Laptop screen problems

My mum just got her laptop fixed under extended warranty at a local PC repair shop. The initial problems was that the screen had a darkened column on the left, where the desktop icons are usually seen. The computer repair place said that it was a signal that the screen on her laptop was about to go.

When we got it back after the repair place had claimed to fix it... the picture quality was grainy (like looking through a flyscreen), and then it has started to look faded (like looking through fog). Does anybody have a clue what might be causing this?

It is a acer Aspire 3002LC laptop and about 2-3 years old.

Looks like the screen (recently replaced by repair shop) has a label reading Aspire 3000.

Protection: Avast (In process of replacing Avast with AVG, also adding Zone Alarm and Adaware SE Personal

Other downloaded programs (incase it helps) are Windows LIVE Messenger, Adobe Reader 7.0, Limewire and Java (TM) 2 Platform Standard Edition binary
