Zep, Clean my Computer

Hey, Zep. I am on my old machine now. It is an IBM with Windows XP, about 7 yrs. old. I use it mostly to play games, (DH thinks that the games slow the PC down) and store stuff. It has 256MB Ram but I have had the message about virtual memory. I have the freebie AVG 8.5 and Super Anti Spy, which I don't think is working. Hope you can help me.

Click Here to download HJTInstall.exe
Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Â Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
Â By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Â Click on Install.
Â It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Â Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Â Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Â Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" and Paste the entire contents of the log (no attachments) into your next post.
DO NOT use the AnalyzeThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what HJT lists will be harmless or even required by your Operating System.

you could create a new user, log into that user, then delete the original user. this will remove all the my documents and pretty much anything stored in the D&S directory for that user. in win2K it's a bit more difficult than XP, but same applies. basically click on start>settings>control panel. then click on users and passwords, then advanced, then click advanced again, then click on the user folder, right click on the right pane, add user, give the user administrative rights, then log off and back on as the new user, then repeat above, but delete the user you were logged on as before. it's not totally gonna get all your data out, but it will take care of your email and a few other bits of stuff. Hmm, I just found out the way to find out where the files that Secunia is updating are located. If you right click on the program in Secunia, and then click on 'show details', it shows the location and you can double click on it. The Symantec location led me to a folder called Shared Symantec (which I did not see directly under Program Files, but it was under Common Files under Program Files). I deleted the whole folder. Hopefully it doesn't contain any files that I need seeing as it was 'shared'. I'll leave it in my recycling bin for awhile. Also I double-clicked the AVG location in Secunia, and deleted ALOT of AVG files. I guess I should have played around more, but sort of gave up when I didn't see anything under Program Files. Thanks for your help.

Other Defragment Programs on my XP computers & computer noise?

Two steps backwards, one step forward. While dealing with the impending death of my own pc's hard drive, I had plenty of time to work on her computer. I opened the case. Cleaned out the dust bunnies much more thoroughly than I had in October. I found the fan - and actually took it out and cleaned it thoroughly (mostly compressed air, and a little damp cloth). I did remove the label and add a drop of WD 40. (While I was at it, I searched for replacement fans in case this didn't work - and bookmarked some - it would be so simple to replace if needed.) Put the pieces back together and started it up. Still noisy. I started organizing her files, deleting duplicates and ridiculous things she didn't even know she had on there. I put everything in logical folders - then copied her 16GB of video (Ipod videos and flip share) onto a 32mb flash drive. Deleted 8gb of that video bc. it's also on her ipod. Then I ran auslogics defrag. Defrag was 100% successful - and she now has about 15GB free on a 40GB drive. Now the noise is less. I hear the fan a little - but you have to stop to listen. Not sure if it just took running a little for the oil to do it's thing. From what folks said earlier, it's unlikely that freeing up space and defragging reduced the noise. So far, so good. (I even think I could have turned it on with the case open - but i didn't have to.) Thanks. Lynn.

Hi,

Very nice, if you add more RAM (Memory) the computer will function much better you have a very small amount at 256MB, XP Will run on 512MB but bottom line is will run an perform better on 1Gig a byte, adding ram to a computer is the least expensive way to achieve greater performance to the computer.

Scan you computer here it will scan for ram an should tell you what kind to get ect. See link below...

So, to add memory to RAM, that is a hardware thing? I will check it out. I learned a lot tonite, you have been very helpful. You don't think I need to add the malware thing?

Click Start, double click Control panel, in there look for Java looks like a a coffee cup double click it look for option to up date, only install Java un check any toolbars or additional software that wants to ride with it..

Zep, I am back from vacation and ordered a new HDD for my desktop (old one died just out of warranty) from Tiger.Direct. I ordered the Western Digital Caviar 500GB, Serial ATA HD7200/16MB/SATA-3G. My HP book has good directions for removing the old one and installing a new one in its place. I may be coming back for help later when I'm ready to do the job. Didn't intend to highjack this thread, but just wanted to add my thanks to Zep for help I have received.
