Christening gift?

Our neighbors' baby is being christened Saturday,

afterwards they are having a big party to celebrate that and the fourth of July. I bought a Precious Moments figurine called "Dedicated to God"- a little infant laying on pillows- with a place on the bottom for the baby's name and the date. Is this tacky? My husband doesn't like it. I am not a Precious Momements type person, and don't collect things like that myself.

Anyone have a better gift idea? They are great neighbors and I want to get them something nice to celebrate the occasion.

The question is, not if you or your husband are the "Precious Moments" types, but if the recipient is. If so, then give the figurine. If you are uncomfortable with it (as I would be), then don't give it. But try to se ewhat the parents would like.

My fall-back gift is always a really nice picture frame. It seems to go over well, no matter the occasion or the tastes of the recipient.

I agree. I try to give what the recipient values, not what I value. If this is what the parents will treasure, then this is the perfect gift. If you are in doubt, then I would fall back to something less specific and gift a picture frame, as suggested, or some other more general offering.

I think if the grandparents were only invited the week before, then likely the party is just an impromptu occaision to get together and enjoy the new baby. In this case I think it would be foolish to give up a vacation with plane tickets bought and paid for, but certainly not worth getting miffed about either. So it didn't work out for the grandparents this time; they can stop in for a visit as soon as they get back. Even better, they can invite the young family to their home for dinner and a visit; being parents of a young child can be exhausting and they'd probably welcome the opportunity for a relaxing visit with family. For me, it doesn't matter the event. If *I* WANT to give a gift, I give a gift. Doesn't have to be a reason. Sometimes someone needs something or really wants something, maybe I have something or can get a good deal on it - I'll give a gift. I don't give "gifts" out of obligation. They're not gifts then. That's called extortion. I don't recall dinners after around here. Often an invitation back to the house or coffee/cake in the basement. That's about it. If I were giving something to pay for the meal, I'd make it cash. Then they can decide whether to put toward expenses or buy something for the kid, or put it into savings for the future. A gift of that value, well that depends on how people value things too. Don't get shamed into doing something you don't want to do. If you feel right about it, do it. Or don't as the case may be.

I don't see why you couldn't give a gift of money. When my nieces were Christened I gave them each a piece of "baby" jewelry (silver or gold bracelet, cross on a chain, locket). Anne

Mimi--thanks for getting this really rolling with your post and of course to kmcg! That particular frame is one I've had a couple years and sadly can't recall where I found it, but it's pewter I think and one of my favorites, and I think it'll fit with DD's decor. I actually suspect I found it at Ross, TJMaxx, Marshall's, Tuesday Morning or some sort like that since I know where I usually find frames. I searched a bit for one for this project and came up empty with one I really liked. I happened to recall that I already had this frame and used it since the frame looks like new still. Good luck in your search! I have one other silver square frame and may have to use it for another project, but I'm on the lookout now for frames. I love the wood one you used also and newhomebuilder's, too, but didn't find one like them around me here.

Before giving that I would be very sure the parents are into precious moments stuff.
I'm with the picture frame or an outfit, or a sweater, or a hard copy of Winnie the Pooh...or Good Night Moon.

Good choice. Precious Moments things are icky. Maybe clothes that are larger, like size 1?

I like to give a little girl a small white bible with her name engraved on it and the date of the christening. Boys get a black one.
