Accidently deleted all inbox messages....

I accidently deleted all inbox messages. Thank goodness there was nothing that was very important but I would like to know what key I must have hit to do this.

It would sorta be helpful to know what email program (or webmail) you were using. My crystal ball isn't working very well just now. Thankee.

Sorry, as you can probably tell I am not computer savvy.
It is Outlook Express.

I've had messages like that. Delete. Let me assure you that the USPS, FedEx, UPS, or any other major carrier is NEVER EVER going to send you a email attempting to clarify delivery. First off, they likely don't even have your email address. Second, they really don't care that much or perhaps, more accurately don't have the time (read labor dollars) to clarify addresses. If the sender mis-addressed the package it's going back (it's the sender's responsibility to get it right, not the carrier's) or it's going to be delivered to the wrong address (remember it's the shipper's responsibility to get it right and the carrier gets paid either way).

Shaddy, Move all of the messages you want to keep from the inbox and then do this. How to delete inbox/outbox files NB: Email program has to be closed. 1) Click on Start/Find/Files or Folders 2) Ensure you have c:\ selected in 'Look in' 3) Type in inbox.idx and click 'find now' 4) Ensure you can see the correct file by checking in 'in folder' so you can see if it's an outlook express or internet mail file etc 5) Right click on the file and select delete. 6) Change the search to look for inbox.mbx and click 'find now' 7) Repeat steps 4 and 5 8) Restart the PC The same procedure applies to outbox.mbx and outbox.idx

I have one friend at this point who will forward things that have gone through multiple addresses, and just the one. I've told everyone else to knock it off and the only people offended (and they did get over it) were my mother and one woman I've known many years. Oh wait, one brother in law doesn't email at all now, not ever, since I told him I don't read political forwards, election time or not ;) The one dear friend I don't correct - lost her son a few years ago and I find her somewhat fragile still. I wouldn't hurt her or embarrass her for the world, so I make an exception and remain on her forwards list.

Anyone else getting false notifications of new messages?

Surely I'm not the only one????? That feels a bit like persecution, lol. It happened AGAIN today. I had an alert for two new messages. I went through both the old and new inboxes, and the TWO OLDEST messages were showing as new. These weren't even messages I had received, but two that I had SENT...in 2016! This seems to be a glitch in the new mailbox, since it's there they keep reappearing as new. I'm not even going to bother with reporting the issue at this point, as it's basically an exercise in futility. Sooooooooo...if anyone sends me a message and you don't get an answer right away, it's because I'm ignoring the alerts! Apologies in advance. John

If you had 1 message selected for deletion, and then accidentally hit SHIFT or CRTL+SHIFT and then selected another message...it's possible that you selected multiple messages for deletion. That would be my first guess...for what its worth.

Might look in your trash bin. Windows maintenance has been known to do maintenance too well - to correct its excessive cleaning addiction they started leaving a copy of the mail in the recycle bin for you to at least have a chance to get them back.

Or check the Deleted Messages in your email. Mine go there until I delete them from there and then to the recycle bin. Depends on your email preferences settings. Sandy

This is why I have never set my Deleted messages folder to be emptied when I close Outlook Express. Accidents happen but as Breenthumb suggests yours may well be in the Deleted items folder. If simply drag them back to the inbox.

A free application called Recuva may help you if indeed you have deleted the messages. I have used the application with both positive and negative results on various file formats.. The longer you wait the greater the chance that the lost e-mails will be over-written by the system.

Several email utilities send deleted messages from the "inbox" to the "trash" box. Look at the local folders (in the email utiltiy). Do you find these folders, or similar: In, Sent, Unsent, and Trash? The deleted messages are not truly deleted until these have been deleted from the "trash" folder. To restore a message (or messages), go to the trash folder, select (highlight) the desired message(s) to be moved, click on the "move" button and follow the instructions. It should present a drop down menu of folders. Select one and the highlighted files will be moved to that folder.

Recently my server changed to gmail but I still retrieve all my mail in Outlook Express.
The good thing about that is-----
All my mail is still there (in gmail) that I delete from OE but every so often I have to go to the gmail site to delete all the old messages as they build up etc.
