Congratulations to Spain! Having your team win a championship is a big deal!!

Boston won the World Series & basketball this year (and we 'should' have won the Super Bowl). Lots of duck boat parades.

It's just fun to cheer for 'your' team. Spain's waited long enough for their turn to party! I would have enjoyed watching the game. My son played competitive youth soccer for about ten years.

Hurray for Spain! Isn't it fun? I am like you -- a fair-weather fan. When things get exciting, I get interested. There has not been much to be excited about in Philadelphia for a looooong time.

I remember when the Flyers won the Stanley Cup a thousand years ago. The city went nuts.

I'm not much into sports, but I heard our British neighbors cheering loudly, so I knew it must be the "footie" championship.

I switched on the TV and watched the last half-hour or so of the game. Very exciting, and I was happy for Spain!

We are big soccer (futbol) fans here, my dad is from Italy and both of my sons are avid players. We have been following the season very closely this year, hoping for another Italian championship. The Spanish team played their hearts out yesterday, it was an amazing sight to see. My 15 year old niece said the players on the Spanish team are hot:-) Uh, yeah, of course I didn't notice that......

Nancy...yes we were both rooting for Spain. Although Wolf is German he likes Spanish soccer and is always in favour of Spain winning any international game. He played the game when he was a youngster growing up in Germany. He buys a daily national Spanish soccer newspaper and knows about all the players and teams.
There are two daily soccer newspapers in Spain....just shows how popular it is here!

Donna yes there are new young players on the team ......I haven't had a good look at them all yet though. :-)

I'll have to go watch the homecoming on TV news tonight. I caught a glimpse of their plane landing in Madrid on the news. As it was arriving and docking, there was a huge Spanish flag on a pole sticking out of the cockpit window.
(I didn't know you could open the windows on an airplane LOL.!)

I was afraid to open this post. I thought you were going to tell us that after 44 years you had decided to move back to Canada. I hated the thought of no more stories and pictures of Tenerife. I'm glad you are staying and congrats to Spain!

wow, that must have been quite the game, we watched the spain/ italy game, was that the semi final ? at what point in the game was the winning point scored ?
that field is so big, I'm always astounded someone can score at all, except for shootouts !!!

Yes that Spain vs Italy would have been the semi-final Mitch.
The winning goal against Germany was scored in minute 32 of the game which was the last quarter hour of the first part. I didn't see it as I went to a video conf I had with my brother (in Canada) on Skype and as he had his TV on he said Spain had already scored a goal.
Well I saw the replays of that goal anyway LOL.

Here's a pic of the flag out the window of the cockpit as the plane was landing in Madrid with the homecoming team. The plane was already on the ground when they opened the window LOL!

And here's a short one minute video made by a Spanish TV channel on the link below, (has full screen option) showing the goal and the excitement afterwards.
You can see the Spanish royal family, Queen Sofia (in a red suit) and King Juan Carlos (navy jacket & striped tie) jumping up in their excitement as well.

Mitch now my DH tells me that the game Spain/Italy was a quarter final game and not the semifinal!

Spain's semi final was against Russia, whom they beat with a score of three/zero.

thanks for the info !! that quarter final game was won in shoot outs, I find that very nerve-wracking to watch them shoot on the goalies.
