Anyone have a semi frameless shower door?

I was SOOOO convinced I was getting a frameless shower door, no one could have talked me out of it! I went to the showroom today and actually found a semi frameless door tht I liked very much! My tile on one side of my shower entry is a little bumpy so to smooth this out a thin metal track needs to be added to my frameless shower. The more I got looking at the frameless shower, I felt it was really contemporary looking. My shower is kind of in the back corner of my bathroom - not dead center - that is my tub area. Cost isn't a HUGE factor here but since I really like the look of the door I found and wasn't as crazy as the frameless as I thought I would be - I am leaning towards semi frameless. Anyone have a semi frameless that they love / hate, etc. Thanks for the help.

We have a semi-frameless door in our new construction condo (our second home) and we love it. While the builder did not offer us a choice, we are totally pleased with the appearance and the way it functions. Nevertheless, we chose frameless for the bath we recently added to our main home and decided that the appearance is worth the additional expense since this shower is the first thing you see on entering the room. Whatever you diecide will be fine - it's YOUR room:-)

I really wanted frameless when I redid our shower enclosure 2 years ago. Problem is, none of the walls were straight enough (imagine that in a track home?). So they suggested doing semiframeless. It ended up saving me quite a chunk of cash by doing it this way. I am very pleased with the look. Since it's the entire enclosure, it still has the glass to glass corners that I really wanted.

Oh, the glass people told me that frameless doors are NOT waterproof. I can't speak from experience but having the footer on the semiframeless does keep water inside where it should be.

I don't see anything in either code that prohibits it. P2705.1 of the IECC Residential code (2015) doesn't appear to mention it at all, and the UPC 412 (from 2018 at least) is about Urinals (whether or not a shower constitutes a urinal if you pee in the shower is out of scope of the UPC). :) UPC 408.9 mentions it this way: "Control valves and shower heads should be mounted on the sidewall of shower compartments or otherwise arranged so that the water does not discharge at the entrance of the compartment so that so that the bather can adjust the valves before stepping into the shower spray" So nothing to do specifically with the thing pointed at the door, moreso can you turn on the water without being sprayed by it, which is a good idea anyway since that first blast is likely to be quite cold.

Add this to my previous: If the glass will be pulled, then work out the scope of work and responsibility ahead of time. In writing. In a perfect world you'd have the glass company come out and remove the glass, then when the repairs are done, they come back out to reset the glass. That'll usually cost $$$. That money does not come out of your pocket. Your tiler can pay for them to do that. He may insist he can do it himself, with the caveat that he is accepting full responsibility for damage to any of the glass panels. And that's where the problems arise. Will he pony up $500 or $2500 for new glass if he shatters a panel? I'd let him have that responsibility only after he gives you a deposit of the $500 or $2500 that the replacement glass would cost. The glass breaks, you have cash on hand for new glass. If the repairs go fine with no damage, he gets the full amount back.

Why don't you shim behind the wall to make it square, then find the right size door that will fit. Don't make the door fit the wall, make the wall fit the door. I don't think a filler piece would look that attractive. In a pinch, if this is the way you want to go, you could make it yourself- simle DIY project. I'm sure HomeDepot has all the materials you would ever need.

Interestingly, I have 2 showes, and one have the header and the other doesn't. The one with the header does not have any brackets on the side or the bottom. The one without has brackets on the side and the bottom to hold the glass. I was actually given a choice on this by the glass shop. They convinced me that without the mounting brackets, it is better for the steam shower to reduce the leak. I don't know if this is true or not. But even with the header, it was not too abtrusive. On the steam shower, I actually like it without the mount brackets.

Thanks for the info. I am going to go semi frameless I do believe. Especially since I would need a thin metal strip on the frameless anyway to even the edges...Again it is the end of the bathroom not dead center so you really can't even tell and I figure if I have to wipe the shower door and tile DAILY anyway regardless of frameless vs. semi frameless - I could spend the 10 extra seconds to do the track. I budgeted for FRAMELESS but did not budget for the fact that the people who were going to refinish my existing vanity - well their truck blew up and are out of business so guess who needed to purchase a NEW vanity? So the extra savings could help towards that! :) Thanks for the advice! Melissa

can you tell me the brand of door you are looking at? i am deciding between frameless/framed and think i may be in the same boat as you. any pictures of the doors you chose?

I tried finding photos on the web but am unable to understand (visually) what the difference is between frameless and semi frameless. Can anyone explain and or post a picture of a semi frameless shower door? thanks
