uninstalling AVG

I have downloaded (but not installed)the latest free home version of Avast on my W/98 PC. Changing only because AVG no longer supports W/98.

The Avast website recommends uninstalling other antivirus programs. Is it better to uninstall AVG from add/remove, or from the AVG "control panel" if that's the correct term?

It doesn't matter. Both methods will run the same un-installer program.

I use add remove programs usually but either should do it.

grandms that link there on the avast site links to the cnet download page if you put your cursor over the download button you can see at the bottom of the screen the cnet address. I bet what is happening when you click on the big download now arrow on that cnet download page, it sends you to another page where the actual download file pops up in a pop up box my guess is you have the pop up blocked and are not seeing it, you firefox or IE should show you a bar at the top saying you need to click there to allow the box. Since you are not seeing that pop up all you are seeing is the link for the pay version. Is your download blocked? if you have that blocked then you probably will not get the one from mikies link either. another site you can try from is major geeks just click on one of the download locations Avast! Ok I see you started 2 different posts here, one says you installed AVG free and one says you installed AVG antispyware free. Did you install AVG antivirus?? or just antispyware?? If you installed antivirus you most definitely can NOT have 2 antivirus programs running on your pc at the same time. You would first have to completely remove the antivirus program that is on the pc BEFORE you install and run another antivirus program. Do you have the AOL antivirus package perhaps? With antispyware programs normally you can have more than one they work differently so they can be used as layered protection thereby allowing more than one to run at the same time. Do you have plenty of memory (RAM) on your computer? when you get low on RAM it will tend to make things freeze up and run poorly. If you did install AVG antivirus and already had an antivirus program on your pc I would uninstall both of them completely, then go right to the AVG site and re- download and install the AVG antivirus to make sure you got it complete and properly installed. fill us in on exactly what you did and what you got so we know how to further direct you. And lets try to do this on this one post and not use the other one.

Thanks for the suggestions. I downloaded AVAST and the destop seems to be running well. I had so many updates which I couldn't update all month. I'm still doing that now. I'll leave AVAST in as it seems to have changed since I last used it. The scanning seems very slow. One other observation. I had Windows Defender installed (didn't realize it)which immediately started scanning after I removed AVG. I looked at the screen and saw that it was last updated 11/20/09. It was set to auto update before scanning but never updated nor scanned. I wonder if that was blocked by AVG? I still have AVG on my netbook and laptop without any problems. Very strange indeed. I'm still not totally convinced this was the cause of the page loading problem, but it has disappeared with the change in AV. Now off to update Windows and FF. Jane

you might try from MajorGeeks AVG AntiVirus Free Edition 9.0 Build 698a1730 where you see the blinking download arrow you have 4 choices to select I would go with one of the first 2.

Remember with Avast you are required to register and the registration is good for 14 months. As the 14 months approach you will be reminded to renew. Be sure to do so, I recently cleaned up a computer where the person did not bother to do the updating - and waited 3 months with no A/V before deciding to get someone (me) to clean the mess.

I uninstalled AVG 8 last evening went to "add/remove" and clicked there, then after a restart did a search for AVG there was still stuff to delete also did a search for Grisoft and found one file there to delete.

Yes Gillian that can happen quite often. I usually go to my Windows Explorer program and look in the 'Program files' folder after using the Add/Remove feature to see if the folder and all it's content has been removed.

The bits left behind are harmless, the program cannot run so you are quite safe from that aspect.

OK, I'm using W/98 and trying to uninstall AVG 7. -something.
Went to Add/Remove programs and clicked on remove. It tried, but failed and gave me the following:

error:action failed for file setup.exe: creating backup... action denied (their dots, I'm not leaving anything out)

Under details it says [5]% DESTINATIONS%=C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Free\setup.exec.install_backup",%SOURCE%="C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Free\setup.exec"

Now what do I do? I have more than enough memory for Avast to run even with AVG left in place but inactive--is there a way to disable AVG without removing it?

are you sure you had it totally turned off and disabled before you tried to uninstall it?

They highly advise against leaving more than one antivirus program on the pc. However I have heard of people who seemed to get away with it as long as one was not running. I personally would try to get rid of it.

you can try control alt delete look at the task manager and see if it shows any parts of AVG listed there as running processes, if so choose to end task on them then try your uninstall.

One way AVG recommends to uninstall is to start the installer and then it asks to uninstall. And some other options too.
