Charlottesville, VA ---- any CFers in the area???

I may be spending some time there in the near future and was just wondering if any of you live near there. I'll probably have some free time to meet up for dinner or something, and will probably have some questions about the area. I'm not sure yet when I'll be out there, but it will be in the next few months.

As my handle suggests, I live in the Charlottesville VA area. I don't know of any other CFers around here, (and I'm more a KFer than a CFer, even though my kitchen remodel has been pretty much done for a couple of years) but I know there were a few other C'Villian's on the KF in the past, so there might be others on the CF that I don't know of.

Hi Bob and Dlynn,
I'm not from the area yet, but I'm working on it! We are breaking ground on our home in Lexington (about 1 hour from Cville) this week!!
We have a rental there but are spending most of our time in Louisiana taking care of our home here while it is still on the market.
Would love to get together when we're there.
Bob.... any chance you used soapstone on your kitchen remodel? I'm searching for someone in the area who has some soapstone experience.

Too early yet. Here near Richmond (also Z-7) I have very good success planting most all fall crops during the 3rd week in August (or about 7-8 weeks prior to first avg frost date). The weekend of Aug 23rd seems perfect. The plantings includes Cabbage, broc, cauliflower, Brussel Spts all from transplants, and Direct seeding of carrots, turnips, beets, kohlrabi, collards, and kale. Spinach can also be planted by Oct 1st for an extra early spring harvest (easily overwinters). I've not planted lettuce in the fall but I suspect that mid-Sept would be better since it germinates better in cool weather. bart1, check Lowes, HD, or a Southern States outlet by mid/late August. A tip on buying Broc transplants - buy the smallest, youngest looking plants as older looking ones may button-up on you. Avoid any broc transplants with "woody" looking stems too. Get them as fresh as possible because these places rarely take good care of them leading to stresses that cause "buttoning-up" - resulting in tiny heads. I always have better broc & cabbage production when fall planted and the carrots are always much sweeter in the fall and keep well in the cold ground thru Jan. But keep the carrots well weeded and thinned to 2" apart. Happy Harvest!

Hi there all Virginians. I have been keeping busy in the garden this year. I have built 7 new beds in my back yard and am now working on 3 other. Most of them are shade or part shade. I only have one full sun garden and it is popping this year. It is super hot in that bed though. My mom calls it my cactus bed... I have no cacti in it so imagine that. My red yucca is blooming in that bed. It has a beautiful salmon colored stalk and flowers. If anyone has a super hot/super dry spot in their garden then i definately recommend that plant. It literally is in bloom from May to Nov here in Central VA, with a 5 foot stalk. I tried to grow Lupine in this garden but it was not having that. I did not double check the web, but something tells me that Lupine does not like temps over 100 like I had in this garden a few times this May already. I have moved that plant to my part shade garden and it perked up by the next morning. I planted a large star aloe and some hannibals dwarf crinum in a pot together and they do not seem to enjoy the exact same light conditions. Live and learn I guess. So I will be redoing that planting. Does anyone know how to keep big clumps of Achillea from getting that dent in the middle which looks like a cat sat in it. It has happened to all the large specimens that I have seen this year. My phlox in my "cactus garden" is now about 2 feet tall and I have already trimmed of the top 3 inches to make it poof. Does anyone grow Delphinum as a perenial here in VA. I have only tried once a few years ago but then I moved so I am not sure if they made it. I drove by but didn't see it. Anyway I can go on forever regarding my plants and other plants in general so I will stop now. This is a great thread. I'm going to print it to plan some garden adventures since I will probably skip my annual trek to the open house at Tufton/Monticello Center for Historic Plants. Another great nursery near Richmond is Dirty Hands. The are out on Midlothian Turnpike and have some nice perennials and a very creative display. That's what I like about Sneed's too - very garden like in the display. I prefer the smaller east end Stranges to the big west end one. For me, it is a lot closer, they seem to have better sales, and the people are always really freindly and helpful. One guy even followed me around with a flat and held my annual selection for me while I carried my weary toddler - now that's customer service! Andre Viettes is gorgeous and pleasant to visit. I've been meaning to go to Sherando's too - rose buff that I am. Personally, I find the new Great Big Greenhouse to be a bit overwelming. It is so big and rather pricey. For water gardens, the Ashland Berry Farm is nice. Is the statuary place ya'll are talking about Harpers? I bought stuff from them at the Maymont F&G show and wanted to go out to their place. I bought a few plants from Lazy S at the recent Ginter sale and they really do have an extraordinary selection.

The Invisible One is finally reporting in. After last SundayÂs gathering, The Bug got me down, eliminating my ability to say anything the least bit witty, not that I could have matched the others at that, anyway. DH and I enjoyed everyoneÂs company immensely. It was wonderful to dine among GW celebrities Igloochic (the delightful, devoted mother of adorable Jesse -- I hope he is doing much better), Buehl (who I later realized is the Kitchen Forum FAQ compiler/poster), and cooperbailey (with whom I had several things in common). It would be fun to meet more GW folks, whenever and wherever. We are in Towson, MD, so I expect weÂll be headed south when it happens. Some have pronounced our kitchen "finished." Now, we all know that "done" is a relative term. I hastily took some pictures of our kitchen before last weekÂs dinner meeting, and the only thing really missing is a window treatment. However, I need to straighten up the counters, find the best angles, and gather all the spec details before preserving our kitchen for posterity in the Finished Kitchens Blog. That new project is definitely on my Someday List Â another relative term. :-) Alice

I did not use soapstone, but I do know some people in the KF in the Cville area who used soapstone, and one person IRL who DIY'ed a soapstone counter.

Actually, just south of Charlottesville, is the Alberene Soapstone Company, which I think is the only remaining active soapstone quarry in the United States. They can either do the fabrication themselves, or work with a local fabricator, or sell you the slab and let you DIY. The KF person from the area used the stone fabricator I used, and said she was very happy with the results.

Thanks Bob! I'd love to know the fabricators name.

I went to Alberene Soapstone. Loved the place, friendly folks and the look of the stone. BUT the samples I got were so soft that just gently sliding a coffee cup across them left big marks. I don't mind a little patina, but that was a bit much!

Dlynn, are you moving to the area?

My fabricator was the Albemarle Countertop Company. The really did quality work and not too long after they did my kitchen they were upgrading to better equipment, so they should be even better now.
