Tee-hee... I made the London paper today!

Long story short, I was in Malibu last weekend when there were a few incidents happening with the paparazzi. I didn't see it but I kind of got the aftermath when I went to the beach to shoot an assignment for a flash photography class. If you've got a camera in Malibu these days, the locals don't exactly roll out the red carpet for you. My friend, who lives there, wrote about me in her L.A. Times blog and that was picked up by this reporter for the Guardian, who interviewed me (not that I had anything meaningful to say). I was a reporter for many years so it was kind of fun to be on the other side of it. On the other hand, he wasn't great with facts. Whatever.

Wow! Our very own paparazza. Diana, that is very cool.

I was quoted in the Wall St Journal once in an article about appliance colors. It was so funny to be riding the train to work and watching people reading the article in the paper.

Strange seeing your name in print, isn't it?

i love to watch the hummingbirds, have ya'll checked out the hummingbird forum?? there's a guy over there who made an awesome, really awesome hummingbird feeder!! and he's a farm boy!! LOL he posted a bunch of video's for talla to see, that was so sweet!! she had to see every single one of them!! no stinking kidding!! LOL i put the link here for ya all to look at!! i want one sooo bad!! now that, i can't do just yet!! i'm so involved in this fixing/cleaning up this contraption, LOL one room down, no two rooms down, 5 more to go.!!! yeeee HAWWWWW LOL grant told me there is no way that my gh is level!!! he said what in the world makes me think its level?? i said the leveler does!! he said, there is no way its level!!! i said, dude that leveler said it is, i did that level at every single "intersection" and it leveled out. on all 4 sides. it just looks funny because of the ground. errr!! MEN!!! go and mess up my plan!! LOL it must be that dang thyroid. that's what i'm gonna lay it on!! i need to vent!! that's it!! LOL he's getting that thing radiated and gone- assuming it will take the dye?? something like that. LOL we have something like 5 more weeks to wait to find out. its going to be a long wait and fighting. i can feel it. ok, i'm don'e. we did find a pair of jeans for talla that she likes!! now lets see if she will actually wear them@! LOL they do have butterfly's on them!! LOL we didn't find anything for him though he's pretty picky. i said well, honey, you are always working anyhow, so i guess, thats alright. The magazine supplement in today's paper has a recipe using flank steak (London Broil) that sounds good. Guy Fieri's Bloody Mary Flank Steak 4 to 8 servings Prepare ahead 1 cup tomato juice (V-8 preferable) 1/2 cup vodka 1 tsp. sea salt 1 tsp. freshly ground black pepper 1 tsp. hot sauce 1 Tbsp lemon juice 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 tsp. onion powder 1 tsp. celery seed 1 Tbsp prepared horseradish 4 Tbsp. olive oil 1 lb. flank steak In a large bowl, thoroughly mix all ingredients except the flank steak. Pour half of the marinade into a 1-gallon resealable plastic bag and add the flank steak. Marinate in the refrigerator for at least 8 hours and up to 24. Pour the remaining marinade into a saucepan over medium-high heat, bring to a boil and simmer until it is reduced by half, about 10 to 15 minutes. Season to taste. Preheat grill to high or heat a skillet over high heat. Remove the flank steak from the marinade and wipe off excess with paper towels. Grill or pan-sear both sides, then lower the heat to medium and cook to medium rare, about 8 to 10 minutes. Let the steak rest, covered with foil, for 5 to 10 minutes. Cut the steak on the bias, against the grain, and serve with the reduced marinade. If desired, garnish with cut celery stalks and leaves and grilled tomatoes. The Worst Pies In London

Made gluten free Sweeney meat pies, v2. Added 2 tsp xantham gum to each 1 cup of Bob's Red Mill gluten free flour. Otherwise dough was prepared as before - cold butter, ice water, salt, sugar, and refrigerated. Filling was 1 part tinker, 1 part tailor - oh, okay, beef and pork - plus onion, carrot, garlic, ginger, Guiness Stout, a bit of red wine, various herbage, salt and pepper, cayenne pepper, Worcestershire Sauce, tomato paste, anchovy paste, and milk. Cooked slow, thickened with gluten free flour. This dough was easier to work with. Rolled out and formed into individual purse pies, not as sturdy as wheat flour pie dough, but not bad. Then - big problem! I think my oven is breaking down. Hours and hours of pre-heating and it wouldn't go above 320F. The only way to get more heat was to use "high broil". So I broiled my pastie pies. Definitely was not Plan A. With a bit of aluminum foil, it worked, kind of. The gluten free crust didn't achieve a flakey golden brown, but it did get browned and a bit crisp. And it held together fine, the pies were plenty sturdy enough to pick up and eat one-handed. Heck, I dropped one on the floor and it still held together well enough to eat. Anyway, they looked like: All ten disappeared, my son ate four. So I'll keep working on this dish, it has promise. I tried brushing on melted butter to get a golden brown, but it didn't work, so I will try an egg wash next - make sense? I wonder if adding some yeast will yield a lighter texture to the crust. Now, what do to about the blasted oven?

Hello everyone, Such a beautiful Sunday and I am indoors doing housework etc., watching my leaves fallll! I have a question and I am looking for your comments about composting yellow Norway maple leaves. I will rake up about 20-30 bags this year, no mulching with mower because I don't have one yet to replace my old one. Plan is to trial composting the leaves behind my garage, mostly morning sun. Everything I read says the compost from these leaves is healthy/valuable in gardening. Does this type of compost actually contribute valuable nutrients to my perennial plants?... apparently this type of compost can be used in vegetable gardening?... I suspect I will have to manually turn the leaves to reduce clumping...all comments welcome.

Sounds kind of exciting, as long as they don't bash your camera! Wow now you're famous in London.

Next time you'll need to wear a printed T-shirt that says..."I'm just a tourist" or something like that LOL.

The picture I took of one of the guys at the beach turned out great (to me, anyway!). I liked it so much, I put it on my new web site. I just launched the site last week so it's a work in progress but if you want to see it (and remember, I am not selling you anything), he's the tattoed guy, the last picture in the people section.

I'm working on a volunteer project with the Salvation Army and did some shooting this weekend. I'm just getting that underway but you can see some of the initial portraits under The Alegria Project. I'm really happy with the way they're turning out so far.

Thanks, you guys. I'm eager to add to this site. But one thing you may not have seen is my gallery from the trip Vicki and I took to Ecuador in February. It's on my pbase account. It's pretty cool, though.

Tracey, it is Hal Sparks! I did a shoot of him at his house. He is cute. You also might recognize Victoria Recano from "The Insider" (she's a reporter) and Melanie Paxson (with her dog Owen... he looks just like a child!), who was on "Notes from the Underbelly."

Diana, you do beautiful work! One of the photos was on the beach with a couple and a young child - was that Westward or Zuma Beach, by any chance, near Malibu?

Oh yes, Ellen, I meant to write you back... we laughed about your email. Her, uh, "problem" is fine. She's very famous for that problem. I can't tell you how many people send me clippings or ask about it. Right now she's enjoying the ones that say her real age is 47.... 13 years younger than reality.

I'm so behind on posting! Diana, I've been meaning to ask you if Hal Sparks is as smart and funny in person as he comes across on tv. I've always thought he'd be a fun person to just hang out with. Can you tell I have a serious crush :)?
