ok, last night i went into the virtual memory it has a thing for 1428 and i put 700 on both, it had 14 something on both. i don't know how to figure what the physical memeory is, it is a laptop, i got it last year in september whem they had those student packages. its a hp student. pavillion entertainment pc dv6000. now i had to take my vista hardrive out and put my hubs xp hardrive in. his is..well. i'm not really sure. i know its good. LOL his screen went out. so i was glad that his hard drive was interchangable!! LOL i keep it proped up so the fan will have better air flow. at least in my mind it does! LOL i've gone as far as to open the whole darned thing, and leave all the screws out so it'll get good airflow. i do not like hp. they give me a hard time. errrr..... please help me. ~Medo p.s. no dust inside. checked that tooo. :')

Thanks, pkponder! I called Toshiba as you advised and was told that the hardware was covered for 1 year. I have to find the receipt and then contact the warranty department on Monday to make arrangements to send it in to Toshiba. Thanks again.

Thank you so much for all of your inputs. I took out the battery as suggested, it did not work. Powered on with/without docking station, it did not work. Went to work called the IT support team. First tried the "tapping F8 key" just as Mikie suggested, got into Start Options menu, picked "Last use good configuration" or something like that. Once computer finished the steps, repowered it on, but the power up still could not pass the "starting window" screen. Then tried the "tapping F12 key". I had to start tapping the F12 key as soon as push the power on botton. Finally get into the start options menu, picked "diagnostic". It ran a lengthy testing for about 30 minutes. The results showed error code 2000-0142, msg 6142 status 79. Tech support person said the hard drive was bad. The rest of the testing on memory and CPU...etc. showed no problem. I am waiting for IT to install new hard drive and port old data. I only hope that the data I did not back up would be preserved.

This action could be an inadvertent combination of keystrokes which you didn't even detect. Usually the arrow keys in combination with the function, control or Alt key. I assisted one lady whose Acer laptop's display kept dimming. Turned out when reading or pondering her typing her hands would unknowingly move to the function key and arrow while at rest thus dimming the display ever so slightly. DA
