Ideal children's bathroom tub- cast iron? acrylic?
Comments (15)Take a look at the American Standard Princeton tub made of Americast. It feels a lot like cast iron, but it is lighter than cast iron (but feels more sturdy to me than acrylic). They are nice and low so its easy to lean over the edge to bath kids. I even bought one for my master bathtub. I don't like deep tubs, I'd rather sit in a shallow, very hot bath and be able to lean over the edge and grab my phone or magazine :-) But you can fill them up pretty full also, if you prefer deeper water....See MoreKohler Cast Iron Tubs? Comments (13)My acrylic Bain Ultra air tub was set in a bed of mud with a piece of think plastic between the mud and tub. This was done for the ease of removing the tub if ever the need arises. It's as solid feeling on the bottom as my husband's Kohler cast iron tub. As for cleaning, that's a different story. You're not supposed to use anything abrasive on acrylic. Believe it or not, Scrubbing Bubbles is considered abrasive :( That's been my go to tub cleaner for years. To clean my acrylic tub RIGHT, I use Gel Gloss. It's a pain (literally!). You spray it on, let it sit, buff it and let it dry and then wipe the residue. When I'm in a pinch for time or physically limited, I will use Scrubbing Bubbles. There are very few non abrasive cleaners out there. One Bain Ultra suggested was Lemon scent Lysol. NOTHING works better than Scrubbing Bubbles!...See MoreExisting Cast Iron Tub vs Replace with Acrylic
Comments (3)Hi - does the original poster or anyone else have any feedback on how things came out? I'm in the same dilemma - except the original tub is definitely shallow and not great for a bath. But I'm seeing lot of criticisms about the leading tubs on the market, including cast iron, and it will be expensive to replace. I'm checking out other threads as well but any post-construction tips or thoughts would be much appreciated!...See MoreAcrylic, Reglaze Cast Iron or Fiberglass Tub for remodel
Comments (4)Just had a 66x32 cast iron bellwether installed. Price was high due to the size plus extra install costs. But worth it (to me). Love the feel of cast iron under foot and easy to clean. Plus I couldn't find a tub I liked the style of as much as the bellwether. (It was replacing a pink tub that I painted white many years ago, which I do not recommend because the paint does not hold up well.) If only I had had a 60" alcove, things would have been a lot cheaper, even for cast iron. Also, there was still a fairly long lead time for the bellwether, even though the fire at the kohler foundry was awhile back. We were warned and I was willing to wait....See Moregreen-zeus
