Monitor died?

I think my monitor just died. I have 2 accounts one my computer. I had left the keyboard for a few minutes, came back, screen showing to choose which account I wanted, touched the mouse, heard a faint click/squeak sound.....monitor went black. Power light is on. I have a KVM but unplugged from the KVM and connected directly to PC and "nothing".. I have also connected it to another computer and get the same thing.

I shut everyting down and unplugged and waited a few minutes......still nothing..

It is a Samsung SyncMaster 170MP. Of course, can't get the menu to appear. The source is set at "PC" as apposed to other choices that I have (V1, V2, or TV) So that shouldn't be the problem.

OH LORDY...don't want to have to purchase a new monitor...

Some of the Samsung Monitors have multi year warranties, maybe 3 or 5 years. Be sure to check that first. It does sound like it's dead tho. Good luck.

Thanks...yup...it has a 3 year warranty....I'm about a year out of warranty.....guess I go monitor shopping..anyone have any recommendation? Any deals out there?

Basically you could just empty the My Documents folder and most will be removed. However you would also need to check the genealogy program as perhaps that stores the data within the program itself. To do either or both right click on Start and click Explore. Now if you look on the left side you will see My Documents near the top, click on this to highlight and the contents appear on the right side of your screen. Assuming you want to remove everything click the first item on the right side, hold down the Shift button and tap the End button to highlight everything. Right click on the highlighted stuff and click Delete in the pop up. To remove only some hold down the CTRL button while you click to highlight things you need removed then right click to delete. For the genealogy program look down the left side for Program Files, click the plus sign beside that to open the sub folders beneath it. Look down through those for the genealogy folder, click to highlight. Then on the right side do as stated above to remove any or all of it.

Janette, I'd call your purchase a good buy. In this very small town, we don't have many places for emergency shopping. My Dell monitor died last summer on an early Friday evening when I had invoices to do (and mail the following morning), several maps to scan/print. That same Acer monitor from my local ISP/computer shop was $239.04 with sales tax. It's been fine, no problems in the few months that I've had it. If it does just last a very few years, I'd feel better about it if I had paid $90 like you :)

Jean, sad news on your monitor but it gives you the opportunity to go LCD wide screen LOL.

A word of caution you may not have thought of. If you go LCD and use the digital connection if your video card supports it you will be stuck without your KVM switch. KVM for digital is extremely expensive, in fact I have had to switch off one of my computer for that very reason. Cheaper to buy an second screen than buy a digital KVM switch. I have managed to learn to live with just one computer plus my wife's and it is not too difficult.

Got an LG wide screen LCD....works with my KVM switch too...now to get a different router that works. (daughter has one I can use). Wish me luck... :)

Yes, your KVM switch is still good as long as you use the analog mode. However, down the road you may elect to replace the video card - or the entire computer and have a digital connection. That is when the KVM becomes obsolete. just a point to bear in mind for future reference.

I have the different router, so I can get all 3 computers online at once. Heaven knows why I would want to...just 'cause I can, I guess...LOL...Well, hubby is online with the laptop right now...so I guess "it's a good thing"...

You had to shell out some cash for the LCD monitor, but the reduces power needs of the newer technology will save on your electrical costs over the life of the monitor.

I also prefer having my brain cells next to an LCD rather then the high voltage of a CRT monitor. Have you ever placed an AM radio next to a CRT Monitor. Nothing but static. The LCDs use less power and give off much less electrical discharge.

johnkr, you're right about AM radio--during the day. But evenings & night it works fine in same location. Any idea why? Sandy

$254 including tax...didn't think that was bad. Hate to say what I paid for the Samsung LCD 3Â½ years ago.

How big is it? I just paid $229 for a 19 inch, and its analog.

What make and model Jane? Are you sure your monitor is only analog? Perhaps you are using the analog side because your video card does not support DVI and only offers an analog connection.
