Loading page problems - resolved??

I didn't want to interfere with Deew's post but was having the same problem with my desktop. Today, at work my office machine started having the same problem. Very slow loading until finally would not load any pages after the home page. Both browsers. I was on this computer all day Friday with no problems at all.

The only download today was an update from AVG which I allowed. After that, the same problems started. I tried everything I did with my home computer and nothing worked. Neither browser would load a page. I decided to uninstall AVG and install AVAST (which I've had before and didn't like).

Pages load now on both browsers. Doesn't make sense that AVG was the cause because I only started having a problem today on the office machine. We'll see if that good luck lasts.

Gee, and I thought I was the only user who didn't like Avast.

Jane I don't know what to share with you as my Vista system is working just fine after the update. As I recall your systems are XP. Did you try disabling Link Scanner?

I did disable Link Scanner. I'm now home, on my desktop. Pages loading quickly. First time in a month that I'm on-line with this computer. I just uninstalled AVG. Maybe just a fluke?

Any suggestions for another AV? I really don't like AVAST but will use it. Didn't seem to score high on PCWorlds tests. They rated Norton tops, but I hate, hate Norton too!

Well, I'm not surprised that it's a bit slow on my home computer (older, hand me down computers, as it were). But today it was noticeably slow on my office computer which is fast & state of the art. I actually gave up trying to click into C&S something at the end of the business day, it never finished & I gave up. I don't recalll having had that happen before ... hum ... gremlins? I guess they're still working on the system, or maybe their servers. I DO see the caution/disclaimer about they're working on stuff IS back up again. Hrmphhhhhhhh (today's version of Grrrrrrrrrr)

do you happen to still have the paper work that came with it like the directions and the instructions manual that will have all your default info in it and how to reset it. If not look on the bottom for the model and google that you should be able to go to the manufacturer site and find the manuals. Did you set up your router originally with it connected to a desktop computer, in other words which pc did you install the software on? The router is setup on the family PC not my Laptop. Unplugging the router (and modem if one) itself from power and powering down all the computers, then power up the modem if you have cable first then after a while power up the router and once it is fully up then power up the various computers, often makes a big difference. I think we have a modem and a router for Xbox and laptops. are you just using the Vista built in firewall? Yes.I'm using the windows firewall. what are you using is it cable or dsl or what for internet? My son says it's cable/DSL internet. have you done all your windows updates? Yes.Except for three optional ones. I'm confused about resetting the router. That would be on the main computer. Will this help my laptop internet connection?

Can't load my own ISP's web page

I have one of my email accounts with my ISP. I currently can receive mail but not send it. I am sure the problem is with a setting. I need to get to the ISP website to look up the proper settings. My phone company is a co-op. I don't think they merge with anyone. They have been here to stay since 1953. Locally owned. I did manage to connect using a proxy service. It's been happening to me off and on the past few days. Also started seeing ads again out of the blue. Had to log in the other day and when I did the in-text links were back. Quickly scrambled to disable those irritating things!

Microsoft security essentials is good try it for a while.

I have a feeling the other issue I'm working is also AVG.

well it depends on the testing and how it was done on the forums when polls are done Avast always has a very high rating from users which is pretty important because we know they are not being paid by anyone to include or exclude certain results. has worked very well for me.
You might try the new Microsoft product, I have not tried it but many here have.

Thanks for the suggestions. I downloaded AVAST and the destop seems to be running well. I had so many updates which I couldn't update all month. I'm still doing that now. I'll leave AVAST in as it seems to have changed since I last used it. The scanning seems very slow.

One other observation. I had Windows Defender installed (didn't realize it)which immediately started scanning after I removed AVG. I looked at the screen and saw that it was last updated 11/20/09. It was set to auto update before scanning but never updated nor scanned. I wonder if that was blocked by AVG?

I still have AVG on my netbook and laptop without any problems. Very strange indeed. I'm still not totally convinced this was the cause of the page loading problem, but it has disappeared with the change in AV.

Now off to update Windows and FF.
