Hi Seattlemike, I looked at the specs for your printer and it appears to connect via USB or parellel to your desktop as a standard setup. It does have an optional network adapter/print server. Does the printer have this optional feature (does it have a port for the ethernet cable?). Are you currently having issues with the desktop staying online? I'm trying to ascertain why the tech wants you to go wireless when you have the router a few inches from the desktop. Ideally, you would connect the modem to the router, then the desktop to the router via ethernet cable, the laptop connects to the router via wireless and then there's the printer. If it has only USB or parellel connection, you will have to connect it to the desktop, then share it on the network to enable printing from the laptop (the desktop must be online and active for this to work). If it has the optional ethernet port/print server then it also can be connected to the router and given a static (assigned) IP address. In every case, you will need to connect the printer directly to the laptop in order to install the driver, then disconnect from the laptop and place the printer in it's permanent position. After all of the physical connections are made, you'll need to syncronize the network. This entails powering off everything (usually requires electrical power to be disconnected, some items do have on/off switches) and bringing them online in a specific order. Starting with the modem, plug it into power and watch the lights until the 'online' light becomes stable. Next will be the router, plug it into electrical power and wait 2 minutes for the router to obtain it's IP address from the modem. Now turn on the printer and computers, order is not important here. Everything should be online at this point. Please make sure that you utilize wireless security on the router to protect your network especially since you will have to enable file and printer sharing on the desktop in order to allow printing from the laptop, leaving your desktop wide open to intrusion. The router has several options, WEP, WPA, WPA2 and WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK. You will need to see which of those options that your laptop's wireless adapter utilizes. sure you can put it on a flash drive or a usb external drive and move it to your netbook, I do have an external cd burner drive but have not used it with my netbook I have done everything using my usb thumb flash drives. I have decided to use the free open office on my netbook and just downloaded it right to the netbook from online, it does all I need as an office suite.

My windows 7 did not come with an email program. I just looked through my programs and there is something called windows mail, but there is no email software in the folder. I had to download my email and it had that huge tool bar on top like word has and I hated it. I finally set up the quick access bar and that worked for me. A few months back I reformatted and could not find what I had been using. I found windows live mail and it was very much like OE. I can add background music in it.

from the way he describes it, he is using a VOIP phone to get dialtone over the internet, NOT traditional POTS service. a NID only applies to POTS service and certain other telco supplied special circuits. since he is using his internet jack, i assume he has FTTC or FTTP or at the very least a dry pair DSL service. none of these require a dedicated NID. the old surge suppressors are a legal demarc point. they are not used anymore now that it is legal for the customer to test his own wiring, but still not "quite" legal for the customer to mess with the telco wiring. on the old suppressors, you almost have to remove the telco wiring with a wrench in order to test your wiring, on a NID you simply unplug a phone cord, or in some cases open the cover and it auto disconnects. in either case, the OP needs to disconnect the wires that come from the pole or ped to his house. but make sure you do not disconnect the ones that supply your internet connection. with no telco provided dial tone, sometimes the normal phone pairs are used to provide service for the dry pair DSL if that is what you have.
