Virus protection for Windows 98?

I have had it with the priceing of the virus protections out there, don't know that they do it any better than the freebies.

Would there be some knowledgeable person out there with some GOOD links to GOOD virus protection that is FREE?

I lost my link for Panda, Dreamweaver was very fond of that, and know there are others out there as well.

Would appreciate any insight in this situation.

Not too sure which work with Win98 anymore Shaddy but you can try AVG from here or Avast from here or Comodo from here or AntiVir from here All are great programs and all are free as long as you pay attention during the download and be sure to click for the free version.

In my opinion most anti virus programs are all as good as each other. Sometimes we need to change when there is a conflict with other programs. As I understand it all anti virus programmers share information to try to stay ahead of the bad guys - and they are collectively losing that battle according to some written reports.

Avast requires registration which lasts 14 months but is simple to complete. If you are on dialup I suggest you save the download to your hard drive in case you need to re-install at any time

Be sure to go after the updated definitions as soon as you have installed your chosen program because it will be quite old and out of date.

Shaddy, I don't know about any of the others, but I love my AVG. It's easy to use and seems to get the job done. As I mentioned on my own post, it has a subscription version that will also protect against adware, and if you've been using Ad-Aware, that's gone now for 98 users like us. I'm going with their trial version, which is free for 30 days--as soon as I get up my nerve. Seems like an awfully long download but I'm on dial-up so...

I have installed, used and recommended the following programs. Uninstall all other Anti-virus programs, spyware hunters etc. Download and install the following (all free, by the way) 1. AVG Free Antivirus 2. Lavasoft Adaware (Personal edition-free) 3. Spybot Search and Destroy 4. Spyware Blaster (that name only..no variations) 5. Crap Cleaner 6. A-squared 7. The current Mac operating system is Unix based, it is basically a very nice user interfaced Unix system. As such it is very difficult to write anything more than a simple virus that will infect only one level of a single program. The use of the super-administrator effectively stops the virus from doing a system wide attack. Most Mac viruses were written for prior operating systems NOT based on Unix. Even those were fairly rare and harmless, usually worms. To say there are many threats to the Mac is huge exaggeration, especially in comparison to what Windows sees in way of virus attacks. Apple does release security updates. They are primarily to close small theoretical holes in the system and make the OS as secure as possible. No actual virus has ever been reported penetrating those holes. One argument is that Mac's represent a low percentage of computer uses and hackers only go after the dominant Windows platform. However Hackers are out for glory and what could be more glorious than to write the first virus which brings down the Mac? A system that has been untouchable since the introduction of OS-X nearly five years ago. I believe that if they could - they would. This is not to say there won't be a successful attack on the Mac in the future, anything is possible although it is unlikely. I'm not going to lose sleep in the meantime.

I was using AVG until I went to get the newest free version and I couldn't download it because of some sort of bug in my Roxio programme and I can't update Roxio so I was left without protection for a few hours until I went to File Hippo and downloaded the free version of Avast. I really like Avast - the woman's voice that told me updates were complete scared the bejeezes out of me because I was in the basement when I heard her voice and didn't know where it was coming from. LOL I also run Malwarbytes. So far I have been lucky and have not picked up a virus. Anne

I recommend MSE by microsoft very easy to use and install or AVAST free. However you will need to fully remove McAfee prior to installing any other antivirus program on your pc this is essential.
