the bank of the Willamette river in the most beatiful setting. McMinnimins is a funky local chain and serves pub food, personally I don't think the food matches the beatiful setting but it's a really nice place to go. The name of it escapes me at the momement; I'll ask my sister and get back to you. There is also a couple of nice Italian restaurants in town.

Wow, thanks so much everyone! We will take up the suggestion to stay on 101 to Florence and then go to Eugene. Deanna I will call you for sure, I'd love to meet up, and a salad from your garden would be a delicious honor if it's not too much trouble. We're in San Francisco right now, and I think it will be 3 or 4 days till we get to Eugene. From there we'll probably go to Corvallis just to spend some more time in the lush part since we've seen plenty of desert on our trip. Then across to Sisters, maybe Redmond, then Bend. Sounds like we'll be missing the fruit season, but we've also been keeping a list of all the food we've seen along the way: garlic and onions in trucks on the highway, artichokes growing along the road, lettuce, cauliflower, lots of strawberries, and more. So it will be cool to see the fields and orchards along the way even if the stands aren't open. And of course we love bottled grapes...by raw I just meant that we don't have a stove to cook onions or asparagus! Jeff loves pinot noir so maybe we'll tour a winery. The lava caves sound cool, and we're hoping to go to hot springs in Oregon too, since we haven't stopped in any along the way. I think lava flows, wineries, and hot springs are a good substitute for raspberries. We'll be getting back to Virginia just in time for berry season anyway. Thanks for all the tips! Any suggestions for hot springs would be great. Looks like we'll be spending 4 or 5 nights in Oregon! That will be great. I wish we could make the Hood River fruit loop, but I think that's too far out of the way...if we had another week we would have gone all the way to visit friends in Seattle, but I have to start work June 18 and we want to stop off at Mount Rushmore and in Chicago. I've had really good luck finding specific trees at tree farms. Using nurseryguide.com, you can call the wholesaler who will tell you where he has sold X tree retail so you can track it down -- and some will let you come to their farm to buy. Hughes Water Garden in Tualatin is awesome if you have a pond, stream or bog that you want to make a showpiece. Talk about water features! Incredible place to wander around and stare. Portland Nursery, Loen's in Sherwood/Tualatin (a must), 7-Dees, Al's, Garden World off I-5, Evans Farms in south Oregon City. Garden World is huge and very interesting, found some unique spectacular trees there, but their prices have gone up. Garden Corner in Tualatin has the prettiest collection of flowers I've ever seen. Classy place. If you want exotic conifers go to Peace of Mind nursery, make an appointment. Wow! This spring planted a Pinus monticola (finally!) from an Xmas tree farm, gorgeous, and a Quercus frainetto from a tree farm, thank goodness for nurseryguide.com There are a lot of nurseries around here. I look for those that take good care of their plants, repotting them when roots start hitting the sides and watering them thoroughly. Also, I like it when the staff actually knows something about the plants.

Johnson Brothers Greenhouse in Coburg is a must. Lots of terrific plants. You can wander there for hours. They also grow poinsettias and Christmas cactus for sale in November and December. Wish you could see those. Coburg is just a short trip out of Eugene. The books suggested by Ron will be helpful. I was thinking that perhaps you might find them at the Eugene Public Library so you would not have to buy them. The Eugene Public Library is on-line. Don't recall their URL, but if you do a search, you will find it easily. If you like garden stores, Down To Earth is a fun place downtown. It's in a neat old building. Not all garden store, but I always enjoy it. I don't know what the restrictions are for bringing seeds or plants back across the border, but they have such an interesting collection of seeds. I don't know if they will have them all cleared out by the time you get here or not. I love the large collection of sweet peas they sell. Lots of herbs, almost always some seeds from English companies as well as selling Territorial Seed, etc. Eugene is full of parks and bike/walking trails. Hope you will enjoy your visit. Mary

Lizy...It's the vintage PLAZA I used to stay in LOL not the Park. I always use the wrong name and have to look them up when I'm booking so I can get the right one. We were looking at the Park in Seattle for our last trip (couple of weeks ago) so I guess I had that on my mind. If you son has been there for over 3 years...thank him for many lovely nights of business travel (I was one time upgraded to the apartment...very cool). Our bathtub was purchased because of my stays at the Plaza. We have the 30" deep round soaking tub that they have in their guest rooms (or in many of them). I'd never seen one until I became a regular guest and HAD to have one at hoome! I called and wanted to find out what brand they were and couldn't get an answer until I spoke with the then GM who provided me with the information :) I wonder if it was him? Anyhoo, Kimpton has gotten to be a bigger chain and in a great way. We stayed there a week last month (in Seattle) and loved it every bit as much as I used to love the Plaza :)

She's pretty much confined to downtown, doesn't mind taking public transportation or walking (I'm still not sure exactly where she is - I'll find out later tonight). Her favorite place for seafood is Red Lobster and loves shrimp. She considers lobster "sea bugs" and won't go near them. She also likes ethnic foods, especially eastern european (pierogi is her all time favorite), indian, chinese, thai, etc. She might enjoy the brewery but she's a lightweight when it comes to alcohol.

I'm a lot more adventurous and will try just about anything - well maybe not fois gras or snails.

Thanks for the help so far - I knew this was the group to ask!

OK, letÂs seeÂÂÂ.

Can you find out if sheÂs at the Hampton Inn on W. 11th? ThereÂs a good Mexican place nearby called JaliscoÂs. Very reasonable. (SheÂs also less than 2 miles from my work!!)

Mexican:
JaliscoÂs (west Eugene)
Nachos (west Eugene)
The Mission (east Eugene)

Italian:
MazziÂs (other side of town and eating for $18 might be harder, but definitely worth it) (southeast)
ThereÂs an Olive Garden. (North central, across from Valley River Mall)

Sushi:
ShojiÂs (Japanese teppanyaki tables. About 10 guests per table, quite a show. $18 wonÂt do it here either). (south Eugene)

Pizza:
Pizza PeteÂs (a little, funky, very "Eugene" place, good food) (south Eugene)

Regional:
6th Street Grill and Microbrewery (downtown)

Tell her to check out the local phone book. There are menus from a few places. Lists by type of food. ThereÂs also street maps of Eugene and Springfield in the front Âblue pagesÂ.

She says thank you to everyone. She's at the Hilton across from the 6th Street Brewery (which she said was "a wee bit on the pricey side"). She said so far they've eaten at Sweet Basil Thai on Pearl & 10th and it was fabulous and cheap!

Now she's on the hunt for somewhere with really good salmon.

Newman's Fish Co. 15th and Willamette I think.
It's a little market in front and a walk up window in back.
You buy Fish and Chips and it's served in a paper basket, eat outdoors.

You choice of "fish". Salmon, cod, scallops, halibut, shrimp, etc.

Not fancy! Good fried food!! Under $10 for sure. More of a lunch thing than sit-down dinner.

Oregon Electric Station on 3rd/Willamette is awesome!! But.....dinner is going to run $25 and up. Nice lounge though, maybe a light meal there??

Deanna (any chance she could drive to the coast for dinner one night??? It's an hour drive, but you'll find the freshest seafood! Salmon fishing is shut down on our coast this year so it's harder to find good, local fish).

Oregon Electric Station! Boy I am out of touch. That's a great place. If she is looking at someplace quick and easy 5th Street market has lunch type food.

The restaurant I was thinking about is called North Bank
(Deanna is it still called that??)

Boy, I think North Bank is still there, but it's Mcmenamin's now....I think.

I just checked the phone book though and neither are listed. Hmmmm.............
I think it's a little spendy. No more than Electric Station though.

$18 on the expense account won't take long to spend!! LOL

I'm not the best help in the world........I don't eat out much! But I'm sure willing to look things up or call around for ya!!
