LL Bean Gift Certificate

I have had success in giving a shower head in established relationships. There are so many to choose from too. The recipients are always surprised and I've never experienced a duplicate gift.

I agree, LL Bean is good, and on-line. Or, a good garden place in their area, if you know one.

I'm kind of looking at the same problem with Amanda and David, they've been together for 9 years, have children, have a house and the necessary stuff. I told her I'd throttle her if she didn't register somewhere, so at least she can get some decent cookware and new sheets and towels instead of 13 cookie jars and a chip and dip set!

I know others here hate the registries and hate the gift certificates, but I love 'em. I'm getting David a gift certificate to Menard's for his birthday, otherwise I'm totally lost. I guess I could pay his dentist bill instead but it seems even worse, LOL.

When we were young, we would have loved having the dentist's bill paid! Great gift!

Maybe you could tell your friends you'd like to give them a gift, ask them what they'd like. Maybe tickets to a home game or the opera or a concert or something else that's not traditional. They'll probably tell you they don't need anything, but maybe they'll come 'round and give a suggestion.

I'm buying them a year's worth of dental insurance. Yeah, really. They need it, David has a crown in the front that he needs fixed and it's expensive. Dental insurance, yup...

That doesn't help L, much though, somehow I doubt she'll buy them insurance, LOL. I'd still go with a gift certificate.

Well, when my brother re-married, I gave him and his new spouse a chain saw. They were thrilled because they just had purchased a new-to-them home with a very neglected garden and had masses of limbs to trim. Difficult to wrap, LOL, but I was sure I wouldn't be duplicating anyone else's gift!

How about a gift certificate to Lee Vally Tools? They are a great company and have the kinds of gardening tools most of us can only dream of. (For cooks they have terrific microplanes and that to-die-for maslin pan.)

I was thinking that a sampler of heirloom seeds would be a great present for its symbolism as well.

Also, I read here or in another GW forum where someone said that the deer are looking for the water content of the tender plants, and that putting a waterer out away from the garden was good protection. (Wish I could remember who posted that!)

I think the gift certificate idea is great. If they are avid outdoors people, try to find out where they shop locally for plants/gardening supplies. Then contact the store and see if they offer gift certificates. This way, you're supporting a local business and allowing your friends to pick up something they might be eyeing for some time.

While LLBean, Great Outdoors, Gander Mountain and all those other stores are great, the local shops need some love too!!

Yeah, I just wish I knew where they shopped. It's very far from where I live, they live near Erie but into New York, on the very western tip, near Jamestown. I have only gone there a few times and not to go shopping. I also am not sure what they need, garden-wise. Last time I was there it was maybe two years ago. I know they use their chainsaw all the time, since they heat with wood from their own woodlot. But I know the hubby keeps all the tools up to date so I doubt if they need a new one, or that I could afford to get them one. But I could contribute in the form of a gift certificate. I wonder if I could call the library or something . . .
I wanted to get them a nice picnic basket but I have not found one I like at all, I've shopped a couple of places locally.

I think a Visa or Amex gift card would be great and they can use it anywhere-even just to buy gas.
Then I would gift wrap it with a set of his and hers solar laterns-heck if you have a dicks sporting goods store they have all sorts of useful outdoors items....but go with the basic gift gard.

How about a brass or silver door knocker for their cabin door with their last name engraved on it? No storage issue with that, it'll hang on the front door and it's personalized which is always a good thing.

My MIL received one and it was really nice.

I was thinking about maybe one of those cool outdoor chines Susie! The have a big porch all along the front of the cabin. But if you don't like chimes, I'm sure they can be annoying. My neighbors have one I like, thankfully. That's what I gave as my last wedding gift for friends who had a lot of porch/deck space. I toyed with a wreath, which could be tossed in the compost when spent.
Maybe just a general visa gift card would be best. Where do you get those?

I had the same problem--my brother is getting married again and they have three homes between the two of them. I didn't think a blender would be appropriate. I bought 10 1# ribeye steaks. Will give in a styrofoam cooler, the steak is frozen and professionally wrapped, and will decorate the cooler with a bow in wedding colors. I thought it was such a good idea, I bought ten steaks for me and my husband!!!

You can pick up the generic (pre-paid) Visa cards almost anywhere now. Walmart, Target, some banks (call first), etc.

How about a small rustic basket with a nice bottle of wine, some of your homemade jams, pickles, artisan bread, etc. and a gift card to somewhere like Amazon. If you can't find something to spend money on there you really, truly don't need anything!! LOL

The basket could be "re-purposed" later as a planter, garden harvest basket, storage (hanging or otherwise if it has a handle).
The food goodies will be consumed and enjoyed (even if they preserve themselves, it's fun to try something new).
Jars can be re-used, re-purposed or re-cycled in any number of ways!

All that's left is the wine bottle.........and I'll bet they can come up with a creative way to deal with that!
