When to uninstall AVG

After reading more about the recommended anti virus program choices and seeing what you, the guru's are using, I want to change from AVG8 to Avast.

My question is.....should I uninstall AVG before of after I get Avast downloaded and make sure it is running correctly.

I will use the "gizmo" site that RC gave to another user that posted here. It has some pretty detailed instructions for downloading Avast.

I use FF and have Vista.

Download Avast to the desktop once you do that you will have the Set-up file for Avast on your desktop. Don't double click it just yet. You will want to uninstall AVG first using AVG remover. Please see the link for AVG remover. On that page download the 32bit exe, AVG Remover this file will uninstall (all) of AVG. Once that is completed you can now double click the Avast Icon that you downloaded before and that will guide with Avast install instructions.

with Avast you will have to register it using your email but only have to do that once a year and it is very easy to do. Here are the pdf files for install and user guide

I like to set my AVAST to scan when my screen saver is on you can do that by going to your sceensaver settings area and selecting AVAST screen saver.

You might need to delete the contents of the folder before deleting the folder itself, one of those strange quirks of computers. If that fails start the confuser in Safe mode by tapping the F8 button on startup and do your thing. If you are at all concerned about editing your registry once the folder has gone you could use Ccleaner, it is a safe and very effective tool for removing all manner of odd files and fragments left on the computer over time. I run it with the default settings.

Revo uninstaller is sort of a combined way to uninstall programs and clean up the registry for that programs left overs and some of the left over files/folders it might leave. It's not always 100% effective but its better than windows uninstall - which is really just running the programmers uninstaller. You can try to use revo... I always run it on its most aggressive scan. . To me it sounds like you might need to reinstall AVG 12 the older version..... disable it.... uninstall it maybe with Revo first... then follow up with the AVG uninstall tool .. most want you to run that tool from safe mode. fwiw IE9 is my browser of choice.. I need activeX for some network servers & IE9 surely loads in a blink. Firefox upgrade, about 6mb, v11 to 12 failed here ... failed but graciously offered a full download. Uninstalled the FireFox11 manually in control panel before installing new Firefox12. Seemed fine. It offers remove personal settings or not.. I always do remove personal ... because I seldom use it MS Security essentials upgraded the beta 4 version without a hitch here thru microsoft automatic updates. It was like a wake up call to uninstall reinstall IE9 along with flash & java's... when I suddenly had errors .. page not responding ... and this is a new laptop, maybe 10 days old. Came with one error in the admin error log... i fixed that easy, a win7sp1 known error. Something that upgraded very recent hurt IE9 somehow.

Woah now! I would not say that. Only one anti spyware is barely enough. Most people install 2 or 3 as these do not normally run unless to set them to run. Having more than one of these allows you to use either and if in doubt use both at any given time. There are many free ones to choose from, all with inherent strengths and weaknesses. There are also too many sound alikes which are bad news indeed so tread warily when deciding. Here are a few reputable ones I either do or have used on my computers Spywareblaster Spybot Search & Destroy Superantispyware AdAware 2007 I also had the free AVG anti spyware program installed and was quite happy with that. We'll see how good the reports are on version 8 of their Anti virus with anti spyware built in, hopefully it will be as good as both running separately.
