Existing Cast Iron Tub vs Replace with Acrylic

I have a dilemma. Just bought a house to renovate and sell. It has a cast iron tub in good shape. This is the only bathroom in the house. Do I scrap the cast iron tub and replace with an acrylic tub or do I leave it as is? This would serve as a tub and shower. Do families want these in their homes or would they rather have a lower tub that feels more like a shower?

Depends on the design and condition of the tub. They can be refinished and made to look like new if they are worth keeping. I would keep a deep tub but not one that is a standard buildier's grade model.

I just installed an acrylic tub and I'm thrilled with it - it's SO much nicer than the old porcelain monstrosity I had. The thing that everyone notices and comments on is the depth - it's much deeper than anything I could find in cast iron. I was willing to trade the duribility of cast for the depth. I think for resale, you'll probably find people on both sides of the fence, so get what pleases you and take good care of it - a tub in good shape will be a good thing, no matter what it's made of.

I had an acrylic pedestal tub in my last home, it was beautiful but it did not retain heat as long as I would like. Also it had to be reinstalled and I think they put some type of foam/cement in the base and then it did not budge at all. I also need to make a decision on a tub in the next two weeks and I will likely go with a pedestal acrastone tub ( American Bath Factory Nob Hill) . My first choice would be a victoria albert elwick if I had the space, I need 60" and I can not find a pedestal style I like in a 60" length with this company. Please post what you decide to go with.

We are on the verge of purchasing very well reviewed Sign of the Crab (Strom) plumbing products for a cast iron leg tub / shower converter fixture (riser, shower head, hand held shower head, leg tub diverter faucet...) for approximately $1,300 ..... BUT we just found something similar from Barclay, which is sold at Lowes and Home Depot, for about $400. The only reviews I have found of Barclay are about 7 positive to 5 negative, with the negatives all saying that a valve broke and there were no replacement parts available. Still, we could buy the whole set 3x over for the same price. But ... does the chrome peel etc? Anyone have experience with these Barclay plumbing fixtures? Thoughts?

Hi - does the original poster or anyone else have any feedback on how things came out? I'm in the same dilemma - except the original tub is definitely shallow and not great for a bath. But I'm seeing lot of criticisms about the leading tubs on the market, including cast iron, and it will be expensive to replace. I'm checking out other threads as well but any post-construction tips or thoughts would be much appreciated!
