About to break ground and pulled the plug on building

Oh, I'm so sad. So much work with the architect and here on GW to get things just so and now we have pulled the plug. :(

We were set to break ground in a few weeks and then we had the land survey done on our lot and the dirt work ended up being $36K instead of $15K (our builder thought $15K was a high estimate!)! We have a low lot and we needed to bring in a lot of dirt. We purposely had this estimated on site by several knowledgeable contractors, one that built next door, before we bought the lot and it still came in astronomically higher than any estimate. Then our builder told us that our materials have risen quite a bit just since our bid 4 months ago. So, although, a difficult decision, we decided to hold off, at least for this year. Our house itself was at the top of the budget we wanted to spend and these additional costs have just sent it over the top.

We own our lot outright so we will still have that, but it is sad that we may never build our house, unless construction costs come down or something. Our house was designed for that lot, so if we sell the lot eventually, we probably will never use the plans. :(

Just sad tonight...
