Making Copies of Photo CD's

I am a computer dummy. I have a ACER VERITON with Windows XP Professional installed. I have tried to make copies of a WalMart photo CD and I can not figure out how to do it simple.

Can anyone give me some simple directions.

My computer has a DVD/CD player/burner installed.

it may be the cd you are trying to copy, I know the walmart photo cd's that I have had in the past were not always copyable they contain special coding or something that can make it hard if not impossible to copy sometimes.

but with most photo cd's you just put the cd in the cd drawer and it will pop up a box asking what you want to do, you want to copy to disc, or you can just drag and drop the pics from the disc to a folder on your pc. Right click on the picture itself and you should have some options like save as or copy to you can use those also to tell it where to put the picture.

this is the type of situation I have run into with the walmart cd, this is a quote from a website.
"WalMart Photo and also Kodak photo processing--available at nearly any supermarket, drug store, etc.--offer to put your photos on a CD along with developed prints. But, included with the CD images of your photos is proprietary photo/album management software. The photo/albun software seems to be pushed on the consumer to make it his primary photo management software program. These programs include a (re)ORDER PRINTS and/or ENLARGEMENTS function. The objective is to cause the consumer to keep using only THAT photo processing source and photo management program on his PC!

Either the Walmart or the Kodak software MUST be loaded to even view the photos on the respective CD or to copy the images to your PC's hard drive. Without loading the proprietary software, you cannot view, edit or copy your photos! "

I refuse to load any extra software on my pc if I can not do it with the programs I have then too bad. I will not risk putting spyware on my pc.

I fully agree with Ravencajun's feelings about programmes that trap you into using "their" utilities - especially if they are trying to take my money!

If your Photo Cds are locked in to WalMart or Kodak's system how about trying this as a possible work around - I don't have any of their CDs so I cannot say for certain if it will work:

Download and install the last freeware version of FastStone Capture (version 5.3). It is an excellent tool that enables you to easily capture any part of the screen.

Run FastStone Capture and, in the "Settings" section of the Settings Menu, find the shortcut keys that trigger the type of capture that you want - I would guess that it would either be the "active window" or a box that you draw around the area of interest.

Then, while FastStone Capture is still running, start your Photo CD programme and see if you can capture an image. If successful, then you can choose to save it as a .bmp file and the quality, under normal viewing and printed photo up to A4 size, will probably be indistinguishable from the original.

If it works and you need to edit, rotate or resize the image then use another excellent free programme PhotoFiltre (version 6.3.7) from http://photofiltre.free.fr/frames_en.htm

To complete my suggestions, FastStone Viewer is my favourite photo viewing programme http://www.faststone.org/download.htm

I have all my photos on CD's. I scanned all the photos into folders, topic, year, celebration, whatever and burned them. I made two copies. One is in the safe deposit box at the bank, the other in my house. I only scan onto CD-R's. I find that they are tolerated by other computers and as long as I burn them as jpeg, I can view them on the TV thru my DVD player. (Your DVD player has to be able to project the jpeg images) The cost of CD-R's is so low, in fact if you watch the ads, you can often get them free after rebates. I often send CD's to family and friends after a get-together. The cost is so low. I try to use brands that I have had good experience with. It is also very helpful to have dates on the images, at least some of them, to stop the arguments of 'when was that taken' as you view them. I do have a software program that helps me organize the pictures and allows me to insert text on the images. Images on CD's last virtually forever. Storing them on other media may not be. It took a long time to sort thru the old photos and scan them into the computer, but the knowledge that fire, storm, whatever cannot take these memories is a good reward.

A USB drive is one of those small devices that you can plug into your USB port. You could also use a SD card (like digital cameras use) and put it in a card reader that goes into a USB port. You just click and drag your files onto the USB Drive - these are also called "thumb drives" or "flash drives" or "flash media". They would not be the ideal solution for long term storage. What is the age of your computer. Most computers now come with some type of burner. I have had mine since 2001 and it was more of an "option" back then. I have installed a DVD burner and find that quite useful, as DVD's store much more data. You can get burners that plug into the USB drives also.

A couple ... 1) find the program you want to use for digital photo storage. On Windows, the default is either Explorer or Photo Editor. On Macintosh, it's iPhoto. They're OK, but there are better programs out there for not a lot of money that can do a better job of cataloging and, for some, photo manipulation (fixes "redeye", crops, does some contrast alteration, etc.). I would hit sites like cnet.com, pcworld.com, download.com, and maybe even the Web site for your brand of digital camera to see what is recommended. There also is some software which can identify duplicate images and manage those so you don't drown in four versions of the same picture with the same name but a different file-access timestamp. 2) Think seriously about how you want to store your photos. Better digital cameras have a picture format called RAW that usually is proprietary by brand. The nice thing about RAW is that it lets you use the picture like you just took it -- all the picture information is there so you don't end up dumbing down a picture that already has been compressed (this leads to jaggies and noise). The bad thing is that Nikon's and Canon's and Olympus' and Pentax's RAW are all different, so you can end up locked into a lousy storage application because it's all there is which will read your particular version of RAW. Better for long-term storage is JPEG or TIFF, both of which have been around for years and likely will be supported by many programs in the future. You can't modify JPEGS very much without seriously degrading picture quality, but to store pictures you don't plan to modify, it's good. 3) However you assemble your pictures, make sure you have a backup! The cheapest way to get one probably is to buy an external hard drive for your computer and periodically back up your picture files to it. Then disconnect it from your computer and take the drive someplace else: to your safe-deposit box, to your desk at work, to a kid's or parent's house -- anywhere away from your computer and, ideally, away from the elements (don't store it in a frozen garage or musty basement). Geographical dispersion is the key. You don't want your copy right next to the original. If you have a Web site and a big enough hosting package, you could move the files there, too. But that can be time-consuming and could exhaust your storage allotment quickly. Hope this helps....

Just my opinion but... I think that referring to a book or binder is a lot faster than sticking a CD into the computer, pulling it up and than rifling through the CD looking for pages that may or may not be as organized as they need to be. Even if organized, it would still be a matter of the scanning and then looking through the scanned and digitized pages one at a time. If I were you, I'd spend the time typing the recipes -- yes, one by one -- into one of the great many recipe programs. I like MasterCook but there is one that has been posted here that is a web link for a free download. Once the recipes are in a recipe organizing program, you can sort them, combine them, print them, find them, search them by ingredients or pretty much anything else, menus and much more.
