Anyone in the Denver/Colorado springs area

Well Family road trip here we go!! We are heading out with our camper to travel to Colorado and a side trip to Denver. Any must see things in the area, or places to eat. Remember we have a 7,5,3 and 2 year old so need to be family friendly. Hope to see some CFers along the way.

Hi, Stacie!

Not sure of your route but if you're dropping into Denver from I-25 make a pit stop at Johnson Corner for a stretch & CINNAMON ROLLS...they are awesome! The kids will go crazy (so will you & DH). :)

Another thought...Estes Park is a fun drive from Denver & there are pony rides for the kids & fun shopping for you.

Just outside Estes Park is Rocky Mountain National Park & Trail Ridge Road. Every time I've made that drive I've seen big horn sheep, elk, & deer. The kids should love the big horns making their way along the rocky cliffs.

There are also lots of places for picnics, etc. It's a beautiful drive along the Continental Divide (highest auto road in America). They've had TONS of snow this year so depending on when your trip is...check to make sure the road's open. I'm sure the kids would love it...ours sure did when they were little.

South of Denver is Red Rocks Park. Beautiful! The kiddos are too young to appreciate the geological stuff but I think they would enjoy running around & climbing something safe for tykes. Also, check for concerts at the amphitheatre at Red Rocks.

I'll try to think of other Colorado kiddo stuff.

Lazygardens: Thanks for information, this is the sequence of what I am going to do -- when I wrote on the way I am going to kill my existing lawn I did not mean the steps in sequence, just overall steps :) Also, I am planning to cover the seed with about 1/8" of the top soil to get a better soil contact and protect it from birds. Am I making a mistake here ? Is there any DIY method to compact this top thin layer. I am doing a trial seeding of only about 400 sq feet and don't want to rent a roller just for that. Biglumber: I am actually torn between Ephraim and Sodar (streambank) for the new lawn -- Ephraim gets a lot of praise in 'Xeriscape Colorado' book (chapter 5, grass): http://books.google.com/books?id=m0QyikM-wAwC&pg=PP1&dq=xeriscape+colorado#v=onepage&q=&f=false I am leaning towards Streambank for following reasons: 1. Streambank is a native grass, Ephraim is introduced. 2. Streambank is strongly rhizomatous, Ephraim is weakly rhizomatous and only with sufficient water. 3. Based on what I've read Streambank seems to be more drought telorant, Ephraim needs more water but probably not by much. 4. Ephraim goes dormant much faster during hot dry spells. Ephraim pros: 1. Cheaper seeds (half the price of Streambank). 2. Easier to establish. 3. Lawn seems to be of better quality, AVSeeds recommended Ephraim over Streambank for lawn, but I am not sure about the qualifications of the person I spoke with. Can you post a picture of your Ephraim lawn, I (and I am sure many others) would love to see it :) Bpgreen: In one of your post I've read that you got a better results when seeding Streambank that you put in the freezer before planting, this is also backed up by some USDA document I came across when researching. Here I am, finally! Sorry I never got around to taking any pictures; maybe this year, though the trees I have aren't all that impressive. Spring time in the Rockies, not much money for more conifers this year - spent too much last year with mixed results. Of the dwarf conifers I planted, almost half of them had died by the end of the summer, and one more succumbed over the winter. :-( This is a list of the ones that I actually planted last spring: Abies balsamea 'Nana' Juniperus communis 'Kalebab' Picea abies 'Tompa' Picea pungens 'Mile Up 92' (a gift from Nate (sluice) Picea pungens 'The Blues' Picea glauca (probably mariana??) 'Echiniformis' Pinus aristata Bristlecone Pine (a gift from treebarb) Pinus banksiana 'Angel' Pinus banksiana 'Rochester Pendula' Pinus banksiana 'Tucker's Dwarf' Pinus contorta 'Chief Joseph' Pinus mugo 'Zundert' Pinus x schwerrnii 'Wiethorst' Thuja occidentalis 'Little Champion' Thuja occidentalis 'Sherwood Frost' Thuja occidentalis 'Zmatlik' Tsuga canadensis 'Moon Frost' These are the ones that are still alive and seem to be doing well: Juniperus communis 'Kalebab' Pinus banksiana 'Rochester Pendula' Pinus banksiana 'Angel' Pinus contorta 'Chief Joseph' Pinus mugo 'Zundert' Thuja occidentalis 'Little Champion' Thuja occidentalis 'Sherwood Frost' Tsuga canadensis 'Moon Frost' Pinus banksiana 'Tucker's Dwarf' is still alive but doesn't look all that good, lots of die back which doesn't bode well for such a tiny plant... Perhaps I should have kept it in the pot for another year. I will try to replace the 'Weithorst' as it is really a wonderful looking tree; still can't find a source other than Klehms Song Sparrow Farms, though. Since the one I got from them died (of course, wasn't my fault, right?!?) I am somewhat reluctant to buy another one from them... Is that foolish? But, since they seem to be the only source here in the USA, I will no doubt try again - after all, the 'Moon Frost' that I got from them is doing fine. So, that's my sad tale! Not much encouragement for trying more conifers this year, so I guess it is a good thing that I don't have the $$, although I did buy a cheapy from Home Depot this weekend, a Picea abies 'Reflexa' (of course, incorrectly labeled as a 'Pendula.') Hang in there. They will update their events calendar by March. Our growing season, planting really doesn't begin until mid May. Blooming depends upon weather which can be irratic in CO. The first week of June may be a bit scance for tours, but there are many public gardens to visit even without formal programs going on. One of our GW members in Colorado Springs hosts a tour of her garden through a local chapter. And there are a number of others in the Denver area. I can't remember when they had the tours going on. The Botonic Gardens in Denver is a must while visiting. You can get a better take on plantings/growth habits/blooming in our area during June. roof ice damming in Denver area?

Whooo, My DH and I are tired!! Both of us spent a good part of the day yesterday (from about 7am to about 2:30pm) planning what to do about the ice dams on the back side of the house, and then taking action (due to the drip in the kitchen, we felt we needed to do something quickly at least there). I'll start by saying that my husband is very handy, careful, and knowledgeable when it comes to things like this - otherwise, I wouldn't have let him attempt this! So what he ended up doing was using a weed burning torch (has a metal housing around the end where the flame comes out) to melt the ice on the edge of the roof. He had to be on a ladder to do it, but fortunately no mishaps! The ice was about a 9" or so wide band along the edge, and several inches deep! He melted it as much as he could without actually getting down to the shingles, and then chopped through the remaining thickness to knock it off the roof. It looked to him that the gutter guards the previous owner installed were possibly the primary cause of the ice dam - the guard kind of tips up slightly, so he's guess is that they hindered the flow of melt from going off the roof. Great for keeping leaves out of the gutter, but not great for climates that get snow and ice!! David - we did pick up a roof & gutter de-icing cable kit, but the instructions said not to use it for melting existing ice as it's designed only to make a channel for ice as it forms to allow a path for it to drip through - might have been ok/worked, but we opted to not try using it at this point. But definitely will install it after all this is gone so hopefully prevent this from happening again! My job was shoveling snow so we could get the ladder close and have some walking room, hand him things, and to keep a close eye on what he was doing for any signs of anything going wrong! I also used our makeshift roof snow removal tool (no one had the real thing, so we had to improvise) to try and get some of the snow off 1 ft or so from the edge. I did get some off, but thought it was a whole lot more than what it end up being when I look at the roof from an upstairs window - not worth it IMO for how difficult it was to maneuver the pole that far away and get the right angle, etc.!! Maybe a real roof snow tool would be better, but not so sure. So no more drip in the kitchen - yeah!!! Now if mother nature will just gives us more melting in between cold/snow days, it would be sooo nice. Maybe a bit on Monday, and then Thurs. on is looking good. I have a hanging planter on our front porch that says it all this morning about how this weather has been here lately!

I have a Daughter that lives in the area.

I highly recommend Red Rocks Park and if you can catch a concert so much the better! Rocky Mountain National Park is always a nice ride. Ditto to what tricia is recommending!

Food wise we really enjoyed Yak and Yettie (foreign food to me), but was good! Vesta Dipping Room is also nice. You could choose different sauces to dip your food into. It may be a little difficult for the younger children.

I wish I could remember the name of the Cuban coffee shop we stopped at. They had the best coffee and cuban toast! I'll see if my daughter remembers the name of it. It's a real hole in the wall but so good!

Stacie, I called my DIL's brother who has grandkids close to the age of your children. His suggestions for the Denver area for kidlet fun activities were:

1.Water World http://www.waterworldcolorado.com/

2. Casa Bonita, one of the two places I thought of also. It's a themed restaurant with indoor pools and performers who high dive off of cliffs. The food is barely mediocre Mexican, but I can promise your kids will remember it all there lives - at least my now 42 year old son and his friends remember going there as kids decades ago. 3. The Children's Museum - This was the second place I thought of and it would be a lot of fun for all your children. http://www.mychildsmuseum.org/

4. White Fence Farm Restaurant and much more. A huge place with a farm petting zoo, live music much of the time and definitely kid friendly. I've never been there but it was one of the top suggestions from my DIL's brother. http://whitefencefarm-co.com/Template.php?-p=Home&-rid=579

5. The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo - smaller than the Denver Zoo but a fun thing to do in Colorado Springs and very interactive for your children. There is a tram and a train ride. http://www.cmzoo.org/

My cousins in Denver have a chain of deli's called Tony's Market, and Chef Mick is my first cousin once removed - his mother is my first cousin, of which I only have four living. I need to make a trip to Denver myself to see them - it's been decades!

Awwww... you bring back so many memories! I grew up in the Denver area and lived there 35 years. Left in 1984 and haven't been back in decades. Guess I love FL too much now. Oh well.

Have fun! I do recommend Red Rocks, Estes Park, Rocky Mountain National Park, etc. All beautiful, with skies the color of the Colorado columbine.
