Zep, Clean my Computer

casi

Hey, Zep. I am on my old machine now. It is an IBM with Windows XP, about 7 yrs. old. I use it mostly to play games, (DH thinks that the games slow the PC down) and store stuff. It has 256MB Ram but I have had the message about virtual memory. I have the freebie AVG 8.5 and Super Anti Spy, which I don't think is working. Hope you can help me.

    Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Â Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
    Â By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
    Â Click on Install.
Â It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Â Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Â Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Â Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" and Paste the entire contents of the log (no attachments) into your next post.
DO NOT use the AnalyzeThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what HJT lists will be harmless or even required by your Operating System.

You can have more than one pdf reader. If you do not need the space you can leave AR7 on your system if you want. All you would have to do is make Foxit your default reader during installation. If you decide to uninstall, though I am still evaluating Revo Uninstaller I do have to admit that it did a quick and easy job of removing AR8 off my system. No special tools, uninstallers or techniques were required. DA

The one thing you absolutely must do is ground yourself so that no static electric charge can happen, that can definitely cause things to go awry. At any computer type store or electronics store you can pick up an anti-static wrist band, they cost like $2, you velcro it to your wrist then attach the clip to the metal part of the computer, this keeps a good ground so there is no chance of a shock. I only work on my pc with a wrist band on. Using the canned air is good but you have to be careful not to get too close to the motherboard and use the air gently. I have a little bitty vacuum made just for cleaning a computer that has a long skinny extension that gets in the nooks and crannies, but I would not use a regular vac they could be much too powerful and suck something loose. Also make sure all connections are nice and tight when you are done, messing around in there can loosen things. Most little fixit computer places will clean one for pretty cheap. You can buy some of the mini computer vacs at most electronics stores for $20 or so which do both vac and blow. Better than spending the money on canned air.

Wow, there is a lot of good information here. Glad I posted with my problem, now I have something new to try out. Thanks owbist. ravencajun, thanks for the compliment but I only had the first half of it figured out and cboy came to the rescue and helped me with the last half of it. I can't take all the credit. "Smiles" Then zep516 came in catching the fact that System Restore wasn't working right and gave me great information on how to correct that. This was the first time that I've had problems with my desktop, but I have changed the backround on it before and I remembered that and I thought why not check it out and see if I could get it to change and that is when I discovered that the backround had been changed and all I had to do was to put it back like I had it, but then I didn't know how to get the icons back and that's when cboy posted the solution for me. If that ever happens to me again I will know exactly what to do. Thanks owbist for telling me how to move the icons down to the taskbar. I will try that on Wednesday, I will have more time to try it out then. thirdfrt!!!

    Hi,

Very nice, if you add more RAM (Memory) the computer will function much better you have a very small amount at 256MB, XP Will run on 512MB but bottom line is will run an perform better on 1Gig a byte, adding ram to a computer is the least expensive way to achieve greater performance to the computer.

Scan you computer here it will scan for ram an should tell you what kind to get ect. See link below...

and you know what would be really nice to say zep could you please help me rather than Zep, Clean my computer! I am sure it was not meant the way it sounds... but a please and thank you do mean an awful lot for those donating their time to help.

Zep you are doing an awesome job. I know how time consuming these tasks are so I will personally say a thank you for chipping in here to help out the way you do.

I will also add a "Thank You" to Zep for helping me so many times.

Zep, I am back from vacation and ordered a new HDD for my desktop (old one died just out of warranty) from Tiger.Direct. I ordered the Western Digital Caviar 500GB, Serial ATA HD7200/16MB/SATA-3G. My HP book has good directions for removing the old one and installing a new one in its place. I may be coming back for help later when I'm ready to do the job. Didn't intend to highjack this thread, but just wanted to add my thanks to Zep for help I have received.
