Technically It's Almost Ready To Use

....and by that, I mean a real bathtub in a master bath.

I still must paint the beadboard walls, and install the tile on the floors, which DH will do later this year.

I think the plumber will arrive on Monday (he is fishing tomorrow) to connect the clawfoot slipper tub to its topped out plumbing. And the electrician must come too, and put in the fixtures--sconces and a chandelier NEAR (not over) the tub. I must also construct my own version of two storage towers flanking the tub alcove.

Here is the romanticized photo of the tub sitting in its chosen location facing a really gorgeous antique stained glass window. Besides this window, there are clerestory windows high up on the adjacent wall of the bath, and running through the walkin closet in the other portion of this "bumpout" to our back bedroom, so now we have a real (though small it is adequate) master suite.

It looks beautiful and you will love soaking in that tub looking at the window.
I have an old clawfoot tub overlooking a stained glass window, and it's dreamy to soak in with candlelight going and a great glass of wine. Aaaahhhhhhh.

Thanks for your comment, Oldhousegal. What I envisioned is exactly what you say happens.

What I'm still trying to comprehend is HOW MUCH SPACE there is in this room. It started as 5 x 6, and I added a 5 x 6 bumpout or tub alcove. But removing the old exterior wall (which was thick and true dimensional lumber plus stucco, seems to give almost another foot to the depth of the room. Now, I am feeling the spaciousness of a really nice sized real honest to God master bathroom.

Plus the walk in closet which is 5 foot deep and 12 foot long. I am so happy to have it almost realized.

For clarity, (from my experience) softnecks don't truly scape, but sometimes they revert. Softneck garlic has been selected over the years (centuries?) to no longer produce scapes, mostly for the ease of harvest. Nature creeps back in via recessive genes and scapes do appear sometimes. Of my favorite softneck varieties (early red italian and Lorz italian), which I grow about 1000 plants of each year, i've rarely seen a scape over 18 years. This is probably because I continue to select my own seed every season and wouldn't plant one with a hardneck. To confuse matters more there are also the Asiatiac, Turban and Creole types which are referred to as "weakly bolting hardnecks", meaning they don't always make a scape though they are still classified as "Ophioscorodon" (hardneck) as compared to "Sativum" (softneck). I very much second Pickle's cart option. This makes a mini-island that doesn't trap you into difficult walk paths. The space I'm working with is close to the dimensions of yours and like you, heard from "everyone" that an island was needed, but after a number of drawings, I gave it up. I have created something else by turning the kitchen sideways, but have informed DH that there is the possibility that a cart still may show up. If my windows did not dictate so many other things, I would have made a cart garage under the countertop. I visited Ikea recently and was surprised to see all the cart options in the showroom. Large and small, wheeled or not, metal or wood. Lots of utility in them. Not advocating Ikea here, just the idea. My daughter has a little cart in her microkitchen in Fairbanks AK where it is invaluable. She can roll it out of the way when space is needed but otherwise, it's at her side when she needs an additional "plunk space" or cutting surface. Knives are in the drawer and most-used bowls, etc. are on it. A friend saw her cart and fell in love, went home to Minn. and created a one-wall kitchen with a modest cart as auxiliary space. It makes his wall a two-cook kitchen and is a transition between the table area and the wall kitchen. During the meal, things are plunked on it heading one way or the other; after the meal cleanup occurs via the cart surface. I don't think it moves around very much except when a specific cooking task requires it, but I know that wheels were important to him. When there is a big crowd or a project where it's in the way, many carts can go away, outside even. One of the mound of books I scoured for ideas during the planning stage featured the kitchen of a professional recipe writer. It had cupboards that were a little deeper on the two facing walls and there was a cart. I suspect that the cart was the stuff she needed on either of the two walls and that the top surface was that extra space needed in the heat of battle, in her case for dough often. Bebe, Glad you are safely home. I'll be looking forward to seeing your projects. It is to bad that you didn't get to paint with Delane Lange. I have several of her books and like her paintings. Sounds like you'll have a lot of things to paint on and it will be great to see what you come up with. So glad that most of your time was enjoyable. I'll bet it was fun to see and hear the excitement from a newbie at a place like that. I'm sure I would be overwhelmed at a conference like that and would never shut up. It's to bad that some people just have a hard time being pleasant. At our business we tell them they have to treat us with respect or we will not be helping them. It's amazing how they want to be your best friend right away. LOL I've never heard of Johnnie Lilidahl, so I'll try to check this person out. You were apparently impressed with the painting and I always love what you paint, so hopefully I'll find something on him/her. Post when you have time. Punk

And now, it is more than TECHNICALLY ready to use. My DH installed the towel tower yesterday. The only remaining piece will be the med cab/pharmaceutical cab to build into the shallow alcove above the toilet.

Gorgeous, relaxing space! I'll bet you're thrilled. We're almost done with our MB/bath renovation & addition w/ a nice master closet addition too. Sooo exciting to, as you said, to "have it almost realized." Enjoy!

Thanks for showing the finished product. You've done a lovely job with the period look. Love the little floor tiles, and I'm a sucker for beadboard! Enjoy a good long soak in the tub.
