You need to start over.

And are you sure you bought a CD-RW and not just a CD-R? Also, you can only re-write a CD so many times before it becomes corrupt.

The files you originally wrote to CD are protected and probably "read only", also check what preferences you have checked on the Nikon and ScanDisk card (for what it's worth, I have two Nikon D80 and a couple ScanDisk cards-not to mention at least 4 other digital cameras and enough SD/flash cards to flll a landfill-dating back close to 10 years).

Your only choice is to download them to your desktop (or someplace easily remembered for a minute) and rewrite the CD without any read/write restrictions, which can be found in properties.

Also, are you deleting the files on your camera and SD card when you download to CD or your computer? If not, you have probably run out of space.

Another thing, that Nikon "Picture Project" software, if you are using that, is a pain and not worth installing. It could be contributing to your problems.

What program "thinks" it's your default photo editing program? That could also be causing problems. You say you are using Olympus software but a Nikon camera, did you load the Nikon software too?

All these camera manufacturers have their own proprietary software (and websites), you don't need it or want it. It's better to go out and buy a copy of photoshop than have a bunch of proprietary photo editing programs on your computer, unless you know how to over-ride them, including Windows Picture and Fax program.

It is definitely a CD-RW and new. This is the first I downloaded photos to it, and they are not that large, and I only did three. It was so simple before with my old camera and computer. I would download a photo on to a CD, and if a better one came along I would delete the less pleasing one, and add the new one.

I did check my camera and the card and neither had the protection from delete activated, but it does tell me when I go to delete on the CD that it is a 'read only'.

I do have the Nikon software loaded, but I didn't like it so I installed my old Olympus software that is simple to use. I am going to uninstall the Nikon software. Ever since I got the new camera and computer I am having problems that I think should be simple to figure out. I guess I do not like change. The new computer has a DVD burner also, and I have not really got the hang of that, either.

I will also check into Photoshop.

Try right clicking on the picture you want to delete. Click on 'properties' on the context menu and at the bottom of the properties dialog box remove the check from the read only box.

I did as you suggested, but it said there was an error concerning attributes, and it would not let me remove the check mark in 'read only'. I have never had this problem with my old camera and computer. Right now, to me, newer isn't always better. I upgraded with both the computer and camera, but I have had more problems, and right now the bad seems to out weigh the good. And I do not think I will be getting Photoshop in the near future. I checked the cost, and it is to expensive for me since this is only for hobby purposes. I don't know anything about it, and if I am having so much trouble with something I thought I was familiar with, just imagine what would happen with Photoshop. : )

Each of us buys our equipment to use as we see fit so feel free to ignore the following entirely if you wish.

You might find life so much easier if you used the hard drive on your computer to store and manipulate your photos rather than a CD. To me a CD is used for storage and back up rather than replacing the hard drive. You say the computer is new so I guess it has a 250 gig hard drive, ample space to play endlessly. Then as you assemble a larger inventory of keepers you can burn those to CD's for protection.

I do agree with Tuezday's suggestion above that all camera makers software is bloatware and should be avoided like the plague. You could try the excellent free program called Irfanview, I have put the download link below. Be sure to grab the plug ins too. It is not a hard program to iunderstand and does all basic editing things.

As I said, this is not meant to be mean spirited but you seem to be fighting with something when you could be enjoying the camera and computer.

Ditto owbist....you have chosen a troublesome procedure for an otherwise simple task. CD's/DVD's are very poor substitutes for hard drives. They are wonderful for backup, storage, transport. Lousy for add/delete. Really inappropriate for the purpose IMHO.

Why not just upload your pictures to your computer using XP and saving them to 'My Pictures?' That's what I do. Very simple, XP has a Wizard which lets you choose to download to a folder or to just view them. I look at them and get rid of the ones I don't want and save the others to a folder on My Pics.

I wouldn't use any camera software. Just use your computer. Then you can save them to a CD later, if you want.

Thanks everyone. All suggestions are appreciated, and thank you for not making me feel like a dunce. The light bulb has finally come on. I now understand that what I thought I did with my old computer I could not have done at all. I finally got to talk to the person who built my computer and he said what you have all told me. Work with my photos until they suit me, and then use my computer to hold my photos in a folder, and once I know what I want to save for sure, download them on to a CD. I really have not given my computers programs a chance, but I will. I was just so sure of what I thought I had done in the past.
I really appreciate that you kept trying to get it through my thick head that CDs/DVDs are for storage not manipulation. Jane
