Acer monitor

Hi guys and gals,

I have another question.

I bought an Acer 17" LCD monitor on Black Friday. It is model AL1716W A (or Ab). Original cost was about $180. After discount and rebate it will cost about $90. My question --- was this a good buy? I'm not a gamer or heavy user. Just tired of the space the CRT monitor takes up, but I don't want something that will not provide good service.

If you decide not to send it to Mikie I am sure you will enjoy it.

If you currently use a 17 inch CRT monitor you will see the difference in height. This is a 16 x 10 configuration compared to the CRT at 5 x 4. These are the height by width ratios.

It also uses less desktop space which is always nice.

Make and model may be as important - if not more so. Because if things go wrong you will be returning it to the maker or their representative rather than the store who might hang on to it before shipping it back. Mostly we never have to return things but there are instances when that becomes necessary. Remember too that your old CRT monitor is a 5 X 4 screen but all the new 'widescreen' ones are 16 X 9 ratio. Just something to bear in mind as you look around. I quite like Samsung and Acer these days, Acer seem to have improved a lot. I liked Viewsonic till my daughter had to return hers for repair. Took 10 weeks and three used replacements all older than her original monitor before she got a good monitor.

I have an acer 19" that I got from buy.com for a very good price, I just saw a 20" acer for $179. You want to make sure it has the proper connections for the type of monitor your pc can take, analog or digital or both. So if your pc takes only analog for example be sure you get a monitor that also has analog as an option. Some have both. One of the reasons I like Acer was it has a 3 yr warranty. Some monitors have speakers in them some don't, mine does not but I have a speaker setup on the desk so I did not need monitor speakers. Some have a built in usb hub which is a nice added bonus. Buy.com does have a couple of the Acers 20" listed at $189. I would go with a name brand. Most of the name brands will pretty much have close to the same specs. Be sure if you buy it from one of the online stores to search google for codes or coupons, I can usually always find a few for buy.com especially for new customers.

try Right clicking on the Internet Explorer 8 Icon then click properties. Click the down arrow next to Run to select maximized. click apply to save the change. it should be automatically maximized when you open it. another way to do it is to open the Ie window use those arrows to drag it out to max, get to the desired size, then do file -> exit. It should then startup at that size from now on. Do NOT close it by clicking the red x you must use the file , exit close. (or Click the big E at the very top left of the IE screen. Click on Close.)

Do a google search for online virus scans, there should be a couple ie TrendMicro etc. Run that. Spybot Search and Destroy is another good spyware utility. Also search for SpywareBlaster, download and install it. It runs in the background and stops most adware from loading. Of course you must update for new signatures every couple of days to get the new settings then "enable all protection" after getting the new sigs. Adaware SE personal and Spybot S&D you must update before using each time

I see them on-sale at Circuit City here for $159.
ACA AL1716FB anyhow. Can't quickly find any reviews.

Acer makes OK stuff.

I was afraid that for a $90 end-price, it would not be a good one. I've hooked it up now and it seems to be working fine.

Janette, I'd call your purchase a good buy. In this very small town, we don't have many places for emergency shopping. My Dell monitor died last summer on an early Friday evening when I had invoices to do (and mail the following morning), several maps to scan/print.

That same Acer monitor from my local ISP/computer shop was $239.04 with sales tax. It's been fine, no problems in the few months that I've had it. If it does just last a very few years, I'd feel better about it if I had paid $90 like you :)

morz8, Thanks for your response. I'm happy to hear you've had a good experience with it. I was a little hesitant because of what I've heard about flicker, etc, but so far it has been fine. I love the extra desk space it gives me.

This is the first time I have ventured out on Black Friday but I'm glad I did. I hate crowds, but I hit it just about right.

I've used an Acer 17 inch LCD monitor for over a year and had no problems at all. LCDs use less power then CRTs, so your electric bill will be a little cheaper. They also lack the electrical buildup commonly found in a CRT monitor, which is probably better for you brain cells while your setting in front of the monitor.

Very good monitor and a great price. You should have zero regrets on that purchase.
