Virus protection for Windows 98?

I have had it with the priceing of the virus protections out there, don't know that they do it any better than the freebies.

Would there be some knowledgeable person out there with some GOOD links to GOOD virus protection that is FREE?

I lost my link for Panda, Dreamweaver was very fond of that, and know there are others out there as well.

Would appreciate any insight in this situation.

Not too sure which work with Win98 anymore Shaddy but you can try AVG from here or Avast from here or Comodo from here or AntiVir from here All are great programs and all are free as long as you pay attention during the download and be sure to click for the free version.

In my opinion most anti virus programs are all as good as each other. Sometimes we need to change when there is a conflict with other programs. As I understand it all anti virus programmers share information to try to stay ahead of the bad guys - and they are collectively losing that battle according to some written reports.

Avast requires registration which lasts 14 months but is simple to complete. If you are on dialup I suggest you save the download to your hard drive in case you need to re-install at any time

Be sure to go after the updated definitions as soon as you have installed your chosen program because it will be quite old and out of date.

Shaddy, I don't know about any of the others, but I love my AVG. It's easy to use and seems to get the job done. As I mentioned on my own post, it has a subscription version that will also protect against adware, and if you've been using Ad-Aware, that's gone now for 98 users like us. I'm going with their trial version, which is free for 30 days--as soon as I get up my nerve. Seems like an awfully long download but I'm on dial-up so...

Owbist did not say they were not good he was explaining they are not antivirus programs they are antispyware programs, what you said you need is an antivirus program. yes the free ones are as good as the pay ones. yes you definitely need to remove THE ANTIVIRUS program from your pc before installing a new ANTIVRIUS program you can not have more than one. If you had Norton you will need to go get the removal tool on the list I provided and follow their directions to get it off your pc, Norton is one that deeply inserts itself and can be hard to remove. You do NOT have to uninstall or get rid of superantispyware or spybot search and destroy those are NOT antivirus programs they are antispyware programs.

The plain one is free if you go for the pro version you get a trial period only if you don't want to pay stay away from the pro button. Here's a good article with information ation and instructions. But you can certainly get the programs from their own websites just be very watchful of each step so you can uncheck any of those unwanted items like toolbars. I was using AVG until I went to get the newest free version and I couldn't download it because of some sort of bug in my Roxio programme and I can't update Roxio so I was left without protection for a few hours until I went to File Hippo and downloaded the free version of Avast. I really like Avast - the woman's voice that told me updates were complete scared the bejeezes out of me because I was in the basement when I heard her voice and didn't know where it was coming from. LOL I also run Malwarbytes. So far I have been lucky and have not picked up a virus. Anne

I recommend MSE by microsoft very easy to use and install or AVAST free. However you will need to fully remove McAfee prior to installing any other antivirus program on your pc this is essential.
