The things I would want to know is what brand is the hard drive, it only says generic, same with the dvd, it comes with no fans or video or audio? you will be adding that on your own?

It looks ok but of course I don't know anything about them.
I am assuming you will be going with xp not vista.

Just make sure you get some really good fans to put in there.
I am an AMD person, just prefer it.
Congrats on the new purchase.
Of course you could put in one of the linux distros and not have to pay for an OS plus it would run really good on there. You can get most all the linux os on live cd which you can just stick in any pc, start it up and then run the linux os just from the cd with out ever installing a thing on your pc, good way to see how you like it. That hard drive would be big enough to partition and put linux as well as windows on it and dual boot.

Pooh, if you will be installing XP that has been installed on another box then MS might try to refuse validation. If so you need to phone them (the toll free number comes up somewhere during the process) and explain what you have done. You may need to be a little persistent but be sure to succeed.

Called Kitchaid and the very nice customer service rep said that was not her area of expertise and then read me a letter obviously written one of their cororate legal people. Something to the effect of 1)we are aware of the 'isolated' and very rare problems (is over a hundred known considered to be 'isolated') that have occured. If we find that your model is one of the ones that are having this issue we will contact you blah, blah, blah. Basically the same information in the news report I have linked below. And again, from the info I have, it is not just one brand and not just one model #. One correction on my part - I thought it was the CPA reviewing this, apparently it is the Consumer Product Safety Agency, who said they have received numerous reports. I stressed that I did not want to wait until there is a fire and someone is hurt but my concerns fell on deaf ears (not the rep but the co.) What was disturbing is that at the end of this prewritten spiel they said that if we had any more questions, we should call 800-422-1230 (same # on the news report). Well, that was the phone number I had dialed originally, which lead me to her. When I mentioned this to her she said there was no one else I could talk with about the matter. P.S. Not that I have a huge house but my bedroom is on a different floor at the opposite end of the house. Everyone else closes their bedroom doors and have slept through fire alarms caused by my cooking. For what it is worth I mentioned Garden Web and that I posted the information on the kitchen and appliance threads. I have attached the news report from the CT NBC station. Time to buy a new computer...recommendations?

I am back with an update. I did talk to an independent computer tech person who immediately told me it was not worth fixing my machine. She felt that the problem I was having with it not turning on maybe the motherboard. I am also seeing the case suddenly deteriorating faster and faster. Opening the computer, moving it from my lap to a table, keeping the screen upright, are now something I have to think about and fool with every time I pick it up. So, thank you Sue for the suggestion but I've decided I am ready to get a new machine. I am especially anxious to get it done before it goes kapoot and I can't get my files off of it to a new machine. I do hope you enjoy your machine as long as you can though, Sue!! :-) I have enjoyed my Dell and would have been just as happy to stick with it. secsteve....the 'trackball' I refer to is the one that is part of the keyboard of my Dell. It is in the middle between the G and H keys and very small movements with the index finger make it very easy to place it right where you want it easily. The button to select once the pointer is where you want it is right under the space bar and I can reach it with my thumb without even taking my hand out of typing position. Very convenient and easy to use. On the Apple it is instead the pad which you swipe your finger across to move the pointer. The key to select it is below the pad, no where near the keyboard, so you are always having to change position and taking your hands out of typing position. I just don't know what they were thinking to let go of the arrangement that works so well with the keyboard, to adopt this style. We went in to the Apple Store last night and even the salesperson who demonstrated using the pad, didn't seem to have any more mastery over it than I was getting. Slow and awkward. They have NO computers that offer the trackball as part of the keyboard. He suggested a wireless mouse, which I think they offer, but didn't have in the store. From what I can see of it online, I am not sure how easily it will work. It does appear to be one that you don't actually move the mouse around so much as you move the tracking ball on the mouse. So that is one option. According to him, there are no manufacturers that are making the keyboard w the tracking ball any more. Hmmm...will have to check that out. I asked him, what about people who have Carpel Tunnel Syndrome, which is a pretty common problem for people who type. He looked at me like I was speaking Greek. [g] Most salespeople in computer stores are young people it seems to me..lol. Of course, makes sense. He did show me some sort of contraption that holds the computer on it, with front support to rest your wrists on and that elevates the computer for air circulation. But if you are using it that way, the ergonomics are just not right for both the keyboard and the tracking pad and buttons. And if you use the pad to raise the computer, now your arms and shoulders are in a much more awkward and unsupported position. Very strange that for a company that put so much thought into ease of use and common sense applications that they seem to have spent no time on ergonomics. So disappointing! It is a little frustrating because if it were not for that issue, I may have already bought an Apple. It is just an issue that I cannot ignore. I was very impressed with everything I read on their website about their machines. Another thing I like is that they will transfer everything from your old computer to the new one for you. There is a store close by too. So, this afternoon, I am going to call Dell and see what their story is. Not what I expected to be doing this week. :-( Anyone else who has some Apple or Dell experience, I pretty much have it narrowed down to these two. Thanks pm2

Need new home computer

I have always used Windows. I also have a I phone and bought a I pad Air last year. I find I rarely use the I pad. It is nice for pictures and reading as the screen is bigger. But I rarely use it because its too big and is not a phone. I use my I phone for almost everything. It is always in my purse or my pocket. The I pad gets left home. I take it for traveling but find I wind up reading on my phone. I'm not thrilled with the way Apple works with some of the things I use frequently. I can't access My Docs or anything on my computer. I know there is a way, but the work around is difficult so I don't do it. I wind up on my Windows PC each night. What I don't like about Apple is how proprietary it is. There are Apps which help, but Apple doesn't allow Flash and some of the things I use don't work or are complicated to get to work. If Windows came out with a phone and tablet which was good, I would switch. I've tried the Surface and the Windows phone and it doesn't compare to Apple. I also don't like the various Android phones. I actually miss my old Blackberry, which was so easy to use and worked with either platform. Think hard and twice before switching totally to Apple. It's not as simple as you think, in my opinion. I presently have 3 computers. One will be decommissioned.
One computer has XP Home Edition OEM. It will have to stay that way.
Another computer has XP-HE Retail. I may wipe that one
clean and install the OS on the new computer. Not sure yet.
I have looked at Vista and didn't particularly care for it.
My 3rd computer has Windows 98se on it. I stopped using
it about a year ago. I'll probably take it to my Dad so he can
have a little bit faster (400Mhz) computer to play his games on.
That would be a big improvement over his little 166Mhz computer.

I had to call MS once before about an OS installation.

I think I'll email the seller and ask what brand of
hard drive and DVD drive I'm getting. I'm curious now.

Thanks.

Pooh Bear, it looks like a good system. The embedded GeForce 7 graphics controller is going to use 256MB of your system memory for video, but the MB has a PCI-Express x16 Slot. This means you can add a better video card at a later date and you'll get the 256MB back if you do. The sound and network cards are also embedded, but the MB also has additional PCI slots for future upgrades or replacements. That's something I look for when purchasing a system.

There's nothing wrong with embedded (on-board) components until they fail. Having slots to replace the embedded parts is a very good thing IMO.

I'm sure the processor fan and case fans will provide sufficient cooling. Also, the HD and DVD appear to have a 3-year warranty. That being the case, I don't think the brand really matters. The seller probably purchases from different suppliers and uses different brands, as all computer manufactures do.

I think you are getting a good system for the price. I'd probable be happy with the sound and network cards, but would look at upgrading the video card someday.

Good luck.

I emailed and asked about this:

Hello, just out of curiousity, what brand of
hard drive, DVD drive, and RAM is in this computer.
Thanks.
Pooh Bear

Samsung, Pioneer and Buffalo.
Thank you.
PC Market Inc

So it looks like I'm getting a great system.
Never heard of Buffalo brand memory. I'll look them up.

My computers right now have on board sound/video/lan.
I don't do anything major that needs a powerful video card.
And I don't mind giving up a bit of RAM for the onboard card.

I am going to have to get a new monitor. I heard a loud pop one
day from the back of this one and then the color went screwball.
It's all pale now. A different monitor looks fine.
So I know the problem is the monitor and I need a new one.

But otherwise, this looks like a great system to get.

Thanks.

Good for you! Yes I am sorry I had not even looked at the motherboard just did not see any mention on the list of what sound and video card were used but the embedded is fine if you don't have a need for heavy duty stuff in those areas.

I have never heard of Buffalo either.

Pooh I have seen some really great prices for LCD monitors around lately they are really dropping. I love my ACER 19" LCD, it just makes a world of difference not having that big monitor taking up my desk. I got my ACER from buy.com for a great price. And on my local craigslist there are always some great prices too.

Enjoy the new system.

Follow up with your purchase, the seller doesn't have a great feedback record. Keep all your purchase records, and receipts. You will have either gotten a great deal or a really bad one! eBay is one place where you need to be cautious with electronic purchases, there are many scammers who prey there.

I don't understand.
He has been a member for 8 years with a feedback score of 98%+.
I would take that as having good feedback.
What am I missing here.

Anything less than 99% is considered below average on eBay. It isn't like a math test where 98% is great.

Look at his feedback from others. Here is all the negative feedback he has received, he didn't respond to any of them which is odd (a good seller will defend themselves) and it doesn't look like he tries to help if there is a problem.

There are lots of people who had good experiences too, but on eBay negative feedback says a lot about the seller.
