A/C forced air retrofit for old house, a few questions
Comments (14)Well I'm back, after having consulted with 2 geothermal installers. One is doing a complete load calculation and evaluation for geothermal versus an air-source heat pump, for us to compare against the quotes we have for just doing a/c. The other guy won't do a full analysis, including potential cost savings based on our individual usage patterns, without us paying a large fee for that service (US$700), but he was definitely there to try and sell it. Both gave a ballpark of the cost being about 3x (at least) of our a/c-only quotes, and both said that we'd have to have a split system (two systems?)--one in the basement going up to the first floor, and the split being in the attic coming down to the second floor. And because of that, the cost goes up. The first says we have enough room to trench, while the other says he prefers drilling vertically, saving horizontal loops for unlandscaped/non-lawn areas (like for brand-new construction). Both did say that our access in our unfinished basement and attic are generally good. We have one more home visit by another geo person, but I can already tell that my husband thinks it's way out of reach, though he loves the idea of geothermal. He's now back to thinking that we should just buy window a/c units, as the easiest and cheapest option (he also thinks it would be more energy-efficient if we only get 2 for the hottest 2 rooms). I guess I won't discount geo until I see a hard number from the first guy and compare it to the air-source heat pump option (which I had not considered, either). But there's the update, anyway. I'm very envious, Pyropaul, that your cost did not end up being prohibitive for your old house retrofit! Do you have a split system, too?...See Moreold house in questionable shape

Comments (16)I have never seen Renovation Magazine...would it be at Books a Million ? I should be done looking at pics but just found the work table island design 2 days ago!! I had to revise a lot of the design when we gutted the areas to the left and right of the gas/coal fireplace insert. It is 10ft up and 5 1/2 feet wide and 3 ft deep on both sides. We are planning the coffee bar to the far left and the double ovens to the far right of these spaces. Then the areas adjacent to the now showing chimney will be open up to the ceiling and have art work from our hometown, New Orleans , hung there. We are going to use very subtle track lighting since I hate recessed cans and pendants won't work except over the island. We are using the porter pendant that has a counterweight so I can raise and lower as needed. I just loved looking at JG's book. I did borrow his design for a platerack and his wood countertops. Also we will have a wooden slatted drain shelf over the soapstone sink, that only Europeans do. Anyway, I run on and on about this. I can hardly wait til it is usable. The appliances will be here 7/18. Did you see my demolition pics I posted on the kitchen forum? It was last weekend. They are still around back a few pages. GOOD LUCK !!...See MoreOld house money
Comments (24)Marilyn, you are such a good person in so many ways. Your elderly gentlemen has benefited for 7 whole years from your kindness and attention. I'm sure he appreciates all you have done for him. As for the crook who worked on your house, fouled up much of it and stole your $8,000 -- well, he is VERY lucky you have chosen not to prosecute him. I'm glad to know you are getting your $8K back, and the carpenter will have to deal directly with your mutual friend regarding his payback to her. Based on what I've read it will take her years to get that money from him -- if ever. [Rhetorical question] What's left is what is in place to prevent him from doing to future customers what he has done to you....See Morejoe_mn
