I am in the exact same situation as you are.

My beautiful 6 yer old Golden was diagnosed with thyroid cancer 2 months ago. They could operate but the Vet said it is one of the hardest tumors to remove and at best it would only give him a few months.

Not worth it to me to put him through it.

So, we are playing the waiting game too and it is heartbreaking.

I understand the wondering about when is the right time. I am just counting on him to tell me.

If kindness to animals is indicative of the worth of man then I am in rich company.

I'm so sorry for you Sue and know what you are going through with Chammi.
We had our lovely Goldie from the dog shelter and she was such a delight for many years doing the rounds with me as my garden companion.
It was so painful to see her go.

I'm so sorry for the loss you are facing and am sending healing thoughts your way.

I faced a situation similar to yours with our little beagle. The day I lost her I was despondent and second-guessing myself when my next-door neighbor, a kind and caring ER doc, came over to see me. He said this was a way in which we can sometimes show more love and compassion to our animal companions than we do for our human counterparts. For some reason that honest statement helped put me more at peace with my decision. When I think back on my choice, I know it was in her best interest, not mine, and I'm thankful I was able to spare her undue suffering.

You're not in the wrong place since this affects your appetite. I am right there with you. I lost my absolutely adored and beloved furbaby after a decline, and then sudden three day battle with kidneys shutting down (Oct '08). I get where you're coming from even if it's not exactly the same. It couldn't be fast enough and it was too long. I just wanted one more moment, and each moment was more than he could handle. You'll know when the balance tips; I just know you will. I'm right there with you all in thought and more. I wish I could do/say more to help.

Sue, I know it is so hard to lose our best friends. I worry so much about my Lab Duke who is 12 1/2. He has been the dog of my dreams and I know I will be heartbroken when his time is up. All I can say is 14 1/2 for a golden or any large dog is exraordinary and means you have given Chammi a wonderful life. So many dogs are discarded or abandoned and to know you you have given Chammi a wonderful, loving life is something to truly be proud of. She will greet you on the other side when your time is at hand. I truly believe that. Thank-you for your great love for your doggie. I understand your heartache and wish you a fast recovery and to know that Chammi will be in a great place when she passes.

I am truly overwhelmed by the support of everyone here. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. And again, I'm sorry this post has ended up clogging up this side - if anyone knows how to get it moved to conversations, please feel free if someone hasn't already.

It's been a rough couple of days - I was so upset on Thursday I fell down some concrete stairs in the parking garage at school, duh. DH and I agonized today, thinking for sure it would be tomorrow. But Chammi clearly said no - she suddenly perked up, wagging her tail and following us around again. It may be that the effects of anesthesia took awhile to wear off or the higher dose of prednisone finally kicked in. Of course, we know it's not permanent. But, we're thankful for another day.

Fortunately, I'm on break from school this week, so either DH or I will be home with her. We'll just take it one day at a time.

I'm so sorry about your Chammi - it's so hard to lose a member of the family and that's exactly what our pets are to us.

My cousin just lost her dog a few weeks ago who was diagnosed with lung cancer. Sounds similar to your situation - he always ate like a horse and she was afraid she wouldn't know when it was time, but when it was, he did stop eating, so you'll know.

And she did have a vet who came to the house - I didn't realize there were any around who did that, but I guess there are quite a few, and that made it a lot easier. She didn't have to worry about getting him to the vet.

Nothing anyone can say will make it easier, but I always try to tell people that they can take some comfort in knowing that they gave their pet the very best life possible and did everything they could for them, so when the time comes, at least know you gave her the happiest most comfortable life she could have ever had. Sorry to hear about Chammi. You will know what's right what to do in this situation. That's the thing about our pets they do so much to please us. I put down a pet in October after a stomach tumor was found we were asked if we want to spend more time with her but she wasn't eating and not doing so well so we did it at that time. It's sad, but after a long, happy life you are pretty grateful of the wonderful pet you had. You sound very much like you are thinking of your pets best interest.

When I saw this thread coming back to the top, I knew what had happened.

I also believe our pets will be waiting for us. Our local pastor smiled and shook his head when he told me that "our father's house has many mansions". I told him that was HIS heaven, mine had tall trees and green fields and my dog was waiting for me. He paused and agreed that my version did sound like heaven, after all.

She'll be waiting, along with Stetson and Captain and the WonderWeiner, and so many others. Hugs to you.
