Lighting ideas for bathroom, please

We are just changing counters and new sink/faucet, in our smallish bathroom and have the 70's pendant type lamp lights hanging from a link chain with bulb in a clear pattern ball shaped thingy. Mount is in the ceiling above mirror/counter. Question is, what can I do that would still use the ceiling mount and offer enough light?

Any pics would be ever so helpful. Mirror is full length across back of counter with med cab on each end. Granite is Bianco Antica. Only 1 sink. Cab is walnut. Can you help me?

Can you build a small soffit between the top of the two medicine cabinets and put some recessed lighting in that? That would be your best option I think for that area.

A designer suggested to me that I consider hanging pendants over each of our sinks on our dble. bowel vanity. You may want to consider a similar idea. Im not sure what type of "style" your wanting for your bathroom but you could either hang two small chandeliers on each side of your sink or two pendant lights (there are some nice industrial looking ones out there).

We looked at making the center shelf fixed and the others adjustable but choose to fix all as shown. The cabinet is for two boys and the shelves are sized to fit anything they have. The client is a designer here in Vancouver and like me does not like the adjustable look. I find that people never adjust shelfs once originally set up and that when ordering custom built ins you get a much cleaner upscale look without the mass of extra holes. In a dining room or family room this adjustability comes with a certain "Ikea" look. Often you are undecided at time of production. If adjustability is required just allow for movement one or two inches over a set height and not fully adjustable along the whole span. Or offer adjustability in one bank of shelves not all. By removing these extra holes the whole unit just looks higher end. My thoughts.

I would put recessed in, once you remove the soffit for the florescent the ceiling will get a bit higher. That being said what other lighting is in this room? (no to pendant lights ps) Another option which may work is to go with a smaller mirror and add to sconces to the sides, or go with a full wall mirror and mount the sconces too it. Layers of light.

I find it confusing that you want to both make sure things go in your 1940s home, yet not look too dated. I would say that the large 3-section med cab is not dated enough. It is straight from the 1970s and 80s. You would better honor the era of the house if you go with two med cabs. Go with the larger ones if you can afford them and the alterations to the stud bays they will need. Is that vanity coming with that faucet? I would look for something with more curves, instead. The ones there are quite modern. Sconces on either side of a mirror provide the best light. You may be able to get three, with only one in the middle if the spacing on the wall works right, but you may need four. Or look for one with two lights in the center. Get out graph paper and draw your wall space, the cabinets you choose, and the placement of the sinks. You will have to work out the spacing to see if you can place sconces where they will fit on your wall, balance with each other, and not crowd the med cabs or any side walls.

Since you have existing wiring, consider changing the lights. We updated our Powder a couple years ago, replacing the original builders' over-the-mirror fixture with pendants. Ours are low-voltage, dimmable halogen. We've been very pleased.

Our lights are mounted in the middle of the ceiling over the vanity and then swagged to each side and then hang down with chains. We're going to put a recessed light in the middle where the current mount is and then run wires to each side and still use a pendant lights, only these would be more up to date.
